View Full Version : Taking liberties with sealed box internal volumes
I have a pair of Eminence Alpha 15" drivers that I want to put in sealed boxes to underpin the very lowest notes on my OBs, say 50Hz and below.
I have looked up the optimum internal volumes for sealed boxes, but the two sets of boxes I have available are either too big or two small.
Is anyone able to describe the sonic consequences of placing the drivers in either of these option boxes? i.e. too big or too small volume

Too small you will get a bass peak, too big you will get early roll-off.
Slightly too big or small will still be fine, it's only if it is way out that it won't work.

Put one driver behind the other isobaric style in one box. That will reduce the system resonance and allow lower frequencies for a given volume. The drivers can still be wired in phase as a stereo pair.

That isobaric suggestion is interesting. I will have a read up and perhaps get back with questions :) Does it mean the box size becomes much less relevant, providing there is enough room to get both drivers in?

It's still partly relevant as the rear driver is still working against the compressiveness of the internal air, but the front driver is effectively in free air.
I have used this principle in the past, I believe it lowers the resonance by a factor of root two or thereabouts.
box size will always matter regardless of the implementation. Isobaric will need a smaller box than conventional loading. Personally I would not go down the isobaric route, there's all sorts of potential pitfalls.

Signal variations in the bass region will largely cancel out acoustically and give an approximation of mono or a summed signal. I think it will work just fine.
