Hi Steven, that's a pretty big room! If you can, try to get over to NEBO this Saturday (which is an even larger room), and you'll get to hear how various speakers work in that space.
Also be handy to know your budget.

How about these fellas? Should be good in a large room. Need a biggish car tho. And they're in That London.

I could potentially sell my SD Acoustics SD1 3 way speakers. They are the original massive standmount version rather than the later floorstanders. 40x40 base narrowing to 40x30 top as they have a sloping baffle, 70cm tall. They could be collected from near Durham. I love them but they dominate my small listening room.

does it have to be stand mounts? It really limits the options.
I wouldn't worry too much about reflections - in a large room you will get fewer early reflections and they are the ones that are the problem
Mission LX6-ii get great reviews and come in around £500.

Looking at positioning speakers approx 2ft away from wall may consider floorstanders but not some big ugly mothers had a pair like that beautiful sound but my god no waf factor

put a couple of panels up on the walls first reflection points it will do the job.
Aesthetics are a bit difficult since one man's meat etc...Those Missions James linked to look good, can't find any measured performance but Mission is all Peter Comeau designs now so should be competent - if you like the styling. And there's no worries over your amp being able to handle them.

I have the Concept 20s and they are very good. These are a real bargain though.

That is a large room and feel that you are limiting yourself by going for stand mount speakers. Including floor standers and panels opens up a huge range that could work for you. My favourites are Apogee and magnepan, which would work beautifully in that size room and a Krell powering them.

I'm sure that would work well, but he only has a budget of 500 quid. That won't buy much Magnepan, or Krell for that mattter.
How about something like these? Comfortably inside your budget, and well-reviewed.

670m round trip?

Yes I did notice it was a bit distant. Though the seller did say buyer could arrange their own courier. Anyway, that's just one example - there are several for sale at various locations.
Edit: there are only two listings for the "Freedom" speakers, both of which are located in That London. The Freedom moniker is an important distinction I believe.

he's already got the Krell.

I always wanted a go on those, think I did get a listen to one of their floorstanders years ago, but I'm not sure now.
They didn't go for unrealistic money.

They didn't go for unrealistic money. No but I was banking on them not being well known and bagging a total bargain. Have no need at all for any more speakers otherwise.

too many positive comments out there probably. Only bargains these days are speakers that that get slagged off a lot but are actually really good.

Well thanks for all the suggestions lads but I've pulled the trigger on a pair of tannoy xt8f gloss white so bit of waf keep the missus happy never heard a pair so gambling but always fancied trying a pair of dual concentric speakers
They should be a lot of fun.

The only risks are overpowering bass and what What Hifi said "Tonally, these Tannoys aren’t the sweetest sounding performers around. You’ll have to take care not to partner them with anything that sounds overly forward or harsh, because they’ll do little to tone these qualities down."
Hopefully you'll be ok on both fronts and you'll like them.
Your not taking into account that the people who write for WTF know nothing about hifi :D
Just like NME in the 1980s - if they hated it rush out and buy it, if they liked it then it would be shite of the highest order.
actually just read it and they did seem to like them on balance.
