Vinyl- moving house

We are moving house shortly, and have ordered a couple different sizes of boxes , not of which are suitable, one too big the other too small.

Has anyone moved recently and has a recommendation for suitable boxes, I have around 1000 albums to box up.

Really Useful Box Company 35l XL. Each one takes 100 albums. Not cheap but can be used afterwards. I had over 1000 lps in storage for two decades using these exact boxes. With a bag of silica gel in each box they were in pristine condition after storage.

See if you can get hold some plastic milk crates and remove the partitions. You ought to be able to put 60 - 70 LPs in each, depending on vinyl weight and thickness of the cover and outer protective sleeve.

That's what I would do. Hire a small van for anything that matters to you and can be damaged. Or in your car if there's room.

The moving firm will transporting most things except the hifi , which I will box up , too be honest apart from anything else far too old to be lucking over a 1000 albums around.

I did think about doing that , but that would require making several journeys, boxes is the easiest solution if I can source the correct size.

Take your point about lugging vinyl about Robin, I only had half as many to move from one room to another, and that was enough.

I have already moved them from one room to another, and that was enough.

I have several records mastered or remastered by Bernie or Kevin.

Just finding it very strange how difficult it is to find the right size of box.

Another idea - go along to your local vintner and see if they will let you have some empty wine (or whisky) boxes.

You ought to be able to get 50 or more LPs in each. Then, as Steve suggests, hire a small van and drive them to your new home yourself.

The larger size is 64x34x40, which I think should be fine, the tjene looks tight at 32cm

With my economist hat on, again, you need to work out how much you are prepared to spend to protect your investment. The boxes I mentioned work out at less than £13 each or 13p per album. Does that sound excessive?

I should add that the 35l xl boxes are a perfect size and do not allow the albums to slide around as the IKEA boxes would.

I dare say that you could resell the 35l XL boxes for at least £8 each meaning that the move would have cost 5p per album. Personally, I have kept all my Really Useful Boxes and over time added more. They are virtually indestructible and the ones I bought in the mid 90s are still in pristine condition.

These are very good and surprisingly robust, I secured mine to the wall at the top to ensure no accidental tipping up, also if you select appropriate ikea storage boxes they will for, especially good for that unnecessary cable collection or vinyl cleaning products, or pornographic HiFi mags.:eyebrows:

The majority of the albums were in kallax cubes , and will returning to them once we move. Unfortunately the albums will be remaining in the boxes for a few weeks until the new listening room is sorted out. At the moment we are probably looking having a “garden room” for the hifi and music, once I find the right type at the right price.

They are still an option which i am considering and as you say could be reused or sold.

Thanks for all the suggestions, the ikea suggestion would great apart from, to fill it would be around 150 albums, which is quite a weight. The plastic boxes would work apart from the expected delivery date, we need the boxes in the next day or so. I have found boxes on Amazon which will around 100 albums which i think should be manageable.

IKEA sell those boxes that go inside the Kallax units that everyone uses for LP storage. I wouldn't completely fill them but for house to car then into house again they'd be fine.

Another vote for Really Useful. I used the 19XLs since I didn't want to be carrying full 35XLs up stairs.

Worth bearing in mind that the size of LP sleeves has increased since the mid '90s. The tallest of my original '70s sleeves would be something like Yes's Going For The One and it's dwarfed by Jack Johnson's In Between Dreams, so when you choose a box watch out that the lid doesn't crush the tops of the sleeves. That's why RU introduced the XLs, which have taller lids than the non XLs, they'll just brush the top of an outer poly sleeve if you use those on your LPs but not the actual card of the sleeves themselves.

That's a shame, sounds like it would have been ideal. But if you ever decide you do want to move house I'd be happy to spend a couple of days helping - I may not be much cop with techy stuff but I'm pretty good at lifting and shifting heavy things from here to there.

Regarding moving, like you, I/we have too much 'stuff': around 1500 LPs; 2000 CDs; about 400 DVDs, and something like 1000 books. And as for equipment, again like you, I have amassed a fair amount; not enough to open up a shop, but enough to dismay my partner.

Regarding moving, like you, I/we have too much 'stuff': around 1500 LPs; 2000 CDs; about 400 DVDs, and something like 1000 books. And as for equipment, again like you, I have amassed a fair amount; not enough to open up a shop, but enough to dismay my partner.

Maybe you should consider moving 'oop north' - we're a friendly bunch, and your money would buy you a lot more. If for instance you moved to Padiham/Burnley, you wouldn't even have to be bothered by neighbours, just buy the whole town. It would even come with its own (municipal) swimming pool.

I'll have to pack 200 LPs (+ the CD and DVD collections) when I move, hopefully before Christmas. I'll build my own cardboard boxes, I'm good at packing stuff. The Hi-Fi is a bit more tricky, but will be sorted. Anything to get away from this place!!

That's just the crap photo, floor plan says it's 27' by 15' (although it narrows a bit at the back where the kitchen cuts in). Get some big speakers in there no probs.

You are indeed lucky, owning your house outright. Wish we owned our house, it's rented. I do have another house in Preston, bought and paid for, but my ex-missus lives there. I would never try to sell it from under her, and eventually the kids will get it.

It's a dump mate, and it's slowly falling apart. More tiles came off the kitchen wall last night. Suicide, probably. I need to spend about 30K on it just to get it up to code, which is more than it cost to begin with.

Kitchens are a nightmare. I know, we had ours done earlier this year. You need a kitchen fitter, plumber, electrician, tiler, plasterer. My advice would be to call in at Howdens, (every town has at least one, and fitters tend to know and like Howdens stuff), get them to come out and measure up, and ask for a fitter they can recommend (they'll have plenty of regular customers). And go from there.

Kitchen people will want a skip for dumping their crap, so order a good size one (8 yarder) while you're at it, so there'll be room for any other stuff that wants to go to the tip.

i fitted polystyrene stuff in the livingroom about 16 years ago when i decorated the room. whole room took 3 months, bit at a time. still havent painted the room to this day lol. hip started to go and i just gave up. there wasnt a straight wall in room or a 90o corner... the old chip paper wouldnt come off etc...a nightmare

You are indeed lucky, owning your house outright. Wish we owned our house, it's rented. I do have another house in Preston, bought and paid for, but my ex-missus lives there. I would never try to sell it from under her, and eventually the kids will get it.

Yes Barry, although nowhere near the size of Grant’s collection, we will be moving the various drinks ourselves, several bottles of gin as well and wine of course.
