The thing with attractions, they're always more attractive if the visitor has travelled some way. Folk coming from other countries who visit Blackpool(!) would feel the need to go up the tower, but I never have and I only live 20 miles or so from it.

Got a painter in this week, and he's got this little fan heater going, as it helps speed up drying (his excuse). It also makes it nice and warm for him as we're too tight to put the heating on (the real reason). Only £25 at Toolstation, half the size of a toaster, and really chucks heat out. Might just get one of these.

I can't say for certain as Mrs. P deals with all this stuff, but I believe that this govt payment (60-odd quid a month goes into bank account for DD payers, while folk on pre-payment (like me) get it paid onto leccy meter. The upshot is we have plenty of credit there, but gas is costing fortunes. Not ideal.

Last October we put £400 on leccy meter, and £500 on gas (paid for by sale of my amplifier :steam:) We have since added loads more to the gas meter, while we still have nearly £400 worth of electric.

I might be underestimating. Trying to work out what they are actually ripping you off for is unsurprisingly quite difficult.

Trying to work out what they are actually ripping you off for is unsurprisingly quite difficult.Oops - I think I made a mistake - mistaking the unit price for the total price. 70p for 2kW for an hour would be 35p/kWh - which is cheap, Peak rate electricity is quite often around 45p/kWh plus the standing charge. The standing charge is relatively small, though for people who don't use a lot of electricity it can still mount up so non trivial for them. We get off peak electricity for 4 hours/night for around 7p per unit (kWh) with Octopus. Note also that the peak rate unit cost this year is getting on for double what it was last year with most suppliers.

Update on previous. Now snowing again this afternoon - quite heavily - not sleet. So if the temperatures stay low will add to the piles we already have.

Now looks as though any possible respite might not come till the weekend - or later! Cars will be blocked in by snow piles and generally frozen so difficult to get into or start.

Sunny here today - but still a lot of white snow - and temperatures still low - below zero. Decided not to go out today - as with the low temperatures last night chances are that the pavements will be almost impossible to walk on. Gave up on putting the bins out last night.
Last time I went out on a day which was not totally different from today to have a coffee with someone - that didn't work out - as he gave up as soon as he opened his front door. I didn't and could barely walk across the road from the car park to the cafe (about 3 mins walk in the dry) and it took me 10 mins or more each way - though I didn't actually fall over, but it was a close thing.

However it really should warm up enough over night to shift most of the snow by Saturday afternoon, so we can go out.

Been on an hour and just got the temp up to 14C.

22C needed before I feel comfortably warm but the advantage of the fan heater is it blows the warm air right at you instead of being 'ambient' so it doesn't matter so much what the overall room temperature is as long as you sit in its direct line of fire, as it were.

Immediately round here I think almost all of the snow, slush and ice has gone. The grass is now green again, though on the more distant hills there is a mixture of white and darker colour as the trees and rocks appear.
The last week confirmed my belief that temperatures between -5 and 1C are not good. If it's going to get cold then -5C and lower is better, as then snow and ice are less of an ongoing problem.

Also I think that temperatures which waver slightly above and below 0C are really bad for roads, and lead to lots of potholes. They happen with lower temperatures too, but the fluctuations tend to lead to more and deeper potholes.

There was one of Jeremy Vine's nonsense debates on the radio the other day. As usual intended to wind folk up. The subject was 'Should the government give more money to folk who live in the colder parts of the country?' One outraged bloke phoned phoned in to say those who live in parts of Britain that gets the colder weather just have to suck it up, after all they chose to live there. Calling from a part of the country where salaries are higher to reflect the higher cost of housing. What's the difference?

The difference is that any heating allowance will ultimately go to the energy companies. Poor folk not dying of hypothermia is just a welcome bonus. Whereas higher pay to cover housing costs will ultimately stay with the residents, who may eventually benefit when retiring to a cheaper part of the country.

Depends what values you put on different societal groups. Are you suggesting home owners, or renters, for example? Landlords, for example, might put up their rents if they feel that the tenants have received a windfall. That's not the only scenario or course.

yes, no free houses anymore. Tiny two bed new build is £200K - It's Victorian equivalent like mine are £100K. That's in the ghetto, if you want to live up the hill where there are trees and stuff, add fifty percent to those prices.

Still cheap compared to almost anywhere else though I suppose.

A friend of mine, her sister did buy an ex council 1950s 3 bed semi, big corner plot, decent area, for £100K but that was 'pre-pandemic' and it needed a lot of cosmetic work. I think they are still getting the woodchip off 3 years on.

a done up 2 bed end terrace like mine will be about 125k i'd think. maybe slightly more now. ex scottish homes stock. quiet spot tho. dont get many sold as its a nice enough area for money. a few are private rented out now.

Not likely to go back on the market in my lifetime. That's increasing prices since less of them to come back on the market. There's certainly no gentrification going on round my way, not unless you count transient foreign labourers and students as gentry.

The BBC forecast for this week has been highs of 7C, lows of 4C, and dry. So it rained most of yesterday. Then last night about 8pm the gritting truck went past our house. I thought "Clearly they haven't seen the forecast, no frost all week". Woke up this morning to frost and ice. BBC Weather service wants sacking.

Now it is a sunny 4C.

Yesterday wasn't terrible either - though a slightly wet at the end. I took the opportunity to charge up the battery of our petrol vehicle, which suffered somewhat during the very cold snap.
