View Full Version : Node paired with vintage amp
Happy new year gents .
I wish to use my Node streaming thing with my Yamaha CA-2010 which of course doesn’t have remote controls so I intend to use the volume control from the node to increase or decrease the volume ( without keep getting up to do it manually)
My question is : should I have the volume higher on the amp and so lower on the node or the other way around?
Cheers
Andy

Depends if it's digital or analogue volume. If digital I'd get the volume as high as possible on the DAC but if it's analogue it probably depends on the relative quality of the pre amp stages.

Hi Andy,
Your CA-2010 has a power amp input marked MAIN IN.
If you go directly into there from the Node out this will give you the best quality. Note that you wil have to switch the COUPLER switch to the off position for this to work.
Lining up 2 stages of preamplification usually doesn't do signal integrity much good.
You'll need to be careful to set the Node output level very low to begin with just to be on the safe side, and experiment with levels from there.
Hope that helps.

Cheers mate, as it happens I’m continuing to use the K3 as the Yamaha simply can’t compete with it , that may change after a recap .

Will be interesting to see if it is- old kit can still be the business as you well know!
What is it that the Roksan does better than the Yamaha?

The k3 drives the B&O’s with ease whereas the yammie struggles at similar volume levels , I can’t find any efficiency ratings for the speakers so I’m guessing that they’re not that efficient. The bass is no where near as deep and the soundstage is lacking too .

It could also be a function of current supply and power reservoir (transformer and power supply capacitance). Recapping might improve that.

The will be low 80s sensitivity but the Yammie has a hundred watts so I wouldn't have thought clipping would be an issue but I don't know how loud you like it.

The Yammie actually has 120w and the K3 has 140w , I very rarely listen to loud levels . These speakers have phenomenal gorgeous bass but it’s just not there with the Yammie . Same era gear so I would expect more but perhaps I’m wrong, hopefully after a full recap it’ll be back up to spec if it already isn’t.

Not going to be any difference between 120 and 140 watts in terms of loudness. Could be that the B&O are a tough load. That would surprise me though.
Do you have any other amplifiers you can try just out of interest? Otherwise we await the recap :)

Well I’m definitely going to recap so I’ll know after that mate , got another amp coming soon ( another 70’s one )

A grand for that ! The world has gone mad .
I’ve got a 70’s classic coming, once I can collect it.

Not sure I'd go for B&O again myself (had a few), I've always fancied another classic Harman Kardon or Luxman receiver :).
(probably silly money now, but I still might be tempted by another HK 730 or similar)

There's money in them there vintage hills. And you'll always get some who try it on price wise. I've fancied getting one of these, I do like Trio gear, but probably won't happen as I really don't have a practical use for it.

What is it you're getting, or will we have to wait and see?
I’m not tempted by the b&O amps ( I might be wrong like I was about their speakers)

A Sony TA-5650 ( serviced of course) and the suicide component replaced

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkI've found similar with Yamaha studio amps which have a very high damping factor. I've always put to down to really gripping the speakers when I've been used to a fuller looser bass.

That’s the thing! This Yamaha only has a damping factor of 45 , I then started doing a lot of research about damping factor as I always believed that the more an amp has then the more Oomph it has but that also degrades the sq apparently.

Damping factor is just one element in a very complex interaction between amp and speaker. Very low (i.e under 10) is not good for accurate bass but some like a bit of 'bloom'.
I've owned a shedload of 1970s Jap amps and only a few have not sounded lacklustre into difficult loads. Not sure that is what is happening here though. Could be the Yamaha just doesn't work with the B&O for obscure reason(s), but not fair to conclude that until its been overhauled.

My mate bought a TA-2650, further down the range from what you're getting, he paid 40-odd quid for it and a Trio t/t at a local auction. And never got any of it checked/serviced, the cheapskate. Specs show it to be 43wpc, and a damping factor of 25. It runs the B&W DM603s I gave him nicely. That is hifi on the cheap! I could tell him to get it looked at, but I know he won't.
Based on that, I would expect your sorted higher-spec 5650 to be brilliant :) The wooden side cheeks (if yours has them) is a nice touch too.

Hegel make a song and dance about their amps' high damping factor (>1500 iirc). So what's the deal with damping factor? I'm imagining it might trade warmth for a more 'hifi' sound.

No, it's just marketing.

I’m currently using it with good results with little b&O c75’s ( they’re pretty good for their diminutive size) https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230107/27c74470d7dbb9f64e392831e6db7671.jpg

If it sounds good through them then it's fine, I think it just doesn't like the big ones.
I got a Rotel, a big one, sounded like crap, no bass, no top, compressed and mushy. Took it to a mates and put it on his speakers, sounded like the voice of God. You can't underestimate the importance of the speaker load. I think it's the main reason for disagreement about what's a good-sounding amplifier and what isn't.

If it were just that, I can understand some manufacturers boasting about it (bigger numbers must be better, right?) But surely they must have some effect on the final sound. Might there not be some speakers that are happier with this?

I'm not qualified to explain it properly. - have a read of this thread (or just post #7 if you can't be arsed to go through it all) - it will answer some of your questions and maybe pose new ones.
