Lovely set up you have there Michael.
How do you decide which speakers to use, or amplifier come to think of it?
Is the metalwork of your Quad speakers earthed? The cable feeding the mains plug looks to be 2-core cable.
Regards
Hi Michael,
The red one is "Balder" 2,5 year and the purple "Emser" 3 year
Good names! And they're still pretty young, so liable to be members of the family for quite some time.
Cats also make your hi-fi system sound better. I bet you didn't know that! ;)
Incidentally, I notice you're using Supra Sword speaker cable... I rate Supra cables very highly - they tend not to get much exposure in the same way as, say, Chord or Atlas, but for me they're a bit of a hi-end bargain.
What do you make of them compared to what you used before? If you use digital interconnects, I'd highly recommend their Trico coaxial cable. It's ridiculously cheap considering the sonic performance on offer!
Marco.

Hi John,
Thank`s.
I perfer .........both actually. It depends of type of music you playing. The sound is similar but the Bastanis has are more dynamic. The mid are exellent on both.

Good question! For the moment Iīm listen to the quads and Radford. The quads can only be driven by Radford. The SE amps (9W) goes to the Bastanis.
About the cable.Yes itīs correct itīs 2-core cable and and not earthed.
The plug which goes with Quads are not with earthed pins.
Whatīs your recommendations? Do you have experence from ESL 57?
Michael

I have used different cables but mostly Supra because you get much for the money. The Sword`s are great.

Hello Michael,
I'm surprised, the Bulgin mains connector is a three pin design to allow the metal grill (both front and rear) to be earthed. This is true on my ESL 57s and on every one I've come across. Are you sure yours are 2-pin only?
The combination of Radford power amplifier with Quad '57s is a marriage made in heaven. Not the only one with the Quads, but one which I would love to hear one day.

Hi Barry,
Hm........You are absolutely right.
I better change the cables.
I have tryed different amps with the quad but the Radford is made for it.
Was lucky to find the amp in a hifi store in Stockholm and they still have another one on the shelf ( Radford STA 25 ver.4) If I hade the money....
What amp are you using for your quads?
HI Michael, how much is the Radford selling for in the Stockholm shop,

What amp are you using for your quads?
I have tried various amps with my 57s:
Sugden A21 and A51
Quad II (valve)
Quad 50E
Quad 303
Quad 405 (heavily modified). This is the amp I use at the moment, with the 303 and 50Es kept in reserve.
One of the best amps I ever heard was a home-built version of the Otala and Loerstrom design, which was commercially realised as the Electrocompaniet 'Two Channel Audio Amplifier'. 25W with the first 11 or so watts being Class A. Unfortuately it required a preamplifier having a very low source impedance (< 10 Ohms) and was not known for its reliability. Even so, I still harbour thoughts of building one, as I have the circuit diagram (published in JAES) and most of my preamps have a sufficiently low source impedance.
Another amplifier that was supposed to work beautifully with the '57s was the original Mark Levinson 25w Class A monoblock amp, the ML-2. Again they ran hot and reliability was not their strongest suit, but if I saw a pair for a reasonable price I might be tempted.

I had an original A21 and I thought it a very good match to the '57's.

Hi Ali,
I think we have discussed this before. I found that the A21 'ran out of steam' easily when driving the '57s. Strange, as I had no problems with the 15w Quad IIs, and the A21 was 12.5w; hardly any difference at all (-0.8dB).

HI Michael, how much is the Radford selling for in the Stockholm shop,
Hi Jon,
I just checked the web page and it seems to been sold .
I think the price was SEK 14000(~ Ģ1200)

Ah yes,I remember.Never found a lack with mine.Guess I should dig it out and fix it one of these days. One of the channels makes a horrendous noise on switch on till it warms up.I think one of the smoothing caps may be on it's way out.

Thanks Michael, about the same price as hear then, i might be going to Sweden to visit our friends next month so i could of made a trip to Stockholm if the price was right ;)
You might find it charmless in this application, but as long as the 57's have the protection circuits fitted, the 606/707/properly-capped 909 amps sound stupendous to my ears, the extra "oomph" clearly audible over the 405-2 at low levels and using a 66 as a preamp - personal experience...
From my experience Quads sound better with a bit of welly behind them, my old Bill Beard P100 drove 63s'very well

Well the Sugden sounded very good, but the WAD 300b PSE monoblocks I used to have sounded even better!

I really like the Rogers with the Radford amp, itīs a great match.
I even use the Radford to the Bastanis and I have to say after a long break in period(months!) of the drivers I`m very satisfied with the new crystal driversī.Itīs more detail and more natural sound than the original drivers.
Robert is a guy who knows what he is doing.
Thatīs all for now.
Cheers!
