Guys,

I'm having a little trouble trying to determine the unit measure for stiffness, I'm assessing the merits of Sapphire and ruby cantilevers. I'd like the stiffest cantilever, I have four options diamond, ruby, sapphire and boron. Diamond is obviously the stiffest but where do the other sit?

Any ideas, or prods in the right direction would be most welcome.

Ruby and sapphire are similar, being impure single crystal forms of aluminium oxide. Both are anisotropic in their stiffness, whose value depends on crystal orientation. To assess either the flexural or torsional stiffness, you need to know the Youngs Modulus and the Poisson Ratio for each.

The mechanical properties of either are so similar, I wouldn't worry about which of the two is the better for stylii cantilevers.

Boron has better properties, but is difficult to work with.
