See https://www.gov.uk/alerts

I had a message from giffgaff giving lots of details, and scenarios I hadn't thought of before.

My phone won't be giving me an alert because I have turned the Emergency Alerts off.

Easy enough to find in Settings.

was reading about this on tinternet. Someone asked what happens if their phone is switched off, answer was it will automatically switch on for the alert.

What people can believe is just amazing.

but if there's a real emergency (Tidal wave, comet impact, zombie plague) you might not find out about it until it's too late. Look at all that bother Brad Pitt had in 'World War Z.' That was because he'd switched off emergency alerts on his phone. Probably.

I wouldn't want to be in a phone shop or repair centre at 1500 today!

I get flood alerts on my landline as I live in a 'Flood Zone'. Except I don't.

First time it happened I did go down to the river to take a look. Absolutely no problem whatsoever, it would need to have risen about another sixty feet before it became an issue.

I wouldn't want to be in Wales - it looks like they'll get it in English AND Welsh. If I was chatting on my phone and it suddenly burst into Full Harry Secombe mode, I really would think the end of the world is nigh.

We're about the same altitude as you... I suppose we're more likely to be hit by a low-flying plane, otherwise should be ok.

I'm sure it's all deadly serious, but the alert doesn't need to be all doom and gloom. They could be region-specific. Up here the alert could be "Trouble at t'mill", southerners could have "Gordon Bennett!" or something. Don't know about the rest of the country. Apart from Burnley, where it could be "Oh no what now".

I keep my mobile turned off unless I make one of my four a year calls :).

Anyway, if there's a real major emergency like 10 minutes to being hit by a nuclear attack, we won't be told because it will create a panic!

although in that situation it wouldn't matter if there was a panic. How much panicking can you do in ten minutes and after that it's all over anyway.

Mine went off one minute before time. Some female explaing what it was and all I had to do was to click on 'OK', and that was that. My little Nokia phone didn't respond, but then it's 1.5G.

All quite painless and not the end of the world.

Clearly everyone is too scared to mention the real and very obvious reason for this practice emergency alert - nuclear attack from the Russian bear, who the UK govt. is doing their damnedest to piss off. I think it's first duty should to protect UK citizens, not some fucking ex Soviet shit hole.

no reason to warn anyone of incoming, even if we had time. there is nowhere to shelter anyway. this country decided not to bother with shelters for the commoners.. just for the elite

IIRC the money shot was that traffic warden armed with the SLR. The rest of it was nothing like as interesting.

It's not exactly Hollywood material is it? That's why there's so few films about nuclear apocalypse, but the TV movie Threads is the best. Another British film well worth watching is the psuedo-docu 'The War game', in fact that's probably better, artistically speaking.

My bad, may be earthquakes? The British Isles is has one every few million years.

I was in a cinema yesterday - and I confidently expected at least one phone to go off during the showing. Absolutely Zilch! As far as I can see there's nothing on my phone [which was switched off] to show that I missed an alert call.

there wouldn't be if it was off.. cant be communicated with if off or in airplane modeYes - maybe - but there were enough other people there to make it likely that there would be some noise. There is usually at least one which rings in most performances, though there was always a very slight chance that everyone would have turned theirs off.
