I agree mate , there’s been occasions when I’ve not entertained even listening to b&O gear, thankfully this time they’re now putting the atc’s to shame ( really)

I read somewhere that the mid is Atc, it looks identical to the ones in my atc’s.

Just looked up the Isophon dome unit, looks like you could be right. The only photos I can find show three screw heads around the dome, not the four in your photo. Can't lay my hands on my circa 1980 Isophon driver catalogue at the moment, they did a few versions :).

Glad it's all worked out for the best. Well done! :)

B&O make some great gear - both in sound and looks. Often dismissed by the ignorant as "Habitat Hi-Fi", those that take the trouble to listen to their products know they sound good as well. I have several of their cartridges as well as a tuner.

So guys I’m now thinking of tinkering with the internals of these over the Christmas break .
They were refurbished by B&O back in 2010 .
I’m thinking of fitting banana post bindings and maybe upgrading the internal wiring for some decent speaker cable.
Maybe bypass the protection circuit ( not sure how that’s done )
What do you think?
Any recommendations?

no leave them original. That stuff makes no difference anyway or B&O would have done it from the start.

opinion is only divided because no-one ever does a proper comparison. Re-wire one speaker hook it up to one channel and the unmodded one to the other. Switch to mono and then compare. probably most can't do it as they don't have an amp with a mono and a balance so just rely on memory and the assumption that it must be better. Mods always seem to improve everything...

I rewired a few speakers until I did that check on one pair. Just sounded exactly the same. never fretted about internal wire since.

replacing out of spec crossover components, that is worthwhile.

struth
22-12-2022, 19:43
Inclined to think if wire is ok and it should be then leave it alone. They were not cheap stuff so they will have used decent conductors. Obviously oos components need replacing. The connectors could be replaced to 4mm sockets if your keeping them, else leave them as is

andyrlb
22-12-2022, 19:45
I think I will do the binding posts as I can’t see that devaluing them. Hate the silly little din sockets .

struth
22-12-2022, 19:49
yup you can replace them or make up a set of short connectors that will do same job easily enough.

Use a tuner and press the mono button.

Lawrence001
23-12-2022, 07:58
Or run them both in parallel from a single channel from the amp. If you're worried about low impedance (eg a pair of 4 ohm speakers from a low current amp) then run them in series ie connect the -ve of one speaker to the positive of the other and then the negative back to the -ve of the same channel. Don't use any trippy phasey recordings though, something with a pretty basic recording with everything near the centre.

Never tried it but I don't think it will blow anything up [emoji23]

Wasn't he responsible for the production on The Beatles' "Let it Be"? My least favourite of their albums, largely due to the sound.

Barry
23-12-2022, 17:13
Spector was an advocate of 'mono only' recording for pop music, since in his opinion that is how records would have been reproduced on record players in the '60s.

You are quite correct, Spector was asked by John Lennon to work on 'Let It Be', and George Harrison asked Spector to produce some of his solo work.

But to answer Grant's comment - yes most of my blues and early jazz records are mono. :)

So after more research the midrange is in fact an iTT model, suspiciously similar to the atc’s though.

Hi Andy,

More than a year ago we talked about your 107s. How do these sound in comaparison with those, and the Kef driver house sound in general?

I saw those M75 on eBay! Good value I thought.

Hi , how’s things?
These are surprisingly similar to the 107’s which is probably why I enjoy them so much , the bass goes real deep though , in fact I find myself hunting down loss less tracks as the bass is so nice . The ones on eBay are in fact the M100’s , the big brother to mine .

Hi Andy, apart from a very nasty bug over Christmas all is well- I presume all must be going well for you as you've managed to sneak in the aforementioned pair of M100 without being crucified by the missus! Top work.

Yes I would say the m100’s must be the best speakers I’ve ever heard, the bass from the 12” woofers coupled with the super tweeter is just incredible.
