We buy all our fruit and veg from the village greengrocer. But yes I agree, the strawberries for sale at the moment are enormous: yet they still have good flavour despite their size.

I like raspberries as well, and usually have a few with museli for breakfast.

There was quite a lot of sun today - which probably helped our electricity bill - and enabled us to have showers at almost zero cost.
Useful, since something seems to have failed with the oil boiler - it doesn't seem to be firing up, so we have resorted to the immersion heater.

Needless to say I put the car away in the garage, otherwise sitting in the sun it would be unbearably hot. Perhaps I ought to buy one of those metallised windscreen shield, to prevent the steering wheel becoming uncomfortably hot. When out and about the A/C does a splendid job.

I'm not sure where the sensors for the car will be located, but it will be somewhere shaded to give a true(ish) reading. Which will be nowhere near the temperature you have inside the car, which right now could be high 30s easily. No wonder your house feels cooler.

A few years ago I replaced the garage roof and used the Firestone EPDM rubber. The air temperature was mid 20s, but the rubber's surface was burning my knees. I laid a thermometer on the roof and it went straight to its maximum 50C. :eek:

I waited for a cloudy day to finish the job.

Re hot parts of the world - just returned from a few - Greece/Turkey. Possibly London is going to beat temperatures in those countries, but generally they are hotter. Have lived in parts of the USA which were way hotter - but much dryer. Humidity is a factor which makes hot weather feel unpleasant. We went from CA to Hawaii - and didn't like the weather there at all. OK - but felt hotter and more humid. One problem with very dry heat is that it is important to keep skin covered and use oil - to reduce the risks of skin cancer or burning. That includes taking care with sandals. I once went out with sandals in France, and the parts which didn't get the cream were my feet. Agony for days while the skin peeled off!

FWIW also lived in cold countries, and coming back to the UK in the winter - can say that +2C in the UK can feel a lot worse than -10C in a cold country if the weather is really damp - which it often is in the UK.

Good luck with the heat - enjoy the beer. It'll all be over (probably) in a couple of days. Then we can all go back to moaning about the lousy weather! :-)

Yes, I know what you mean about humidity. I once spent a couple of weeks trekking in northern Thailand which was pretty humid. What with the sweat and wading across creeks and streams, I was constantly wet. After a couple of days, I got used to it.

The rule of thumb when in hot countries is to drink enough water to maintain copious clear (i.e. not cloudy) urine. Once when travelling in Gabon I took a leak and was shocked to see my urine was a bright fluorescent orange! Needless to say I immediately downed a litre of water. And yet on another occasion when trekking in the Dhar Adrar region in Mauritania I became delirious (my speech was clear and not slurred, yet was incoherent and didn't make any sense), yet my pee was perfectly OK. Obviously on that occasion I had not been drinking enough. Again I drank about a litre of water, poured the same amount over my head and took a half hour nap under a tree in an oasis to recover.

Currently 20C and edging up. We have an outside thermometer stuck to one of our windows - right now at 20. Yesterday it must have caught the sun, as it went crazy and was showing 50 - right at the top of its scale. I thought it wasn't going to recover, but it has gone back down. Not accurate I think, but gives an approximate indication.

I don't know what kinds of thermometers give good or accurate readings. In the years when one could buy mercury or alcohol thermometers I think weather like this would burst the bulbs - which I recall happening with a few in the past. Just not sure that the new fangled electronic ones are really any good - but I've got a spare pack which I've never tried, so could deploy those.

Anyway my expectation is that it won't be much worse than yesterday - which up here was OK, and some of us will be moaning about the cold in a few days.

I don't want to encourage anyone with bad eating habits, but sometimes in very hot weather adding salt to a drink, or eating a bag of crisps can make things more bearable. Not to be undertaken for long periods, but some people may find that helpful. Not more than a teaspoon - in a glass of water or cup of tea - probably try much less than that. If you can't taste the salt then you may find this useful. If you can taste the salt, give up immediately as you've probably already got the right salt balance.

my daughter used to be bad for that.. a big pot of tatties in water and a little pinch of salt :doh: they are taught it at school.. you need a decent amount of salt in water to cook them so they actually taste like something worth eating.:eek: she is improving tho and both her and hubby are very decent cooks now.
