Rega Planar 3 Speed Problem

Don’t know if anyone can help

My partner has a Rega Planar 3 that just isn’t behaving properly. We’ve just replaced the drive belt but the speed is all over the place

Just wondered if anyone can throw any light to what might be wrong

Thanks for your message Dave. We’ve purchased a new pulley and it’s fine. The drive pulley seems to be running off and on though, hope that makes sense….. I’m new to turntables :eek:

When you say "off and on", do you mean it's loose and slipping ?

Depending on age, it could be the capacitors on the circuit board need replacing - you can get kits on eBay for a few quid. Mine would be fine for a couple of tracks then went haywire.

Oops yes Dave it’s loose and slipping. The drive belt is new so it’s not that. If you watch the motor pulley it’s just not constant. I’ve read that some people fix it by gluing the pulley to the spindle but not too keen on doing that

If you are (understandably) not keen on gluing the pulley, perhaps fixing some double-sided tape to it's underside may work? Should be strong enough to keep it in place, and if you ever needed to remove it, some solvent, like acetone (nail polish remover) dripped down that little hole should do the trick. Assuming the hole passes all the way through.

Why not just take it to the nearest Rega dealer. They should know exactly what's wrong with it and arrange for it to be fixed for what shouldn't be too much.

The official fix for a loose pulley is a tiny spot of Superglue dripped, very carefully into the pulley hole after scraping off any surplus old glue..Push the pulley firmly onto the spindle and the job's a good 'un.

You don't need caps or double sided tape or any mods.

Any Rega stockist will do this FOC.
