View Full Version : Proms 2023 Sound Quality.
I would appreciate your thoughts on the sound quality of this years Prom concerts please. I listened online last night, I thought it seemed a bit mediocre!
Mike.
I listened to most of last night's Prom, but was not sat down to give it my full attention.
I wouldn't describe the quality of the broadcast as 'mediocre', I thought it was up to their usual excellent standard; but as I said I doing other things in the room at the time.
There has been rumblings over the last few years concerning the sound quality of BBC transmissions, but they usually do a good job during the Prom season.

Why is this discussed every year!!! I honestly think if individuals actually went to the proms they’d still complain of the sound quality. This is not meant as a personal attack Mike just a general observation. The same topic is debated in the high mags as well, again every year.
I've just noticed you listened 'online', which might account for your dissatisfaction. I rarely listen to anything online, and if I do it is usually speech and not music.
I listened 'off air', using a Quad FM4 tuner fed by an external quasi-omnidirectional dipole aerial, and thence to Quad ESLs.
I think the main determinators of sound quality will be how they miced it all up, followed by the mixing.

Sounded fine to me (online).
Enjoy the music. That's what it's all about in the long run.

Could make it a bit squeaky?

Thanks Barry.
Tonight I’ll give it a go on my Marantz ST7001 FM tuner, linked to a 3 element array beamed on the Sutton Coldfield transmitter. I’ll report back.
