View Full Version : Dead motor capacitor?

My electrically operated gates use a 10uF (+/- 5%).
Following a problem of one not working properly, I discharged the capacitor, and took it off to measure it.
It measure 8.2 uF on my multimeter, which is out of tolerance, but is it still ok?

It is about €10 for a replacement.

I am just wondering if the capacitor is at fault or if the problem lies elsewhere.

If you'd gone for cheaper "get out of your car and open the gates yourself" gates, you could have afforded better fencing to keep the wild boars out

The gates and fences were already fitted when I bought the house 13 years ago.
And where is the interest in opening the gates myself? Seems like hard work to me.

I found out why the gate is not working properly.
I will also be replacing the capacitor, as it is below spec. The one in the other motor is just under 10uF.

They are pretty common here in France.

After thinking I had fixed it, it still didn't work.
So I stripped it down again and found a broken weld between the output gear and the shaft.

I just need to pull the bearing off and reweld it, and then I am good to go...

If it doesn't, it is going in the bin.

I have finally had the opportunity to fix the gates today, as it is the first time since the 16th Dec where I am spending 24 hours at home.
The motor was stripped down, again, and I managed the remove the bearings. I cleaned up the shaft to remove the molybdenum grease, ground the weld between the shaft and the gear down, and welded them back together.

I replaced the motor capacitor whilst I was in there, and now the gates work again.
Happy days….
