View Full Version : VPI Scout TT Mmmmm
Just picked up what appears to be a very nice TT .
So who would want this beauty?
I’m trying to figure out which tone arm it has ( 9” or 10” etc )
And what does the black base/plinth do ? ( it doesn’t touch the TT )

Cheers Grant , do you know how you measure the tone arm to establish its length, they do a 9” 10” and a 12”
Yes I guess the black base maybe for absorbing vibrations.

Most 9" tonearms are 9", or 228 mm, from pivot to stylus.:eyebrows:

Funny bugger [emoji1787]
I didn’t know where you measure from and to [emoji1303]

lol just a jest.. ortofon label there arms as distance from pivot to spindle, but the length of arm will be the actual size..

The cart should sound nice.
There were cheaper VPI models, I had the HW19 briefly.

A ha ! So you were correct again Grant , the base thingy is a vibration control platform, similar to this one but I have no balls [emoji1787]

Sounds like that might be worth a try actually

Definitely a VPI 9 inch tonearm internally damped and a Unipivot. One of the best designs they make and sound better than the gimballed bearing arms.
The plinth is MDF with massive slab of steel fixed to the bottom hence the hefty weight.
It is a superb sounding turntable - I have this exact model. Except mine has the steel platter not acrylic.
If you want to know anything about set up or optimising it just ask. i have been fettling mine for 7 years!:)

Loads of people use squash balls to good effect for dampening etc.

You should have a metal jig with the turntable that allows you to position the overhang on the cartridge perfectly?
Yes do keep in touch, you will be the only other person I know who has a VPI Scout 1.1

I wondered if it was a 1.1

I now realise why I thought it wasn’t a 1.1 , because all the 1.1’s that I can see they all have a metal platter?

Yes yours is an early 1.1 but they changed quite quickly too metal platter. They also changed the tonearm later on to the gimballed bearing arm because a lot of folk did not like its wobbly nature. The Unipivot is definitely the better arm though SQ wise. VPI changed the tonearm cable from I think discovery cable to Nordost at some stage. I think mine is Discovery.

Very nice Andy.
That DV should sound nice, I have the earlier Karat Ruby, bought almost NOS.

Sadly Alan the amp I’m currently using as my preamp is the Roksan K2 and it only supports mm not mc .
I’ll be selling the TT once I figure out it’s value.

yeah, about that i'd think... if no cover then maybe a little less

The tonearm cost at least £1000 on its own.

I'd be tempted to keep the cartridge.

I’d have no use for it mate , other than stare at it or if I wore jewellery it would look good on a necklace.

Cartridge currently selling for £1400 at Analogue Seduction.
Is it not worth selling separately?
Just seen your ad - great looking kit imo, and I would have thought that price would be about right with that cart, assuming it's in good shape. GLWS :)
