Any Olive 4HD Users Here?

Does anybody here use an Olive 4HD Music Server as player or Transport?

It has bagged a few good reviews;

Its good as a transport but its analogue outputs don't sound much better than a £300 CD player imho/e. Using the analogue outs, the sound is average on Red Book data and while better on 24 bit HD data its not as good as it should be.

However feed it into a good external DAC and it becomes very good imho both on Red book and 24 bit HD

Thank you for a clear and informative review, refreshing to see!

Currently, a modified Transporter used as a transport is the best player I have heard for the price, so it would be interesting to see what modifications are possible to the Olive 4HD.

I would have thought quite a lot as it has been built to a price and it seems to me that the components used in the analogue output are what is letting it down in this respect.

The DAC in the HD model is quite a good one so it should be better.

Imho this is certainly a good foundation for you to weave your magic on.

I would love to do a review of whatever you come up with.

You definitely must review *something* that Mark's modified, because the quality of his digital upgrades are, IMO, second to none, and I'm sure you'd be gob-smacked. He really knows his shit.

It might tempt more people to go down the route of modifying an already excellent CDP or DAC, instead of throwing thousands at some overpriced piece of 'badge-fi' that's, as they say, 'all fur coat and nae knickers'....

It's his fault I haven't felt the need to get into computer audio, for sonic reasons (anything else doesn't really interest me, and I enjoy having a physical music collection), as he's made my Sony X-777ES/DAS-R1 sound so bloody amazing - and I'm reliably informed by him that there's still plenty more to come! :eek:

Sadly Mark I have not had that pleasure.

I would love to do a review of a modified product. If we could stick to HiFi that would be great as AIHFA does not cover AV.
