I'd love to make it illegal to lie, prevaricate, obfuscate, exaggerate or mislead in any way.

Can you imagine how our politicians and public bodies would cope with that? And advertisers and manufacturers would have to do a major rethink with hype and fancy terms being banned.

For instance, does the average female shopper actually know why 'Ginkgo Biloba' is a good thing in cosmetics and shampoos? Of course not, it's misleading hype.

And when it comes to cars and fuels, well there's a whole quagmire of advertising tripe!

You could spend a lifetime digging out all the dishonesty.

I can't see a real downside to the truth though :).

I can't think of any situation where I'd want to be lied to.

Holland & Barrett is full of stuff like that - expensive extracts and oils etc., which probably do very little good and possibly, if used too much, will do harm.

i had an asda steak n wine pie the other day and couldnt eat it.. pastry was crap and the so called steak and wine filling was a black mess. not even mince. it was a pack of 2 as well.. into the bucket.:doh:

Damn, I didn't think to try the box, and it's in the bin now. I did finish the mince pie, but with a scowl on my face. Will go back to Waitrose's Heston pies like last year. They were pretty good, if a bit weird tasting.

I don't advocate lying, and as was said earlier in the thread many politicians, scientists, religious leaders etc all pedal either lies or their version of the truth because in reality most people don't really want truth unless it pleases them to hear it.

When I read the opening words of your post (Operation Mincemeat), I thought you were still talking about pies, so the rest of the post made no sense. Had to read it through a couple of times :)

I can see the value of misinformation (lies) in war strategy, but I feel it has no place on a personal level, certainly not when it comes to important stuff, like pies. If the illustration on the packaging of your Asda steak pie (or my Asda mince pies) had more accurately depicted the contents, we could make an informed decision.

No, I don't believe folk want to hear the awful truth, but the truth is, that the truth, no matter how awful, is the truth. Then you know what you're dealing with. Actually this may not be the truth, just my honest opinion :)

some lies are justified, but most are not. like most things in life there is no complete black and white; there is a biggish shade of grey in middle.. the question you have to ask yourself is, do you feel lucky is it warranted to tell this fib to perhaps save someones feelings etc.

kindness means you occasionally have to do things you wouldn't normally. been there, done that. there is an overriding sense of morals that means being overly honest isnt right thing to do. hopefully most wont have to go there.

sometimes you do what you have to do in that huge greyscale bit in middle, and then hope youve done it right. sometimes you dont, but at least you tried.

Well my shampoo (Vosene) makes me look like I've just walked out of a salon halfway through my haircut, so I'm not the best person to pass judgement on that. But as for advertising generally, they could do worse than use the film "Crazy People" with Dudley Moore and Daryl Hannah as a template.

And why does everything in the news have to be sensationalised or alarmist, with even the most mundane of things being thrust at us as major events. That is bending of truth. The significance of everyday matters being constantly inflated.
