View Full Version : Heybrook returns.
Interesting…

If I hadn't found a pair of HB2's left outside a house in the rain to be dumped and renewed the midrange foams I would never have known how good they were. They were quite expensive when new. Of course the size and weight of them makes them unattractive to some these days and they would seek something more "modern" looking. IMO there is no real substitute for size and the 10" bass of the HB2's is a good one IMO.
Will be interesting to see how many different models they bring out and at what sort of prive level.
I think price is in the region of three grand. Even allowing for inflation that's about 7 times more than the original HB1 cost in the 1980s.
Of course it isn't the same design, not by a long-shot.

Got me excited for a couple of minutes but then I saw the price.
Back in the day we struggled to get them in fast enough as part of a budget system - Rega Planar-3, Creek 4040 and Heybrook HB1, our go to choice but the price has escalated somewhat even bearing in mind the passing years.

They can go to hell for all I care. Extremely overpriced.

Surely the dimensions are all wrong for an HB1. Look more like my Heybrook solos.

That's because they have "a twenty-first-century cabinet"

Wilmslow Audio do a fully built version for £1100I think they are copies of the original design? So a different speaker, not necessarily better or worse

£1100 !!!!!!! What a joke !!!! :mental: I'd try to find a good pair of the original 80's version of the speaker for a decent price.

Has anybody bothered to have a listen to them yet?
I don't think they are out yet, not even any reviews.

crazy prices !
i had the HB2 s in the early 80s, bought in 79.
dont remember the bass unit being very big
8'' i would have thought
i blew 1.
not suitable for uni parties ;)
HB2s had a 6.5” Audax bass unit with a rubber surround. It was the HB1’s 8” Vifa unit that suffered from foam rot.
The new ones will be out later in the year, I believe.

Seems a fair price :) given that the cabinets are made from Hidrofugo - a water resistant mdf. It's £245 per 8 x 4 sheet.
I wasn't aware of this until today but apparently there is a trend called 'Newtro' which is ''an amalgamation of trends of the modern and retro eras (namely, the 1980s and 1990s) in all fields of life, such as fashion, music, movies, beverages, food, architecture, electronics, etc''
Started in Korea in 2018
I suppose these Heybrook speakers and new Mission 770, Wharfedale Linton, Epos ES14 are all a part of it.
''There are also criticisms of the Newtro phenomenon. With great emphasis on the Newtro trend, more and more people end up consuming Newtro culture, leading to concerns that are being overlooked due to economic gains. Professor Kyun-Sik Jang of the Department of History at Chung-Ang University pointed out the dangers of consuming the Newtro culture without historical awareness. Some are concerned that the area which become a Newtro Landmark only borrows tradition as a commercial concept, but loses its original identity''

I would argue that it started twenty years ago when BMW introduced the new Mini, which was about twice the size of the old one, closely followed by FIAT with the 500.

Good point. I guess it's taken the audio industry that long to catch up. I suppose they don't have anything like the budget for marketing research that the auto industry has.
Not so sure about that. Mission and Wharfedale are IAG companies so their ‘home’ market is China, and this retro stuff is huge over there. Whether Heybrook can pull off the same trick in the UK remains to be seen. Hope so. PJC usually knows what he’s doing.

Happens to all of us. I'm thinking of "Newtro"-ising my username from Pigmy Pony to just plain Pig.

Oh dear, two of the worse decades in music: post-punk 'New Romantics' and 'yacht rock'! :spew:

you're joking, the two worst decades have been the last two.

I said "two of the worse", not "the two worse".
I said "two of the worse", not "the two worse".
There's only been six though - I'd put them in the order 1970s, 1960s, 1990s, 1980s, 2000s, 2010s
