Ok people, whatever you do don't think i'm crazy, maybe a little mad :eyebrows:

I'd like to see if someone can answer this question because to me it makes some form of sense ;) Before i ask though i'll be stating the obvious to those who know a bit about full size horns for bass loading (& how damn huge they are ).

In free space a bass horn is radiating into 4 pi steradians (a sphere) & the horn mouth needs to be "X" circumference to be flat down to "Y" frequency (don't stress over what X or Y is right now ;)).

If the horn was buried into the ground so that the mouth is at ground level it'll be radiating into 2 pi steradians & the mouth can be half the area of the 4 pi model & still reproduce down to X. This means not only is the mouth smaller but the horn will be shorter given the same size drive unit.

Again if the horn is now placed against a wall & the ground it'll be radiating into 1 pi steradian & the mouth size can be halved yet again for the same low frequency cutoff. again the horn gets shorter :)

Finally if it is placed into a corner it'll be radiating into 1/2 pi steradian & you guessed it the mouth area can be halved yet again.

Now here is the question. The corner horn is still radiating into 3 dimensions, assuming a horn was built that radiated from a corner but the mouth was the same height as the room it'd now be only radiating into 2 dimensions rather than 3...

Could the mouth size be possibly halved yet again or am i just going crackers thinking up this stuff?

 Answers or even hints or any other comments are welcome, it's been bugging me for a few years now

Mark, join Audio-Talk and ask the question there.A chap with the moniker Scottmoose will be able to answer your question. There is little he doesn't know about speaker design.

That rings a bell ;)

I have asked this elsewhere & got no kind of satisfactory reply

I may well do as you suggest, thanks for the input Ali :)

Oh, shit. I thought you were looking for horny designers. http://www.q-audio.com/images/biggrin.gif

So, what do you have in mind? Something deliriously crazy like this?

Pmsl @ horny designers :eyebrows:

Similar, but those ones pictured still don't have the horn mouth from floor to ceiling? Doesn't look like it to me, i may be mistaken though :) They are probably near though  Just larger than this would be by twice the size. You'd only need one to do the job as well ;) After all the efficiency would be rather good to say the least :eyebrows:

That's the whole crux of my thinking. Can the horn mouth be made smaller if it's only going to expand into two dimensions rather than three as a normal corner horn would

Mad speakers by the way :lolsign: Mad volume potential

Oh absolutely! You'd be able to flap your pant legs with a sparrow fart's worth of power.

Yeah. And unfortunately that's something I haven't the answer to. But I'm a fan of horns and other high efficiency speakers so your thread caught my attention.

You got it!

I've got a design on paper for a large, FUN speaker that I hope to get fleshed out sometime early next year.

Inspiration's a combination of the large JBL 4350 studio monitor and the Altec Model 19.

A pair of 18's on the bottom in sealed enclosures (in spite of their being so large, I'm making them for a rather smallish room and sealed has worked quite well in that situation). Up top is a 12 inch mid/bass and a Peavey quadratic throat waveguide.

http://www.q-audio.com/images/large_fun.jpg

If that works out well, I may go stark raving mad and stack another pair of 18's on top.

So are you in a situation where you're able to actually pull off a floor-to-ceiling horn? That'd be too damn cool.

I don't care how far away the neighbours live - you've got to imagine that at least 290 wpc of those Levinson 33's are never going to see the light of day in that system - !

Hi Mark,

I can't help with the horn design but your mention of burying the horn in the ground reminded me of this: LINK (http://www.royaldevice.com/customita3.htm#HORN SUBWOOFER") Scroll down the page.

When I win the lottery I'll simply have to get one of those built.

Yeah, seen that before. That goes beyond mad. I actually find it a bit disturbing. It's like OCD meets hoarding.

I seem to remember an article about a guy who build a folded horn in the roof space above his listening room. A simpler solution is to use the chimney (if you have one) as a transmission line. :)

No, on the contrary that is fully there :eyebrows: You can see that the horn goes from left to right wall & damn near from roof to floor to. But because it goes from wall to wall it's the same as from floor to ceiling! It's radiating in just 2 dimensions.

Look at the length of it, it's tiny :eyebrows: Probably doesn't go too low but i bet it makes a lot of bass in it's bandwidth ;) It'd be like nearly the whole wall moving

The Mobile Acoustic Source

http://www.noiseaddicts.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/was3000-2small.jpg

.....

The Mobile Acoustic Source (MOAS) is a pneumatically driven 56 ft long fiberglass horn designed to be a high amplitude acoustic source. The source of airflow for MOAS is a rotary compressor driven by a 150-hp diesel engine. This gives a maximum flow rate of 1200 cubic feet per minute a a pressure of 7.5 pounds per square inch. The airflow passes through a Wyle WAS-3000 modulator, which is electrically driven to produce the fluctuations in the airflow. The modulator is remotely operated due to the output intensity of the source. The fiberglass horn is designed to match the impedance between the modulator and the atmosphere over the frequency range of operation. The frequency range of operation is 10 to 500 Hz with a maximum output level of 145 dB with minimal distortion. These characteristics allow for the system to reproduce the acoustic signal in frequency and amplitude from most potential acoustic targets. The system can broadcast single tones, multiple tones, or tape playbacks. The system can be operated off of hard power, generator, or inverter. The trailer can be easily compacted to allow for transportation on any commercial highway.

Specifications:

Frequency Range: 10-500 Hz

Output Level: 145 dB (re: 20 m Pa)

Output Signal: Single Tone, Multiple Tones, or Tape Playback

Remote Operation

Utility:
Low Operating Cost Acoustic Target

Long Range Detection (5-15 km)

Countermeasures

Low Frequency Active Noise Control
