Not the first choice for Rock or Pop, but the flute is very underrated in my opinion.

Here are 5 to get you started: (I'm steering clear of Prog, that's Andre's prerogative!)

I'll make it into an AoS Spotify playlist if we get enough interest (and I can find them!)

Men at Work - Down Under
The Mamas & The Papas - California Dreamin'
Van Morrison - Moondance
The Beautiful South - You Keep it All In
Boz Scaggs - Lowdown

Was just about to say, almost anything from Jethro Tull would likely feature a flute somewhere.

to be honest I'm struggling, apart from the obvious such as Tull & Traffic most things I have with flute, are where the flute is texture rather than a major Instrument

Here's Another:-Tonton Macoute : Just Like Stone. nice proggy flute work out in this...

How could you forget this one:

Lieutenant Pigeon: Mouldy Old Dough

Are you sure that isn't a piccolo? Just guessing, but sounds a bit too high pitched to me for a flute. Good choice though! :)

Could be a piccolo... but is a piccolo a member of the flute family?

Alex_UK

Sure is!

This is a great flute work out. No river dance shite here , just good modern celtic music.
Surprised no one mentioned the first King Crimson album.

Check out the flute (Graeme Blevins) on this track - Live in the Mix - Flow Dynamics (http://open.spotify.com/track/3EomLjGMqDiN7SkQRpFb4S) (The whole album (http://open.spotify.com/album/3i9lNdywsCZ9UsbgXurAX5) is worth a spin if you like 70s funk. Done by Australians. 40 years too late!)

(Also available on We7 (http://www.we7.com/#/album/Flow-Dynamics/Flow-Dynamics) if you are not a Spotify user.)

Well, I'm pretty sure that you guys never heard of this band before, but give it a shot:

JrM_NKHkWhA

The song is great, and with 2 flute solos...

You're right, Edward - never heard of them, but a jolly tune and the flute is great!

Glad you like it! I've listen to that album a lot back in '82. when it was released.

Maybe you'll like this one too:

6r_PTXduLwM

That's an oldie, issued back in '78. You can hear a lot of Jethro Tull in that song...

How could I forget this... Rosebud's French-disco cover version of Pink Floyd's 'Interstellar Overdrive' from 1978... the main riff is performed on a flute and it's a bloody fantastic version. No YouTube goodness, but it's available on Amazon for very little money, and I guarantee that if you want an authentic collection of early Pink Floyd covers this is your thing. Probably one of the first Floyd 'tribute' albums.

Here's Have A Cigar as a bit of an intro. No flute on this one unfortunately.

Well it has been a fair old while since we added any flute tracks, but I was listening to Selling England By The Pound (Chris The Grand Wazoo Suggested Firth of Fifth in this thread) and then found myself for some reason listening to this:

ExWtwDYwOQU

You have to wait until about 5.15 for the flute solo, though! (And there's also a double-whammy of xylophone in there too (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=14345)!)
