Last night was wild - wet and windy, but things have settled down now - fairly quiet,, no rain, bit cold probably 5-6 deg C, and maybe more rain to come.

The hills have regained some white snow cover.

So far not too bad, though feels colder than the 10 deg C which it's supposed to be. We are also "promised" heavy rain starting almost immediately.
Up to now that hasn't materialised and it's bearable outside - though things can change fast. From the news from the west coast this seems likely to deteriorate quite soon. Currently it's fairly dry.

Blue skies and frosty here. I've been going out with my woolly hat this last couple of weeks, more to hide my embarrassing 'hairy doughnut' hairstyle than anything else, but now Mrs. P has just done my hair (a zero with the clippers), and I can feel the chill. No, really I can. So I'll be sticking with the woolly hat.

Same here. I grow my hair remnants to a max of 4mm before shaving it all off. Woolly hat or baseball cap mandatory!

just been round to the supermarket and there's a nip in the air that wasn't there yesterday. But I suppose it is only early Feb so can't hope for too much.

As long as the ice and snow stay away it's all good. Long range forecast suggests that it will.

Looking forward to it still being daylight when I come out of work, only a couple of weeks away now.

Only went to drag racing once (at Long Marston)... went for the bikes, but it was the guest appearance of a couple of cars that really did it - the spectacle, the noise, the smell, just epic! Almost every year I tell myself I'll get to one, and every autumn I realise I've forgotten again  Maybe this year...

Tragic! The CBX 1000 with its 2 foot wide motor was something else, bound to become a classic. I did get to ride my mates in the early 80s, loved it. Candy apple red. I'd have one in a shot, but have you seen what they go for these days?

The later pro-link ones just weren't the same.

Oh yes, the weather - frosty start, but turned out nice in the sun. Starting to feel some heat coming off it.

Tragic! The CBX 1000 with its 2 foot wide motor was something else, bound to become a classic.

At the time it was a statement product. Nice enough, but I'd sooner have an SV-1000 myself. Less complex, faster and better handling for much less outlay. Great sound too, I love 90 degree V twins.

Pigmy Pony
06-02-2023, 23:38
Yep, SV1000s are decent bikes, pretty torquey and make a great sound with the right pipes. One of my riding buddies had one, probably still does, haven't seen him for a few years.

But they do have issues...

Suzuki thought they were onto a sure-fire winner with it, after the huge success of the SV650, but they were wrong. Didn't appeal to SV650 owners, who found the idea of TL1000S "widow maker" follow-on a bit intimidating. And existing TL owners weren't interested in moving to a lower powered "TL", with its budget frame and conventional forks. A good motor, but built on a budget. Finish was not great, and they got ropey looking quite quickly. Pampered examples might be ok, and can be had pretty cheap.

Anita's bike is built around the 650cc 90 degree v-twin SV, and it goes like the clappers. Plenty fast enough for her. It's in a Hyosung Aquila, which is a cruiser bike, perfect for short-arses like her.

My mate had the TL-1000R. It was quite brisk!

At the time I was zipping around on a rather strange Yam SZR-660 (TZR-250 with XTZ-660 engine squeezed in). Nothing below 4000rpm and nothing above 7000rpm, punchy enough 'in the zone' though and handled really well. Pretty rare bike.

Had to look that one up. Built in Italy by their Yamaha importer Belgarda, and they only produced 2000. So yeah, won't be many about. Decent performance without costing an arm and a leg by the looks of it.

Romanians. They're a rum bunch. Just read the BBC news report, it says the police thanked people living near the cordon for their patience. So who called at your house to thank you? Was it the SIO or just a hobby bobby? Or did they just shout a "Cheers mate" as you walked back home with your beer and crisps?

Nobody called but did get leaflet through the door appealing for witnesses or CCTV footage.

Not that I was inconvenienced and I was at work at the time anyway and don't have CCTV so I suppose nothing to thank me for.

Usually its the Albanians whacking each other out, the Poles and Romanians are pretty quiet.

Pigmy Pony
12-02-2023, 11:54
yeah I think you're right, though the Romanians do tend to get implicated in cable and scrap metal thefts quite a lot, and also doctoring cash machines. Maybe I just watch too many of those Channel 5 "Coppers vs Scrotes" TV shows. Ime Polish are almost always really hard workers. Come across them quite a lot.

As for Albanians, well... I once fitted a door and some windows for some Albanians, four or five adult blokes and one woman. I commented that he'd picked the most expensive Rock Door you can get, and he replied "I want something the police can't break down". "No, I'm joking", he added, but I'm not so sure. And the cars parked outside were worth more than their house.

There used to be a 'Coppers vs Scrotes' series that was filmed in Stoke but it was all just coppers wrestling people with mental health issues to the ground or trying to calm down drunken, hysterical women late at night. There was never any real crime on it.

I suppose rambling is a healthy enough activity, but most of them resembled forgotten Peperamis that had been through the wash. I can understand the appeal of fell walking to a degree, or a walk that has a pub at the end of it, but trudging across fields and along dirt tracks just because they're there, no thanks.

I may revisit the idea in ten years if there's nothing on the telly.

Strange really, temperatures this winter haven't been that low, but somehow it's felt cold. Just grey miserable non-weather with a chill wind and little sun. Every year I hate winter more and more.

So far seems similar to yesterday, though the night might have been colder. Seems likely that there'll bs frost at nights over the next couple of days.
Quiet and dull so far, with just a hint of drizzle.

Sunny, but cold especially when the wind picked up.

Went out today and wore two scarves, gloves and a woolly hat (it's very rare for me to wear any kind of hat)

I don't know what it is with me these days, but I've really been feeling the cold this winter, even though the temperatures haven't been unusually low. I cut short my first car boot of the year this morning because I couldn't be doing with the chill breeze.

old age i guess... it starts getting to your bones and especially joints/sore bits. plus youve probably not had house as hot as usual so have not built up your feel good inner heat(as i call it)

Yes I think it's all of those things... though the aches this week may have come from shifting a couple of tons of roof tiles from a truck at front of house to scaffold round the back then up onto the roof. Young man's game I reckon.

Also I've developed a bit of a retirement mindset - doing less jobs, and the jobs I do feel more like work. So I probably feel the cold more than when I moved round more. Oh well, you don't get owt for nowt.

yes to both.. retirement thoughts do kick in and scunner in bad weather. and yup, roofing is a young man's job. my son in law was a roofer but even he started feeling it so he is now a lecturer and head of dept at college on roofing. better money too lol

Get a young lad on the firm, he does the work while you supervise from inside your Canada Goose with a flask of hot tea. And possibly a cigar.

I do have a lad, I'm giving him the up-ladders work and outdoor stuff, while I do the indoors work. Last week was a one-off, where he couldn't be in two places at once, the lazy sod.

Seemed a bit warmer today (8C), but that might have been the woolly hat.
