Well, not sure if this will work, but let's give it a go...

Chris (The Grand Wazoo) was posting about 'Sunday at Devil Dirt' the album by Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - and like a lot of artists, it occurred to me that that there are lots of links between both these artists and others - so, the idea of this thread is to follow the previous post with another track, artist or album, with some sort of link (let's see how spurious they get!) - and explain why. Could be a "proper" link like X used to be in Y or something a bit more oblique.

So, if we start with Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan, we could go lots of directions, and I was going to go for one of my favourite (top 25 I reckon) chillout bands, Kinobe, and their 2004 album, Wide Open - Isobel sang vocals on a couple of tracks. But that's probably a bit mean for a first go! ;)

Now, I can't be sure, but I suspect a lot of his bridges spanned expanses of rivers and such like, and given the area that he was working in, some of this territory could well have been in dispute, with local factions fighting over it. The 'Bosstone Sound' was an idea dreamt up by a record industry that wanted an East Coast alternative to the 'San Francisco Sound' (i.e. The Grateful Dead, Moby Grape etc). So in 1968 they rounded up a few garage bands in the Boston area & gave them recording contracts.
The hippies didn't fall for that shit coming from the man! That's why you've never heard of this band....

The “Bosstown Sound” was started as a publicity campaign by producer Alan Lorber, aiming to market the various Boston based psychedelic bands on MGM’s books (The Ultimate Spinach, Eden’s Children etc) as being part of one singular movement. The idea was to rival the burgeoning San Francisco scene as well as the Mersey-Beat sound that was being imported from across the Atlantic. Unfortunately the rock critics and the underground took umbrage at what they deemed was a shallow corporate attempt at selling the counter-culture back to them as a package.


Ultimate Spinach was a psychedelic/hard rock/blues band originally from Boston. In their '60's heyday they specialized in lengthy songs such as "Ballad of the Hip Death Goddess", from Ultimate Spinach (1968) and "Genesis of Beauty", from Behold And See (1968). Since 1970 the band have largely abandoned the psychedelic sounds and have (since at least 1975) dropped all of the '60's songs from their setlists (with the exception of 'Ballad Of The Hip Death Goddess' and a few from the third album).
