Tashiko Digital CD783

Absolutely no idea what I've just bought... Anyone any ideas?

I came across a CD player in a charity shop for a tenner. Brand name is "Tashiko Digital."

I've been after a CD player for a little while so thought I might as well. A half hour of googling, and I'm still no clearer on what it is that I've got here.

Listening now, don't really know what I'm listening for. Suppose I should be comparing CDs to hi quality streaming in terms of working out what the quality is.

The special edition badge looks identical to a Marantz, and it reminds me of a pic I saw once of an early model that was the first to get an SE badge. Maybe the first CD63, or CD73 or something. I'll do some more digging.

That looks like a very old design to me. With LED 7 segment display.

My guess would be a very bright and flat sound stage.

I did wonder if it was something rebadged, or if it was someone's budget range for a specific market or something.

Given that there doesn't seem to be any info on them anywhere, I'm not averse to opening it up, having a nose around inside, and posting pics.

I found this short promotional film which bears some resemblance to the 'Mr Sparkle' video from the Simpsons. It's not in English though. And it may not be the same Tashiko.

It does play! A slight worry that I'd wasted ten pound (or rather, donated, so hardly wasted) when I had no sound at first. All looked good, so I wondered if the random interconnects I'd grabbed from the box-o-cables were dodgy, or perhaps an issue with that hitherto unused CD channel on the amp. Then I realised I hadn't turned the amp on.

Sounds good, certainly worth what I paid for it. Not knowing anything about it means that I don't have any prejudices about what I'm hearing.

That autoparts shop above is interesting. I wondered if Tashiko is a surname, or possibly a name of a city, or possibly the name of a factory. I'm reminded of how Matsumoku was a factory in Matsumoto that is mostly known for making some excellent guitars in the 70s and 80s, but had previously made furniture and cabinets for Singer sewing machines.

Searching "tashiko" in Amazon brings up loads of different replacement remote controls for various Tashiko products with what look like model signifiers in their names. Googling these model signifiers has so far given me nothing, except more replacement remote controls. I was hoping to see if there was maybe a Japanese domestic market TV company or something.

Altogether weird, but sort of nice to find a product in this day and age that the internet doesn't seem to know what it is. I'll open it up this weekend and see if there's anything inside that gives it away.

I have a Marantz CD67SE in my system and the 'Special Edition' on the Marantz is written exactly the same as on your CD player.

Perhaps someone who worked for Marantz and started their own company, who knows.

Anyway, as long as it works....:)

Opened it up. CD drive part on the left has a brand on it "MITSUMI" (not really legible in photo). There is also a logo here that matches the logo on one of the circuit boards (just to the right of the transformer).

Any of this mean anything to anyone?

Mitsumi - OEM manufacturer. So they probably knocked these up for a chain of electrical stores or department stores, like Saisho at Dixons or Matsui at Curry's.
