Dumfries

Anyone been to Moffat or Dumfries? Just wondering what this part of Scotland is like. It looks pretty rural on the map?

Dumfries was a lovely little town with oodles of character when I was at school there, back when dinosaurs ruled the earth. I'm afraid that it's a run-down dump now. Every second shop a charity shop. I was really shocked when I visited it last year. :(

Having said that, I'd certainly recommend the Dumfries and Galloway area. The Solway Coast has a lot to offer, and tends to be ignored by tourists who speed up the M74 to points north.

Thanks Hugh, I am sure there is plenty of spectacular countryside and coast in that area which is worth a visit and I was hoping it would be ignored by the tourists all speeding up to the Western isles!;)

not a lot or major roads but some great countryside and coastline in the area. just dont expect to go that fast, which is good for sightseeing etc:eyebrows:

One of our sons is spending a week there and likes wildlife and the countryside/coast so the less crowded and slow the better!:thumbsup:

And about twenty miles or so north of Dumfries, you'll see signs for Leadhills. Definitely worth a visit.

Moffatt is quite rural, and maybe not so much worth seeing iirc. In the early 80s we stayed overnight there, in a B&B - £15 a night with breakfast! All I remember about our stay there was watching Hitch hikers Guide to the Galaxy on the pub telly.

Actually no, there are a couple of other things I remember, from breakfast the next morning. One of guests spoke up to ask if anyone minded her turning the telly off, and some bloke on another table said "Yeah I mind", then muttered under his breath loud enough for everyone to hear, "Snotty cow".

There was an expensive-looking jar of honey on our table, which I got well stuck into for my toast, even recommended it to the German couple sat with us. When they got up to leave, the German lady pointed to the honey and asked if I was finished with it, then put it in her handbag. Even with the language barrier, they were clearly amused by my embarrassment. And not once was the war mentioned :)

Who doesn't want the telly on while they eat? There's some odd people in this world.

:stalks: Who retains information like that? I bet the inside or your head is like an overfilled closet where you have to be careful opening the door, so everything doesn't come tumbling out.
