I'm sure that I can't be the only person that this has happened to so thought I'd share the solution with some chums. The teccy IT help sites have lots of queries about it from frustrated users but numerous different answers, only one of which eventually worked for me :)
Some time ago the screen of our desktop PC began to "jump" (I mean the image not the whole monitor !) Not much, just a quick jump up and down a couple of centimetres or so. Inconsistently too, because it also worked fine for long periods. Over time it began to jump up and down more, again inconsistently.
In recent weeks it became demented :steam: Navigating web sites requiring any degree of sensitivity over selecting fields or functions became impossible. By now I was getting randomly paged back involuntarily. Reading was immensely frustrating, loads of emails were aborted and attempts to use sites to buy items became risky. It was effectively scrolling itself as if operated by an invisible toddler. The teccy web sites (which were torture to access and read under such conditions) offered various solutions ; complex adjustments to Windows settings, downloading new drivers, several antivirus search / removal recommendations, moving speakers away from the monitor and suggestions about the monitor itself :scratch:
Just to be clear, it wasn't the screen, it was the Window self-scrolling. Eventually after a complete reload of Windows didn't improve things my wife began talking about getting a new PC altogether.
I happened to try a new mouse - it has worked perfectly since.
