For sale, an original Sonic iImpact Tripath amp in excellent condition.
This is the amplifier that started up the whole digital trend. When I bought it I did not realise just how good it was. I bought it in the Los Angeles Virgin Megastore on Sunset Boulevard on a short vacation from Bangladesh where I was working at the time. I was prompted to buy it because I was so bored with listening to American FM radio which seemed to play the same boring tracks over and over again. The amplifier came as part of a mobile music system that included a pair of folding cardboard speakers . Known as the Soundpax, the speakers were energised by an exciter driver affixed to the inside of each unit. When assembled the speakers formed quite a rigid pyramid structure. Obviously they were not capable of a very deep bass but they were capable of sufficient loudness for a hotel bedroom or similar small space. Most importantly within their limited band range the speakers were very uncoloured and capable of resolving fine detail.
It was only much later that I learnt of their cult status, though by that time I was fully aware of just how good they were. Unfortunately the speakers suffered a terrible fate. Whilst I was at work the air conditioning unit in my apartment suffered a malfunction and I returned home to find my speakers in a pool of water reduced to a cardboard mush
One big advantage of the amplifier is that it can run.on 8 AA rechargeable batteries or a 12 V rechargeable battery. I was able to use it during the many power cuts I experienced whilst working overseas paired with an iPod and a pair of high efficiency floor standing speakers.
Pictured with the original speaker kit. Shame to have it lying in a draw doing nothing. I'm asking £20 plus £2.99 for delivery. I can throw in a 12-volt UK power supply for an additional £5.
