What Are We Calling Vintage These Days?

Youth in the off-licence asked me if I had got my 'vintage' North Face fleece off of Etsy.

:'I bought it new' I replied, then doing a quick mental calculation added, 'Err...23 years ago.'

But anyway made me think about the meaning of 'vintage'. Okay so I now know where it's at with North Face, but what about for hi-fi?

Years ago I would have said anything pre-1970 but is that now 1980? Or even 1990? What say you?

I would say anything before my 21st birthday (1980).

I bought my Rogers LS3/5a speakers in 1979. Still have the speakers and the receipt (Sound Sense in Edgware Road, London). £150 back in the day.

Some might say if it is no longer made it is vintage, whether it has improved with time like a wine is another matter.:D

Definitely anything previous to 1989 but personally I would say anything before 1980.

I like 1980 as a date but that does mean there is no such thing as a vintage CD player and that doesn't seem right.

For vehicles, the DVLA recognises anything over 40 years old as an 'Historic Vehicle', making it exempt from road tax and the MOT requirement.

So pre-1983 would be an appropriate time for deeming Hi-Fi gear as vintage methinks.

vehicles have been going longer than hi fi so 1990 is fine i think.. think it was 30 years initially so i guess it should move up every 5 years by 5... although marco isnt around to get his view currently.

in cars classic for insurance is 20 to 40 years old. hmrc classes it at 15 years, although its value has to be greater than its original price and over £15k too...

I would say Vintage is anything from before 1970 ish, and up to there is Classic.

No but I know what you mean, that's still not right.

Vintage can be good or bad. An Amstrad 2000 is vintage but it's also tat.

A Classic has to have obtained some sort of lasting status to the extent that people still talk about it now. But I'd say it doesn't need to be old enough to be vintage.

It might even still be in production - like the LS3/5A. But you wouldn't say some LS3/5A you bought new last year were vintage but you might call them a classic speaker.

I think that's a sensible answer.

All vintage means is that it is 'old' that is not new - the favourite word now is 'pre-loved' - think of vintage wine (French vendage - 'wine harvest' where the word vintage came from) so in simple terms it is the year of a particular harvest.

Everything has its own timescale.

Vintage clothing can be from the 60s or 70s. Vintage cheddar can be from last year (15 month or more). I am not sure that I would like a cheddar from the 70s?

There is 'vintage', 'classic', and 'antique'. Then there is 'retro', which just means anything new which has a styling inspired by the past.

"Pre-loved" and "pre-owned" are (I think) American neologisms for 'used' or 'second-hand'.

I think there is only a single component in my system (or collection) that is new, and that is a pickup arm
