View Full Version : Removing a test tubes rounded base..

Having never tried this before i thought i'd ask if anyone else has ever knocked the bottom off of a test tube & how you did it?
Right now i'm thinking of using a glass cutter to mark around the base on the flat portion obviously & then dropping something with a bit of weight down the tube & hope it all doesn't end in tears :eyebrows:
I'm open to possible suggestions though so fire away if you have what might be a bright idea :)
I think if you score round with a glass cutter, heat the test tube up in a flame (but not to red heat) then rapidly cool the tube in water, the end will neatly separate at the score line.
Dropping a weight into the bottom will most likely have it break through the end.
Are you thinking of making your own valves?

If you can score it neatly that's the tricky bit with a thing the diameter of a test tube. After that watch this....

Now that i like the sound of Barry :) Thanks a ton for that one, i'll give that a go. I do have a few tubes so messing up a couple is no big deal in reality :eyebrows:
Making my own valves? I'm not sure i understand what you mean by valves & in what context, but the answer is no.
I'm building a corona discharge ozone generator, test tubes appear to be ideal to seperate the two stainless steel mesh electrodes as long as i can knock the bottom off ;)

I'm in no rush anyway as i'm waiting for the mesh to get here ;) Everything else is in hand including a 5000V 0 5000V transformer that i'll adjust the output of via a variac :mental:

Be aware that high levels of ozone can be very hazardous.
If you are using it for odour control try a much smaller version than you think you may need and work your way up until it is just enough.

There is water leaking into my garage due to the roof being stuffed (1) & some apparently leaking in above the damp proof course next to my neighbours path. When it rains hard the gap between his path & my garage fills with water which drains off of his path :oops:
Right now there are quite a few rather sodden boxes & a load of wood that has kind of expanded down one edge etc :eek:
It's not the most pleasant smell in there so i'd like to do something about it. Knowing that this is what is used to sanitize flooded houses i figured i'd build my own rather than pay out 2 - 300 folds :eyebrows:

Hi John, yes i'm quite aware of this. Hense my use of a variac so i can adjust it & run it at a low setting ;)

By valves, I meant vacuum thermionic devices that get 'vacuum heads all aglow', you know E88CCs, EF86s etc.

I might be slightly mad but making my own valves i think would be beyond the scope of me :lolsign: A mess yes, a valve no :eyebrows:

The video which is embedded in the linked site shows how to use Barry's and Techno Commander's tools of heat and cold temperature extremes - applied in this case with a lighter and a piece of ice.
