You were very supportive when my marriage went tits up. And things not going badly there, yet.
Has anyone any experience of dating websites? They seem to be aimed at younger folk than me, and perhaps more socially adept. My mostly female and married colleagues are very encouraging that I ought to get out there...

Dont do GrindR!

Don't do introduction agencies they're a scam. And I read that some websites charge a minimum period like a year (think it was Match.com) so if you meet someone quick you have to keep paying them even though you're not using them any more.
Have a free browse and see if anyone your age comes up, they should have an age filter of some sort if only a rough range.

They all seem to demand a "investment" ahead...
You confirm my doubts.
I think grindr is a niche app for blokes seeking blokes, not that I have a problem with that, just not for me.

It is, it's was meant as a joke for newbies doing dating sites. ;) One to avoid if you like the ladies.

Try joining a club. Such as a camera club, or U3A or a Bridge club. Can’t guarantee any “results”, but I have seen things work with U3A - even if only socially.
OTOH I know people who didn’t bother and not feeling so tied down, travelled in a camper van with a dog, and didn’t worry about women after their earlier experiences.
Depends really what you hope to achieve. Some of it is up to you.

I would agree with Dave, joining a club is worth trying. Just by starting with a common interest you're halfway there. You get to know the other person at an unforced pace, and in the company of others, so no need for it to feel awkward.
Similarly with night schools and adult college courses. I did a sports therapy course several years ago, and of the 12 people attending 5 were women, and all of them divorced. I wasn't in the market for a relationship - I genuinely wanted to learn - but I think some of the others were.
I wouldn't bother with anything hifi related, they're invariably a right sausage-fest :)

Sausage fest!!!!! I think a camera club would be the same.
Appropriate for "the frying pan" comment...
Bingo? Eh, Mecca? Perhaps I just need to get better at being in my own company. Or get a dog. And a van!
cooking classes maybe... you get to learn some good stuff too. swimming too perhaps if you dont look too bad in trunks lol
what about neighbourhood walking clubs and that sort of thing?
Read some statistics that majority of people find their other half at work. Although dating women you work with, that's prone to all sorts of issues IME.
If you're retired you could volunteer at a charity place, most volunteers seem to be females.

Years ago my brother used a dating site called "Sugar Daddy.com" Presumably pairing women with well off blokes. He ended up with this woman who had way more money than him. She was worth £20m or so. She wasn't looking for a sugar daddy, just someone with enough dough not to be a sponger. They were together for years.

You [OP] may not even have reached that age yet, so good luck.

nothing pervy will get you very far;)... well not on rd you wish. gardening, cycling and hillwalking etc are all good potentially and at least you'll probably be rubbing shoulders with healthy folk, which is a bonus.
im fortunate in that i can get along in my own company ok many cannot tho and need company. a dog or cat may be a good initial comprimise tho, and a dog will get you out etc

FWIW I have just turned 60. I have "access" to the family dog, and certainly he makes it easy to talk to women when out for a walk.
Admittedly when the kids were tiny they were a much better ice breaker!
Hair? Long gone. Teeth, just about. Obese? No, just a bit overweight, but ok by modern standards.
I scrub up ok and pay attention to my hygiene and clothes.
I really like the tone of the support here. Nowt patronising or indulgent. Bit of humour. Excellent stuff.

Have you considered dance classes? You'll find some very attractive ladies there, and it's a good way to keep fit and lose those excess pounds. This is me after just a few weeks...

Having been there myself, dating apps are a good way of casting the net but you have to sort out the nutters and liars, of which there are many sadly. Good ones are out there though. Met my current partner on the Facebook dating app, we have been together two years now.

Of course, yeah, dating apps... And not all women who use Facebook are chavvy screaming skulls off the council estate. Just don't tell them you're into hifi - you need to look like you have some prospects :) And be sure to check her hands aren't bigger than yours, a dead giveaway.

We have friends - a couple - who tried dance classes - as "something they could do together". Didn't quite work out that way, as the guy seems to like dancing, and is good at it, and his wife is merely OK and not bothered.
So he gets to dance with other ladies - no doubt some married, some widowed, and some perfectly single. He's still married - and they still get on OK - but this was an unexpected outcome.
Trouble with that approach is that you might need to break into the scene with a lady - so maybe hire one for the evening. :)

I think I could confidently guarantee no hanky panky, even after several beers... I see this is what passes for a Drag Queen in Chorley. Very similar to Govan then!!!!
nobody would shag that!!...well maybe Marco;)

We are very proud of our women-free status. Ever since Lady Chorley became a Lord, and the inscription on our coat-of-arms was changed to "Nil Requrirus Bintos" which loosely means "Who Needs Women". We've coped perfectly well for decades now, though unfortunately the population is in decline.

You guys... err, well, you guys are brilliant.
I bought a leather hat and I wore it well
Until it got too sweaty and it began to swell
This is not a poem, but the blood it stopped
To supply my brain, then I said cast it off
I was once chased through a factory, aged 18, in the east end of Glasgow, by women my mother's age, and I was fearing for my manhood. I always reflect on that when I think about young women with men their dad's age.
Not good to be sexually assaulted. Or intimidated. Especially difficult for a bloke to admit to. I have been "taken advantage of" sexually and it is not fekkin fun. Doesn't mean I don't have a sense of humour though, but its not a joking matter.
I have always found it difficult to navigate the balance between "independent but cold" and "seductive but suffocating".
FWIW that is what this conversation has led me to. Sorry to take it deep.

All were lovely, but one called Bonny really stood out and we connected straight away (back in October 2021). Today was our second Christmas Day together. We're engaged and moving house together (again) next week.
I was on a few sites, but Match really is the best. Not expensive, min 6 months as most are.

When on your first date, how did you work being called Big Bob Joylove into the conversation? Must have been quite an ice breaker :)
As someone who turns 50 tomorrow but is happily married, I dont think I could face any sort of trawling experience, whether it be dating sites or out in pubs. I go to a gym with mixed ability classes, I dont think there is an easier way to meet females who tend to have a positive outlook, look after themselves, and aren't out trawling im pubs. I'd say its a 60/40 mix female/ male and we socialise outside of the gym...Charity events etc...and it's do easy to start conversations with someone who is possibly following you in a circuit class or pairing with you in a class that you works in twos.
No brainer.

When I moved to Worcester I knew nobody. I built a social circle with salsa dance friends. Salsa dancing was great.
After some years I moved again and after trying various clubs like a mountaineering club for night walks on the Long Mynd I completely by chance came across a Hashing group. The members are from different backgrounds - farmers, teachers, a barrister and the common denominators are a liking for supping real ale and not too serious trail running. I hated cross country running at school but hashers meet at a pub - different each week and follow a trail with false trails to negotiate. Some walk, some run and most do a mixture. An hour later we're back at the pub for socialising. Lots of 'down downs' for any slip ups on the trail. I met my wife in the group. There are get-togethers for meals and dances. Look up hash house harriers. People hash all over the world - lots of brilliant international meet ups.

It was Mothers Pride in the east End of Glasgow, Duke St I think and I was an apprentice engineer when they were building the new factory! 1982 ffs!!! I was 19! Hot summer, I was in my shorts and builders boots. Incendiary in retrospect...

For the sake of equality of opportunity etc, I don't dismiss the larger woman, both of my wives have been well provided for physically, but I am not keen on skinny celebrity types, so please don't recommend them to me, I had enough dating that Paltrow woman... with her candles. She wouldn't take no for an answer.

Clearly Glasgow was a bit behind the times fashionwise. "YMCA" brought that look to the charts 3 years earlier :) Did your mates in the east end of Glasgow not tell you to "Go West!"?
I'm so sorry, I'll get me coat.

Only just in Wales... but I know what you mean.
When I was 18 I worked in a major bread bakery in Glasgow- on the way to the changing rooms/toilets I would get sexually harassed in a way that would not be correct these days and wasn't really then, by women my mum's or aunt's age, and what they threatened to do to me in the shower was, well, scary!!!
You're close to Newport then? My home town, the women there are looser than a, uhhhh, searches brain for a loose analogy, looser than a dog off a leash, no, looser than an untied lace, no that's shit. Wait, looser than a split bag of potatoes, oh shit, I'll get me coat. Anyway, go to Newport, and hang out in a town centre pub.

Not close, sadly, or perhaps not... Half way up the border, Montgomery. There's always Wrexham if I'm not choosy!

Lovely part of the world. I used to go out with a bird who lived in a converted barn near Church Stoke so I used to stay there periodically. Apart from cars and electricity I don't think it was at all different from how it was in the 1800s.
No-one seems to know about that area, it doesn't seem to be on the tourist map. At least not when I was there but that's almost 30 years ago now so maybe it's all changed. I sort of hope not.

Wife and kids are near Church Stoke, up a hill... Bishops Castle not far. I've been in the area about 20 years- not much has changed other than the Co-op have taken over Tuffin's supermarket so they don't sell welding rods anymore!! You are welcome to visit. ;)

I remember Tuffins, I think they had three stores? A shame they have gone.
I used to get the bus from Newcastle Under Lyme to Shrewsbury and my lady would pick me up from the bus station. I don't know if that service even runs anymore. It was always full of RAF personnel as it ran past some air force base. Happy days, even though I was on the dole and dead broke.

RAF Shawbury. I spent 4 weeks laying the runway there as a University summer job. I could tell you a tale about the day we took a roadsweeper round to the mess for lunch and had to abandon it in the car park when the air brakes got stuck on. The RAF were fine about it but the foreman was not pleased.
lost air...:D happens a lot
