Prices are getting silly for the Dynaco A25 speakers Phil, so don't overpay. They're merely OK in my book and that SEAS tweeter lacks analysis.

Thanks for the advice.
I just fancy trying a pair, in a vintage system.
But might have missed the boat re prices.

A lot of vintage gear seems to be getting a bit silly these days.

But funnily enough, some things like marantz pm4, j souundlab 300b, etc....ever popular on the forums.....never seem to go up.

If you want something that sort of size and vintage that sounds good and can still be bought at reasonable prices, check out the Acoustic Research AR6. Just make sure the foam cone surrounds have been done (properly). They're nice speakers!

You can still get cheap Goodman's Magnums which I rate in vintage terms. Or the Magisters if you've got the room.

Always tempted by the magnums but i am in a smaller victorian place now and worry about the bass

I find kef coda 3, heybrook hb1, snell k sort of thing are ideal.
All practically identical in size.

I can increase the volume a little without worrying as much about the bass and the neighbours.

You could try the Ministers or Havants but I've not heard them

Have you tried heybrook hb1?
I have a pair that i really like.
Wondering about putting new bass drivers in as they still make them and supposedly better than refoaming.
But, 150 quid.

No I didn't but I did look around for a pair when I was dabbling with Yarland/Ariand valve amps, I could have got a really good amp/speaker combo for about £300.

Nothing necessarily wrong with fitting new surrounds, at least the older cones don't need to break in again.

Yep, AR6 are a lovely speaker, I friend had a pair for a number of years.

There is one fine vintage standmount speaker that's definitely a bit of a 'classic' that nobody has mentioned and that's the Monitor Audio R852 MD. Much in the same mould as the Snell Type K in configuration and size. Easy to drive, they use top quality Elac drivers with a simple crossover. Prices are still sensible, although I anticipate these will be going up soon.

They do crop up on ebay for under £200, but the only pair at the moment are silly money.

Plenty of the later (inferior) Monitor 9s around but these are hard to get hold of.
