Some changes to the small room

There's been some changes made to the small room in the last few weeks so time for an update methinks.


Though this room is only small, it seems to suck the bass out of most speakers, so the blessing (or the curse) is that I can (have to) use rather large speakers without having issues with bass boom, (my excuse anyhoo).


The kit list now reads:

It may be small but it looks nicely appointed with some 'mood' lighting, a serious listening chair and a nice colour scheme. Neat and tidy too!

Yeah, just finished decorating it and getting everything set up, the chairs too comfy, usually wake up in it about 4 in the morning.

A well equipped little room that is :) Some nice kit in there to & i can imagine that it's very enjoyable, your description of waking up at 04:00 kind of confirms this :eyebrows:

I'd be tempted to swing the rears in towards the chair as it looks like the drivers might be slightly forward of where your head would be (or possibly in line). Just a possible suggestion ;)

I couldn't complain a bit though, nice little getaway you have there :cheers:

Listening chair comes forward into the middle of the room for movies and games in surround so the back speaks are where they need to be.

You described it perfectly, it is my "getaway" from everything and I enjoy it thoroughly, whether listening to a jazz player in a smokey little club, watching some spiffy dude in a long leather mac n dark glasses snog Trinity or gaming, which at the mo is wandering round the African Savanna blasting anything that moves in Farcry 2 (beautiful game) which I'm about to do next, soon be 4 am again.

I would hope your keeping the volume down to a minimum.
6 channels in such a small untreated room would be a reflection nightmare.
If you toe in the floor standers it will reduce some side reflections.
The sub can be tilted slightly up in the front and the rears slightly raised at the rear pointing slightly down.
You can tweek things and turn up the volume to see if it's better or worse.

I didnt put a system like that together just to keep the volume down, and the Ushers love to boogie.

Believe me, much tweaking and twiddling has been done and I'm happy with the results, no nightmares remain.

As for reflections, all rooms have them, big or small, treated or not, the big factor is "when" said reflection reaches your lugoles, also, not all reflections are bad.

The big Ushers were in a room five times that size before they came to me, yet I've managed to get deeper tighter bass.

Boils down to one thing, you cant judge how a room will sound by looking at a picture of it.

Think I'm gonna get a hammock, then the bed can go and I can get another pair of floorstanders for rears :lol:

The big Ushers were in a room five times that size before they came to me, yet I've managed to get deeper tighter bass.

Boils down to one thing, you cant judge how a room will sound by looking at a picture of it.
Funny that you mention this as this is exactly what i also find ;) Once you get below the frequency of the lowest standing wave the room can produce all the bass is incredibly tight & detailed simply because the room can no longer mess the sound up at those frequencies :eyebrows:

I'm getting very decent bass right down to 15Hz that can be both felt & heard in a room with the longest dimension of just over 4M.

Bigger rooms simply lower the frequency that the room can react with & this probably explains why a good friend of mine is never content with the sound of his system, he can't get the bass right no matter what he does :(

The room the Ushers came out of was about 5 times the size but had a bass hump at about the 80hz mark, if anything, my little room seems to suck the bass out for some reason, I've had some fair sized speakers in there and you'd think the woofers had been disconnected.

For a bit of daft I set the system up firing across the room instead of down its length and talk about boom, I'd have got decent bass from a pair of tweeters, which meant I could have got away with some small standmounts, but me likes big speakers.

It was a McIntosh integrated amp I took away, though, not an Audio Analogue Maestro...

Don't you remember it got damaged in transit and developed a fault? That's why you guys had to come and pick it up.

It was a pity, as I really liked that amp, and would've bought it had it not been faulty. Jeez, that could've sent me on a whole different direction in terms of my system! :eek:

I got into valves, big time, shortly after that...........

I had an LP12 too in those days, if you remember? The Spendors have been gone for over a year now. These days I have huge Tannoys, which make the Spendors look like toys!! :eyebrows:

Yes - and bloody hell do they work well! :eek:

They're 'Lockwood Majors' with 15" Tannoy Monitor Golds inside and bespoke high-grade crossovers.

They were SP100s, in Rosewood, from Spendor's 'Classic range'.

Have had the Cheviots and the Ardens so know where your coming from and why you like em, oh, and had a pair of Tannoy 10" dual concentrics recessed into the parcel shelf in the car at one time, driven by a 2 x 50 watt Nakamichi car amp, them were the days.

Gonna keep an eye open for a pair of SP100's, a man can never have too many toys.

Yeah, its one of them things, when you really want to do somat, you'll manage it. I remember reading somewhere about a guy that cajoled his mates into helping get his new speakers up 7 flights of stairs, apparently they were none to happy when they got there to find the speakers were a pair of Living Voice Air Partners.

That pair of 10 dual concentrics in the car ended up being backed up by a pair of Trio 15" 1000 watt subs in a custom built bandpass enclosure in the boot, driven by a 2 x 300 watt pro plus amp that was low passed at 60hz, just for a giggle like.

Split charge system and a huge Amtech alternator had to be the order of the day also as that lot could suck a car battery dry in four & half minutes.

But I digress, thanks for the pics of the spendors, they look as good as I remember, I feel a second system coming on.

Some of us poor loners had to shift Isobariks up the stairs on their own :( I did have help shifting the ATC 100A's though...

The previous Spendor S100's used to sell used for well under a grand and if they still do they'd be a bargain now the inferior but collectable BC3's go for so much (£800+).. SP100's would probably be around £2K I reckon. Don't forget the Harbeth Monitor 40's which are starting to show from time to time for similar money - all these "BBC Inspired" models have similar characteristics - big, warm and "comfy" in the very best sense of the word IMO.
