Thanks Bob, I always wanted to see my 2M cartridge taken apart and look at the components in detail which was illustrated very well I thought.

I never really thought about some of the details before. How does one go about putting a new stylus in a MC cartridge? Are the cartridges disposable, or do is a retipping or cantilever replacement service available? I never quite got round to buying a MC, and by the time I could afford to I just about lost interest.

Re the records behind the presenter, I have one as a CD I think - the Dave Brubeck one.

Few MC cartridges have replaceable styli, most have to either be returned to the maker for refurb or sent to a specialist for re-tipping etc.

That doesn't tend to put users off, certainly not me.

I like that video, thanks for posting. I knew the principles but not the detail and have never seen inside cartridges. I had no idea the magnet (in the MM) and the coils (in the MC) were that small...

Must have a view of some of the other vids they've made.

Depends on what is to be done, but £200 is likely to be the baseline. I think Esco quote as low as that. Goldring, who repair many other makes start at around £300. Northwest Analogue are probably dearer. There are many other companies doing this work. If you want a couple of grand's worth of Koetsu repaired for instance, it starts making sense.

Just to muddy the waters a bit, both ADC and Decca cartridges have non-moving fixed magnets and coils. Basically, they rely on 'waggling' a bit of iron in the magnetic field to influence the coil/coils.

(and don't even mention strain gauge/piezo cartridges and other exotics)
