We’re supposed to get heavy snow showers from about 3am in Mid-Suffolk, but I don’t think it’s supposed to get as far down as you - assuming someone’s told the snow that.

Terrible weather all last night, heavy rain and howling winds.

No weather at all now though, uniform grey sky, no rain, no wind, no nothing.

Long range forecast says it will be mild over Xmas so at least that's a positive.

Christmas is the same for you every year isn't it?

Macca

I have to travel and it's just more of a ball-ache if it's icy and/or snowing.

One Christmas eve back in the 90s got stuck at Crewe station, delays due to wrong type of snow, 2 hours for the next train. There's probably places that are more depressing at 7 o'clock at night on Xmas eve than Crew station but I'm not aware of them. It was properly seedy back then too.

Bitterly cold night, eventually they decided to put on a coach instead, adding another hour to the journey time. It was a right old banger with those bristly seats but my god we were glad to get on it and out of there.

struth

Pigmy Pony

Christmas is a time for family and friends to get together. But there is a reason you haven't seen them all year.

We don't get many visitors, we do most of the visiting. Which on the face of it looks the better option, as you can decide leaving time. But when I'm installed on me sofa with the remote I really can't be arsed. She even makes me change into something presentable.

Best time for me is the day after Boxing Day*, when all that nonsense is done, and I can finally get to play my new records :)

*Not Anita's favourite time, for the same reasons.

Torrential rain here. We've had a shit-ton of rain here for the last week.

Already starting here with the high winds, so you'll need to get your skates on. Or better still leave your journey till tomorrow. I'm supposed to be going over to Burnley today, which is grim even in good weather, so I've sacked it off. Bit of telly and record playing instead.

Wind mostly gone down now - for a while at least. The previous storm - Arwen - clearly had an impact - with a lot of noise and bits fell off trees. The most recent storm - Barra- doesn't seem to have had so much of an impact here - some more small bits have fallen off trees - but nothing huge. There has been snow on the hills/mountains - clearly visible in the day - though I can't see any right now - it's still dark.

Was concerned about our remaining petrol car - as it wasn't MOTd, but had been SORNed. Worry 1 - would it pass the MOT? Worry 2 - could it freeze up in the cold - would the anti-freeze be good enough and would the water for the screen wash freeze up.

Coldest day recently was a couple of days back.

Good news about the car - passed the MOT and I asked for the radiator fluid to be checked. According to the garage guy, it's good down to -40 degrees C - so I will worry less about that.

Noticed evidence of overnight frost yesterday - as some water in plant pots and plant pot stands had ice on the surface. Should be OK for the next week or two - as temperatures not supposed to drop too low - but then who believes weather forecasts anyway?

I stocked up on screen wash and de-icer yesterday.

Suggestion for EVs - put screen wash in at full concentration - as EVs don't generate so much heat as ICE cars - not really sure if that makes sense - but there could be something in that.

No it does make sense, in a petrol car the washer bottle lives in a toasty warm engine bay. My battery-powered tools don't do anything to keep my hands warm, so I wouldn't expect much from EVs either.

Sunny here right now, still a bit breezy though. Normal service will resume this afternoon with more heavy rain.

Good job too as the flood at the end of the street was looking a bit depleted last night.

Was looking at old maps and seems like both the original buildings in this area (the church and the manor house) had flood defences and moats. All the little houses were up the hill aways back then.

My battery-powered tools don't do anything to keep my hands warm, so I wouldn't expect much from EVs either.Sure, but if cars are left out at night it probably doesn't make any difference whether they get warmed up in the day by an engine or not. It probably does make sense to use a more concentrated screenwash in an EV, though some EVs will be used with the heatup feature in which the heating comes on before the car is driven away - usually when the car is connected to the charger.

Flood news: I think they must have dredged the drains or whatever they call it as despite it raining heavily day and night for the past week the flood is only small compared to previously.

based on prior performance it should be right across the road.

we're on the flat here so there's always drainage problems because the slope down to the river is very slight.

Why should Santa be a grumpy old git? He only works one night a year. OK, so he has to climb down sooty chimneys, or in the case of blocks of flats, down the waste disposal chutes, but otherwise it's not too bad. Just think of all those glasses of sherry left out for him - and the mince pies. :)

It's the "Advent diet" he has to undertake each year (so he can fit down the chimneys) that make him grumpy. I know I'm a miserable shoite when I'm hungry.

I know this to be true, because when I took my kids to see him at Woolworths many years ago, he was looking very thin.

Was -2 or -3 C this morning here, and the cars are still frozen up. Definitely cooler than a day or two back. Still the days will start to get longer very soon.

Projected to stay either at or around freezing, or alternatively rain up to New Year and slightly beyond.

Very hard frost overnight which made it look as Christmassy as it can be without actually snowing. Was lovely and sunny when I went to collect the turkey and other meat from the butchers and brave Tesco for the bits that were missing from the delivery yesterday... it’s now grey and murky again, 2c, and my wallet is £350 pounds lighter... but I did get some nice bottles of wine for Christmas Day. :)

Not really sure what the weather was like today, some wet stuff I think, but wife and kids went for a pizza and then to the pantomime with a bunch of other friends and lucky me (yes, lucky me!) got to stay home and look after the dog.

Had a big list of jobs I was going to do but then decided if they’re all out having fun, “sod it, I’m having an afternoon off” - watched a movie, played the new Forza Horizon game on the Xbox then stuck a pizza in the oven and opened a bottle of Rioja. Best afternoon I’ve had all year! :)

Similar here, typical Christmas weather, not much of anything.

Weather actually looks how I feel - went on a Christmas do last night, had 6 small bottles of Peroni, and woke up this morning with a hangover :( I'm such a lightweight! Or maybe it's because of the extra portion of chocolate fudge cake I scrounged from a woman sat across from me.

Either way it's messed with my toilet routine, which is now an hour past its due date. I shall of course keep you updated.

Supposed to be warming up today, but I suspect still around zero - with frost on the ground. It's suppose to get warmer and wetter fairly soon. Yesterday was cold with a lot of ice and it didn't shift all day. Inadvertently spent a fortune (well several ££s) trying to keep the heating on in cars (EVs) so as to defrost the windows and windscreen. Such very cold weather is not good for EVs - though I suspect it's not good for petrol/diesel cars either, except that most people don't notice the extra costs due to more fuel being used. Also heat is mostly an unwanted by product in a petrol/diesel car, so it's helpful in winter, whereas EVs are more efficient, so heating requires extra energy input.

I remember old cars in the winter, five or six packed in shivering waiting ten minutes for the heater to warm up enough to start clearing the fog on the windows. And another ten minutes before it actually cleared enough to be able to see out enough to drive anywhere.
