linn pricing

Boy is my finger not on the pricing of current high end hifi...

I got an email from loud and clear ( great dealer in Glasgow) about a 20 percent increase in prices.

Had a wee look at current linn prices....WTF


Is it me!!!!

Im just blown away by the prices of speakers/power supplies/streamers....maybe some majik components!!

This forum has given folks bang for buck solutions for years....got a bit of a fright TBH....

I can imagine that some of the price increase might be due to the shortage of chips available from China/Taiwan and with difficulties in transportation.

Linn have been in the Veblen goods category for some years now. They aim at the market where if it's inexpensive it can't be any good and certainly won't have any bragging rights.

Did have a listen to one of their systems a couple of years back, small active speakers with subs, very good integration. I was impressed, but the cartridge on the TT was either worn out or not set up properly as there was audible HF distortion. The dealer and the punters did not seem to notice.

I think the subs and speaker system was £10k. Although it was good it was totally demolished by the JBL 4365 at the same price. Not even close. Although you would need a separate amplifier for the JBLs.

Many years ago I listened to some Linn Isobarak speakers at a well known London audio emporium. I commented on the lack of image stability (that's putting it mildly - the image was drifting around all over the place!), to which the demonstrator simply replied "How do you know it's not meant to sound like that?" (implying the image 'swim' was intentional in the recording.) :doh:

Later visited the Linn room at the Swiss Cottage Audio Fair. This time the room was packed with Linn fans who were fawning over the Linn system including the Isobaraks, and again the sound they were making was all over the place. I walked out after minutes - it was all I could stand. :doh:
