Crossover components - Castle speakers

Morning all
Apologies in advance for what may seem like a naive question about crossover components in my speakers.
But as I don't know the answer - I hope no one minds me asking.

The right hand crossover is from a Castle Avon. The other one is from a Severn.
On the Avon crossover, the yellow (I assume it's a capacitor) at the bottom of the crossover (marked Expotus 4.7J) has red tape around it. Under the tape is some white coloured, what looks like, thermal type paste.
It's starting to come away.
Is it likely to serve any useful purpose? - I can't see that it does.
Just want to check it's OK to remove and clean off the paste.
Sorry for the naive question, but I have zero experience of this sort of thing.

It's glue. Clean off and replace using epoxy or a glue gun. It just stops components vibrating.

How come you have them out are you going to re-cap them?

Thanks. Still not sure how a small piece of what looks like narrow electrical tape could stop a vibration, but that's just a reflection of how little I know/understand about these things. The tape just seemed to be wrapped half way round the capacitor, attached to nothing else.

The Severn X-overs are ‘spares’ which I’ve swapped in and then out of my Severns. I’ve convinced myself they sound better than the originals.
The Avon crossover came out because one of the mid range/bass units had blown and I replaced it with a driver from a pair of Edens where a similar thing had happened. So I currently have a non working mid from the Avons which I don’t have the skill to repair (broken tinsel wire).
When I first purchased the Severns I asked for advice about work needed (possibly here, possibly on the WAM) and the consensus seemed to be not to bother with a recap.
Currently trying to decide which pair to keep. The Avons are a fuller sound but the Severn cabinets are probably some of the best anyone would find, anywhere.

Yeah I can prob see why you've been advised a recap is not worth the effort. Not the most revealing speakers but ones you want working nonetheless.

For a test you could buy some cheap replacements from say hifi collective and see how they sound after. Do one cap at a time and obv only 1 speaker at time too. You might like what you hear after that.

Agreed. Spot on. The Castles are currently vying for position in my 2nd system (dining room). Main hifi now has recapped Celestion 44s.
