View Full Version : Crap Weather for January.
New year but old weather. Grey, windy, dampish and 12c
Blue sky and a visible sun rising....
Seems like days since I've been able to clearly see the hill out the back for the thick fog.!

13C, bright and dry, with a bit of hazy cloud.
All is quiet on New Year's Day. Soon change that with a bit of Sabbath :D although will wait a bit yet as my neighbour is a barman so he probably had a late one last night.
Not raining here which is unusual. Not doing much of anything really. Sky is uniform light grey. Temperature is still mild but that's set to change regrettably.

Dry and 13c just now
Scotland has enjoyed the mildest New Year's Day on record thanks to a flow of warm subtropical air from the Azores.
The Met Office confirmed temperatures reached 15.9C (60.6F) at Achnagart in Glenshiel, Kyle, on Saturday morning.
This broke the previous peak of 14.5C (58.1F), which was registered at Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, in 1992.
Meanwhile, St James's Park in central London saw temperatures of 16.2C (61.2F) on Saturday.
The previous UK record for New Year's Day was 15.6C (60F), which was set in 1916 at Bude in Cornwall.

No rain obvious so far today. No wind and visibility OK. Mountain tops almost visible through the mist. Weird yesterday - it should have rained ... it did - a bit - and it should have been very windy - which it really wasn't.
Nothing like the 30-40 mph winds we'd been promised!
we have your wind...oh, nurse! ... 20mph wind with gusts of 40. dry currently and about 8c

Now moderate temperatures - maybe 7-10 degrees C. Blue skies - just a few clouds - looks nice.
Another weather warning - this time for snow. I probably don't believe any of this - the weather forecasts seem totally unreliable.

'Work' - what's that?
Pleasantly sunny right now in the early afternoon - and has been most morning, though with a few minutes of sleet - now passed.
Might be worth taking a walk or short trip out.
I've been outside to the bin and back. Does that count?

I've been round the block twice with mutt-chops. That's about as much of the grey gloom as I need.
I think I might go for a quick walk as it's fairly pleasant out. Might be the last chance for a couple of months. But Wheeler Dealers are doing a 1990 XJ6. You can see the bind I'm in.

Snow and ice here today. Murky weather and the snow isn't going away. Time to spend a day or two indoors I think - if the weather forecast is even approximately right.
At least managed to get some more logs in yesterday, so good for a while.
still sunny and cold here. about 1/2c but dropping shortly. at least ch is fixed.
Took dog for walk at sunset - at last, it feels like snow is possible with a bit of luck (I do like country walks in the snow):)
we have snow forecast for 2100 here. Some sleet first though just to get things going.
Going to turn mild again for the weekend.

wont be that much of a difference. i'd go with lack of ice and say therm is reading wrong.

wont be that much of a difference. i'd go with lack of ice and say therm is reading wrong.I was expecting sub zero temperatures up to 9 am, but I looked out briefly around 7am, and there were pools of water - not ice - in the pot stands.
Aso cars not frozen up. Weather forecasts and estimates are often wrong.
currently 3c now with some snow forecast for evening and tomorrow am.
Been snowing here for a while now, starting to stick.
snow forecast to start at midnight and last all night. so it will be white in tha morning folks:D
Our snow didn't stick in the end. Just a bit on the rooves.
No snow predicted in these there parts. :( must not be quite cold enough (5c - as warm as it has been all day) light rain petering out but no frost expected, which is one less job for the morning and school run. Tomorrow looks brighter but still brass monkeys.

Bright blue skies and sunny, but cold (same yesterday) - lovely walking weather, although the footpaths are very muddy/sodden
blues skies here too now. Fog again for later on though.
January really sucks, already feels like it's gone on forever and we're not even half way through yet. Then there's 4 weeks of February. Although at least it starts getting dark a bit later then.
The dark I can handle and the cold I can handle but when it's both together I get fed up with it.
weather held up well. 7c now and starting to darken a bit now. gave car a short run to keep my hand in. its a fun drive tbh. a fair turn of foot in sport mode too.

about 7.6 sec i think if you can control the torque on front wheels. the new tyres help a lot as the older ones spun if you went flat out from standstill in sport. 201 hp and maximum torque is 291 lb-ft.
might add the car is set up for range, not speed and with decent weather and you driving conservatively youll get close to 290 miles

Close, but no cigar. ;)
A balmy 11.5C today. Warm enough for me to wash the car (whilst wearing my wooly hat! ;) )
Did feel like a spring day here too but it's a false dawn and we all know it.
Just lulling us into a false sense of security before the brutality that is February.

A little - mine is black and was made for me by the barmaid in one of the hostelries I used to frequent.
Until recently it had only seen little use: on one occasion in Sinkiang province in Northern China, whilst waiting for a train in the middle of the night; and when in Iceland during November, to see the Aurora Borealis.
a big storm coming in and we may get gust up to 70mph... fabulous:doh:

Met office is only giving 44 mph maximum? Still 'gale force' though.
We aren't having it here really, 24 max.

Has it been windy? Can't say I noticed... though I did get up to find the blue bin on its side this morning. As for fallen trees - when a tree has that much parasitic plants growing on it, you know its days are numbered.
Currently 11c and sunny with a light breeze. Not much heating required, just as bloody well.

Will you need some counselling to help get over the trauma of it all?
It's blowing a bit here now but that's not unusual for these parts. Still sunny though.

No, I just need someone to get out there and stand it up. Looking out the window from where I'm sat, I can see it's still on its side. And no sign of anybody rushing to its aid. If it's still like that tomorrow I'll have to sort it myself. :(Honestly, there's some bone idle buggers about.
blowing like an old bugger again here.. last throes of its violence hopefully...

If they're crowded together they will probably be ok against the elements, it's a strategy that works well for penguins, no matter what the Antarctic throws at them.
Rather less hardy is Anita's worse-than-useless son. He wrapped himself in every item of warm clothing he could find, then took his 3 year old daughter for a walk to the woods. First time I've known that happen. Anyway, they were back 5 minutes later, as it was "too cold" out there  And now he's back on my sofa, eating my crisps and watching my telly, so I don't get to play my records. Maybe it's me that needs to toughen up :punch: Or maybe I should realise that 16 days without a fag is going to affect my tolerance of spineless morons.
Cold is walking on icy ponds, having snowball fights and not being able to use your catapult because your fingers have no feeling. But it didn't keep you indoors. It's 11c and a bit windy. I despair I really do.
well done on the smoking.... cold is oft a matter of what your used to. if your in a cold place and are regularly out in it etc then you soon think -2 is warm, and 11c is tropical:eyebrows:
when a bit younger i worked in all weathers and it was ok really. only time it kinda got impossible was in newcastle working in an underground train tunnel with the wind whistling in on one of coldest winters on record. nothing worked, body wise.

Me and you must be made of sterner stuff Grant, and you're right about tolerance of colder weather being what you're used to. But this boy needs putting in a bag and shaking up. His daughter is over here for the weekend, same as every alternate week, and he stays at ours too, apparently to be with her. But really he's here to get free food and his laundry done. He got out of bed today at 1.30pm, and that is unusual, he's usually up by noon.
laziness is a crime at that age, or any really. needs to get a proper job working out.. up at 6 every morning and do 12 hr shifts in any weather. hard labour too. it'll make a man of him.:D

.. And thinking it was great fun (until you got indoors for tea and yer fingers hurt like hell as they warmed up..! [emoji33]).
But, you're talking of a time we were all outdoors most of the time, except to watch Crackerjack perhaps.! [emoji23]
We didn't have computers, smartphones, Internet, xbox, etc to wash our brains with crap, we just went and met our mates in the flesh and made ourselves some fun..!

Well he might just end up knackered like us, but at least he'll know that he stepped up and did what needed done. And provided a better role model for his daughter.
Never going to happen though - he's had ten times as many jobs in ten years than i have in all my adult life. And lost every one of them through absence and poor punctuality. Society seems better able to look after folk who can't ne arsed these days, it seems.
when wife's son was about 17 he was lazy and idle. she got fed up threatening him and packed his belongings into black bin bags, left them on doorstep and changed lock.
he was dumbstruck. lol but it woke him up and he changed his ways
Well done on the smoking Steve. I don’t think if you were smoking 60 a day it would change your tolerance levels though! Presumably you and Anita are expected to look after his daughter whilst he’s in his pit all morning? I guess I potentially have all this to come, but not sure I’d have the patience... think I’d better sell my Samurai swords!

Had a lovely long walk with dog as the sun was starting to go down - was up to 13.5c in the car before then, clouded over but back to clear skies around 3pm, almost spring like and can see lots of Daffs ready to come through - but temp now dropping like a stone so guessing no cloud cover overnight. Time to light the fire - we’re not out of the woods yet...

Bright, sunny and frosty at around 1.5C.
coldish here too. about 3c... wind to start picking up in afternoon as another big storm passes through.

So far coldish - around 5 degrees. Quiet - unlike yesterday and the previous night which were horrendously windy. I even saw the trunk of one of the oak trees at the edge of our garden rocking slightly. The branches were going all over the place, and I've been concerned that one of the branches might break and drop off. [It hasn't]. Now I'm wondering if the tree is itself safe enough.
There's supposed to be another storm coming through shortly - I just hope it's not as severe.
There was a power failure from around 1am today - which only cleared around an hour ago. It was actually fixed early as we had an estimated fix time of 5pm, and we were trying to figure out the best strategies for the day - and beyond if things turned out badly. Just trying to restore the heating and hot water now.
Clear blue skies beginning to cloud over in patches, warm for the time of year, into double figures I'd think.

Spot on Pete :) And none of it did us any harm either.
Spot on Pete :) And none of it did us any harm either.Well, apart from eating the contents of an Aaprin bottle and mothers 'cooking sherry' as a toddler, falling out of trees, off bikes, into cars, bottles exploding in my face on a bonfire, badly wiring 13A plug aged 6...etc etc.
I fear I may have been single handedly responsive for the modern fascination with H&S, and NHS overspend during the 60s and 70s... [emoji856]
But I'd lived to learn each and every lesson eventually and had a whole bunch of tales to tell..! [emoji23]

, badly wiring 13A plug aged 6...
Thank god we grew up in an age in which as six year olds we could be left alone to get on with such ambitious endeavours, and no-one thought anything of it.

You may also have been singlehandedly responsible for the invention and development of computer games, when it was realised that some kids are not safe to be allowed outdoors :ner:
I managed to straighten the buckets this afternoon. just as well as its very windy again and was lashing rain earlier. i left car plugged in as im not fit for driving yet. got to go to hospital on tuesday so if plugged in i can preheat it without losing any range etc. nothing much beats getting in to a toasty car in the morning in wintertime:eyebrows:

Very windy tonight, though now subsiding quite a lot. Another power cut - but only a couple of hours this time.
Some garden things blown around quite a long way - will have to check the situation tomorrow.

4C, gloomy, gusty wind and light rain. Standard British weather really.
2c and brightish. wind has passed it seems.
Still a howling wind here, which has been going all night, plus a lot of rain although that has stopped now and it's brightened up a bit.
Forecast here for the week ahead is mild with lots of rain. Gets colder and drier next weekend. February is the driest month in these parts.
Bright and breezy, free and easy
5c and cloudy. wind is getting up again too. rain forcast for evening and overnight. hopefully dry and calm tomorrow as ive got hospital.
