My first attempt of the year to visit the car boot, coinciding with the first rain in weeks. Oh well I was getting up early anyway. Thing is, it probably hasn't been cancelled, but I'm not buying stuff from folk who are happy to have it out in the rain.
forecast is crap weather all week. No sign of the sun.

Be sure to keep us updated on the road pond, in case I have to modify my approach to Casa Macca next Sunday :)
I will reconnoitre it later on today. With the lack of rain recently it's become a distant memory.

Cloudy 10c right now, forecast to be cloudy 15c, rain unlikely. So I'm off to car boot shortly, just as soon as Mrs p gets out her lazy bed, so I'm not expecting billy bargains.

proper 'no weather day' here.
Sky uniformly grey, no sun, no rain, there's not even any breeze.
Would say we were due a thunderstorm but it's nothing like warm or humid enough. Bit dismal really, I'd prefer heavy rain to this.

May in Scotland though. Said before I was there end of June and I was wearing every stitch of clothing I'd brought with me. It pissed down pretty much constantly too.
Mind you it's not that much warmer here and there's no shortage of rain either.

Actually the midges were not that much of a problem. Possibly due to the foul weather but there was one decent sunny day where I visited Castle Urquhart but still no midges.
The only time I got properly attacked was at the bottom of a very deep lock where the air was thick with them. That was probably the day of the worst weather too.

I have to fit three windows in a house that is so minging I have deliberately chosen Friday, so that my work gear will go straight in the wash when I'm done. I was hoping to do most of the work from outside, now I get to choose between soaking wet and physically sick :(
Last time I worked at a hoarder's house the old lady had passed and the house/contents were going to The Crown, who were not at all interested in the five NM Beatles albums and vintage record case I found. And believe me I did ask ;)
Only dysentery on offer tomorrow.

Was actually not crap today. Got to be sunny and reasonably warm in the end. Not so sure about tomorrow - but Monday looks as thouogh it might revert to more miserable weather - if you believe the forecasts!
The forecasts seem to be all over the shop at the moment, they got today wrong and now they've changed tomorrow's to warm and sunny.
They had it as warm and sunny six days ago, then changed it to heavy overcast with rain, now it's back to sunny.

I know, where's the year gone/ Another five weeks or so and the days will be shortening again.
Early car boot trip tomorrow if it can stay dry. Another Sunday morning of trawling through Robbie Williams and Corrs CDs. And not forgetting Lionel Ritchie's "Can't Slow Down" on knackered vinyl.
The rule at a boot sale is that you can't sell vinyl unless it's knackered or it's something no-one would ever want.

I only went once to a boot sale. We weren't sellling LPs - just general things.
We had some fairly good stuff - which I think was picked up quickly by dealers who were on the lookout for knockdown bargains to sell on.
We also had a lot of 1970-1980s "crap". Things like cassette tape boxes etc.
What was interesting was that many of the tables around us had almost exactly the same stuff!
Does anyone find boot sales useful?

Miserable looking day so far. Around 12C with probably light rain.
Re mowing..
>>>>
Several birds recently appeared, including what I think are greenfinches. Our lawn has a lot of of dandelions in it, and I'm sure the neighbours would like me to cut the grass.
Indeed I was planning to deal with that - we have a robot mower, but there is a boundary wire fault - easily fixable - but I've just not done it yet. One of the birds was going round and seemed to be pecking at seeds by each dandelion stalk. I've hardly ever seen greenfinches (or whatever they are) so maybe now I'll deliberately leave the lawn for now. No Mow May - some people suggest. I think the neighbours are going to have to put up with our tatty lawn for a while longer!
Tough on them!
Some of the new builds down the road from me have front lawns, most of them have grown to over a foot high in just a couple of weeks. Ideal combination of sunshine and rain I suppose. Good for the wildlife, no question about it.
Pigmy Pony
16-05-2022, 11:04
Yer average new build buyers would likely be twenty something dinks who have no knowledge of household chores and even less interest. They just want to move into a house that needs nothing doing. If they look closely at their paperwork I think they'll find grass control is excluded.

Good for the wildlife, no question about it.Just spotted some fast birds - could be swifts or swallows. They come around now, and stay for a month or two. House Martins are also a possibility, but in previous years they were definitely swallows - and I suspected some swifts too. These birds would be more interested in midges and flies than seeds on the ground though, and they are fantastic fliers - very strong. One got into our kitchen a few years ago, and it took quite a lot of strategy and effort to get it out again. There was no way it was going to land. Catching it - no chance! Eventually we managed to steer it towards an opening through which it escaped.
Stronger rain now - it's still pretty miserable.

And in doing so take away much of our land's natural drainage. Then when the drains are overwhelmed and the roads and houses get flooded, they'll go bleating to the council.

yup, building on flood plains risks everyone else as they often shore them up and that moves the problem to people who have never known it before. govt fault for allowing it.

I know from experience that if you let it get too long the mower won't cope and then you have to get a strimmer and chop it back before you can mow.
I think they've passed that point already.
Weeds are really doing well at the moment too. A week ago the gap between my forecourt wall and the pavement was clear. Now there's weeds six inches tall right the way along it. Almost an inch a day of growth.

There are several combined drainage systems in this area, where the foul sewage and rainwater run in one pipe. Needless to say, really heavy downpours surcharge the sewers to overflowing point, resulting in turds and bog paper etc, running down the street. Charming!

You'd be surprised what still exists. During investigations with the local health dept., we unearthed several slab stone box sewers about 150 years old in Acton that had gone uninspected for all that time and still worked fine. It's interesting work and the only stinky drain is a blocked one, especially if disturbed.

Never underestimate the stupidity of yer common or garden scrote.
I heard a news report on the radio a few years ago, of a gang of thieves who dug a tunnel to gain access to a cash machine or something. Based on an estimate of the work required, and the value of the contents, police calculated that the gang earned way less than minimum wage.

Well done Geoff - not sure if I could lift a single slab now. I can remember a time in my twenties when Dad had a ton of cement delivered in hundredweight sacks. He wasn't there at the time so yours' truly had to move them all. Then later a ton or two of sand and gravel was delivered, and I had to move that as well.
Anyway, it looks like you did it in time: the forecast is for heavy rain tonight.

Seems to be a gloomy - approx 15C morning. No rain as yet, but may appear later on - if the forecast is correct.
Another day - I wonder why I bother sometimes. Unfortunately my mood hasn't been enhanced by the failure of our hot water system. We had some work done on our heating system - very major and significant - which seemed to have solved many problems. Unfortunately I now suspect that the electrics haven't been done well enough, as (a) the garage door no longer opens !!! and (b) the hot water programmer trips the switch in the consumer unit. Possibly some earthing wire hasn't been done well enough - seems like a recurrence of leakage current issues.
Another example of "some steps forward .... then a few steps back". As it's a Sunday we'll have to wait until tomorrow to get this set in motion. Bummer!
Mmmm - I wonder if the immersion heater works. Otherwise we'll be smelling for a few days!

16C and cloudy so far.
13c occasional sun and rain. breezy
14C, cloudy, rain later.
No decent weather forecast for here until Saturday which is supposed to be sunny and 18C.
weather doing nothing so thought I'd nip round to the supermarket. Only in there ten minutes, I come out, it's torrential rain.
I'm getting to the point where I am sure it waits until I leave the house, it's like 'The Truman Show.'
On the plus side I do like the smell of rain on warm concrete. It's the smell of summer.

Spoken like a true townie. For me it's the smell of hot sun beating down on fresh tarmac. And when it comes to the sound of summer, nothing beats the buzzing of bluebottles on a freshly laid dog turd on the pavement :)

This morning I had to decide whether to climb up on somebody's conservatory roof in the pouring rain, or go home and play some records - I'm happy with the choice I made :) Dried up now but quite blowy. 16c
Still absolutely no weather here.
Forecast says that here right now it is raining with sun poking through. Neither is true. It's bone-dry and heavy overcast.

bright and breezy at the moment. lots of cloud though, so it could change quite quickly - one of those days where choice of coat, for dog walk, is tricky.

I can't see the dog being that bothered, they don't embarrass easily.
Upper teens, with an occasional breeze. Perfect weather for me to go out and get the grass cut. :)

Been a sunny 18c today, which is just right I think. Clouding over a bit now.
17 - 18oC. Pleasantly warm with just a faint breeze. Spent six and a half hours at a boot sale today, and will probably spend the same tomorrow. However, tomorrow will be cooler, but rain free until the afternoon.

Me too, I will report back tomorrow afternoon. Though I won't be spending much, saving my pennies for Poole/St Ives/Minehead in a few days.
Rained here most of the night. Today's forecast dull with high of 13C.

18C with sunny spells.
Average of 17C. Started to rain at 12:00, exactly as forecast.
Only spent an hour at the local boot sale this morning, as we were feeling lazy, arrived later than intended (but the entry was free) - but I saw nothing I wanted. (DVDs can now be had for 10p each, CDs for 20p each, and LPs just go for silly money!)
Me too, I will report back tomorrow afternoon. Though I won't be spending much, saving my pennies for Poole/St Ives/Minehead in a few days.
Holiday? If so, I hope you all have a good one. :)

Thanks Barry. Yes, three days in Poole (guest house), 3 days in St. Ives, in a "yurt". I really should look up what that means, but it sounds a bit New Age. So we'll be in our yurt, eating yoghurt, and probably muesli. And sat cross legged on the floor playing bongos. Then 2 or 3 days in maybe Minehead, maybe Bath, we really can't decide where to finish up.
There was a nice little record shop in Poole a couple of years ago, I'll give them a visit.

Probably. Just looked at some pics online, and they look like giant tents. Just so long as they're not communal. Though after a night with my bed-farts, we'll have the place to ourselves :)

Does, doesn't it? I have no details, and Mrs. P is telling me nothing, but it's going to look something like this:

I can see there is a woodburning stove in there, but I wouldn't expect much in the way of heat insulation... whatever happens, it's a few days away from work and all that nonsense :)
sure you'll both have fun mate. :) its not for me tho; im more into luxury bedroom suite with french maid :eyebrows:
It's not so much 'New Age' but 'glamping'. :) But does it have en suite facilities?
Should be fun - at least it's a bit different.
Anyway enjoy yourselves.

wet, wet, wet - on the bright side, the countryside around here is looking wonderful - very green and lush
levelled out at 11c and stayed dry at least. in fact in car when i went for a run, for first time i had to put the cooler on. only goes down to 17c tho.
we had a bit of a shower just to relieve the monotony. Sun has come out about twice, very briefly. 13C max.
Tomorrow looking good right now. 15C and sunny, but it seems like they are changing the forecast radically almost every hour.
