Are they digital tape machines? If so, how noisy are they?

I only ask as Decca used something similar in the 80's and they were so noisy they had the transports sat in solid wooden boxes out in the corridors by each mastering room entrance..

Is Lodgesound anything to do with "The Lodge" studios, once in Northampton (and home to The Enid for a good few years)?

Hi there;

They are actually C Format video tape machines - I know of the machines that Decca had though - they were based on IVC alpha-wrap tape transports with custom built outboard electronics made by Decca themselves - check out Gino Mancini's website - he actually has one of them.

I'm not anything to do with "The Lodge" studios unfortunately but do have a niche operation transferring all things analogue to digital (and vice-versa). Surprising how many folk want that authentic analogue tape sound these days..

In answer to your question regarding noise they are astoundingly quiet for the amount that is running inside them - they have stereo analogue sound with Dolby SR noise reduction.

Wow, i have never seen anything like those decks :)

Having mentioned that though it reminds me that before CD recorders became available I was always recording using a HiFi stereo VHS recorder. With a 20Hz - 20Khz response & 90Db+ signal to noise ratio the recordings were every bit as good as red book CD ;) 3 hours of music on one tape or 6 if run at lower speed, it honestly made me wonder why no-one else i knew didn't try the same trick :eyebrows:

I have never met anyone else that used one for this purpose either :scratch:

Picture-wise I use Sony BVM 2015's and sound-wise I have 2 pairs of Rogers/BBC LS 5/8's....
