Never been to Torquay. Looks ok, but I'm a bit disappointed with the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Just looks like a fountain to me. And where's the herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?
Looks like somewhere from the Eastern bloc.

What watch(es) are you wearing for the occasion Roy? ;)

Was going to post some more pics but if they generate asinine comments like this I won’t bother.
Why do you think that is a stupid comment?
We all have are opinions, which we are entitled to.
still a lot of Victoriana on show though. was a rich town, and may still be
Very much a case of faded glory. Lots of Victorian delights and a few very posh bits but also interspersed with some of the most deprived areas of the country. Well worth a visit, and of course it’s Devon, so it’s wonderful.
If you’re in the area pay a visit to Coleton Fishacre, a few miles outside. One of my favourite places anywhere.

Had a break there many years ago, seemed nice enough to me. I have holidayed all over the west country and have family there, I like it a lot.

Sorry if my comments gave offence Roy, they were just referencing an episode of Fawlty Towers, just a bit of fun. The beach looks a bit bleak though, and is only saved by the inclusion of your extreme handsomeness :) :) :)

British seaside resorts have been in decline for decades now, probably started by the package holidays to places with (almost) guaranteed sunshine. Still some nice places though, and Devon/Cornwall is probably my favourite UK destination (after Scottish Highlands and Lake District of course) :)
Visited Looe in Cornwall last summer, we liked it there. Unlike St. Austell, which we thought was awful, and their road system meant trying to escape there was like something out of The Truman Show.
We visited Paignton and Dartmouth last year, two places on the Devon coast I hadn't visited before. Torquay and Paignton together are part of Torbay, also known as the 'English Riviera'. I found the area charming - and in no way comparable to "Eastern Bloc" towns; of which I've visited a few.
As long as you enjoyed your visit Roy, that is all that matters. :)

ha; ive never been to any, although i was in berlin just before it fully became a united germany. was also in hamburg which isnt far away and the hamburgers were less than keen to have the east berlinners join their 'hard working' country as they put it.:D loved hamburg by way. fabulous people.
Well to be exact, the only coastal towns in any Eastern Bloc country I have visited were all in Albania: Sarandë ; Vlorë , and Durrës. All had clean beaches, but the hotels were drab monoliths without any character - not only that the food and wine were terrible. But that was back in 1992.
There nowt wrong with Torquay and indeed I have been there myself and down the coast to Dartmouth where I stayed many times. Beautiful part of the world.
My observation that it looked a bit like somewhere in the Eastern Bloc was in no way a slur on Torquay but just one or two of the photos reminded me of some towns and cities by the sea in Eastern Europe. I have travelled extensively through that part of the world and I would say in some cases Eastern Bloc cities and towns put some of ours to shame. Look at Prague, Tallinn and Wroclaw and many many more around the northern edge of East Europe. Beautiful places.
There was no intention to disparage Torquay and I am sorry if the OP perceived it in that way.

Why would I go abroad when I have this on my doorstep

Just don’t mention the war.
I grew up spending the summer holidays in the area, staying at the grand parents in Brixham. It is an area I am familiar with, but I don’t miss.
I did spend many a happy summer there.
Having spent a lot of time there, I have seen the transition from an area for family summer holidays to Christmas for the old folks.
I will return one day, so my daughter can visit and see where her grandfather grew up. It will be fun visiting for a weekend, if the weather is nice.

Yep been there and it was very quiet but that was back in 1982! Not sure if it is quite the retirement destination it once was and therefore I feel it maybe a little more lively since I went!

We spent a couple of nights there last summer at Langtry Manor hotel. We had the Prince's bedroom, complete with the original four poster bed, which was nice. I bet HRH didn't have a flat screen telly built into the wall over the jacuzzi bath though :) I thought the town itself was ok too, but i didn't bother with the pier's zip wire though, too wet and windy.

Worked in Poole for about 10 years, big building right in the centre and bought my first house in Poole, a long time ago now.
I remember a place called Sandbanks down that way and the house prices were astronomical then so god knows what they are now?

They go for silly money, many millions. I heard that Sandbanks properties are the dearest in Britain, outside of London. Ex-football manager harry Rednapp lived there, did a TV series called "My Sandbanks Summer". They also make luxury yachts down there (Sunseeker) which sell for lottery-win kind of money.
This one seems quite cheap, but then it is four years old:

Torquay's beach looks better in that last pic. We didn't get to south Devon last summer, went straight from Bournemouth and Poole up to Newquay then Bude. Going to a concert at Cardiff Castle in June, then might do a bit of Somerset. Or maybe not, the sea is very brown there, and anyway I've never seen any of south Wales. Tenby is supposed to be nice to visit.

Brixham will always be remembered for holidays when very young, there is always an attraction with a coastal town, particularly as we live in the midlands.
However I don't think I could live in a popular coastal town and cope with the large holiday influx.
As long as you enjoyed your visit Roy, that is all that matters. :)
Thanks Barry.

Took four analogue automatics and two g shocks.
Just the six watches for four days [emoji849]
The last photo was taken on Middle Street? Is the RNLI shop still there?
I will point out that you were lucky the tide was in, as it smells less.
Did you get up to Berry head? Nice views from there on a Sunny day.

Yes, we went into the RNLI shop, bought a windchime, charming little place.
Never went to Berry head, was a bit murky in any case and trying to rain.

Agreed. I went there years ago (at least 40) and was disappointed to see all the picturesque roads despoiled by ugly, but necessary, double yellow lines.
im not the tourist type i have to say and don't like going places just to see them. dunno why either, but i really hate that for myself. i did go as wife loved it etc so just grinned and bore it.:D
oddly ive not really changed and now im a fully fledged single, i still don't like it much but at least ive not got someone pushing me; or should that be, alas ive no-one pushing me. my daughter is the complete opposite and just loves new places.
but i will say i like seeing and hearing about others' doing said trips so enjoy the pics and chat.

It's always chaos there during summer, I avoid the place (and any other spots the packs of holidaymakers head for) when I'm down that way. Plenty of nice other places in Cornwall that don't get too overwhelmed.

We like to visit here. Porthtowan, north Cornwall. About 7 miles from Redruth. All you have there is a pub, a couple of eating places, a couple of shops, and a great beach quite popular with surfers and some really nice coastal walks.
https://coastradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/17427_Porthtowan-0895.jpg
I spent a lot of time on the North coast of Cornwall, starting in my teenage years, surfing at the beaches between Constantine Bay and Sennen Beach.
It is a lovely area, especially out of season.
IMO All seaside destinations are best visited 'out of season'.

apparently they got the idea when the monty python cast stayed there and he was the rudest hotel owner ever !! quite a character it seems

fawlty towers was, in its day one of the great series of my time; any time, that stopped rightly after 12 episodes aprox?? and it had been done, up to that point, without much loss in quality.(its always sad to see series going long past their best).
i for one wont be watching the 'redux' if thats the right name for it. best remembering it for its own original glory.
its rare that a 'classic' is bettered

I agree, it's a standalone classic. Any attempt to 'bring it back' will be about as funny as having to explain a joke. I'm surprised the Americans haven't had a go before now.
There can't be many more anagrams of 'Fawlty Towers' left to put on the signpost at the introduction. My favourite was 'Flowery Twats'. :D
