Is there anyone here using Odyssey amps. I am considering a Stratos power amp. The only thing putting me off is that they a factory direct. There isn't a UK distributor or stockist. They seem to be a lot of amp for the money.

Steve, a word from the wise.

Just get yourself a Neurochrome 286 or 686, there have been a couple of 686 builds on the forums recently.
End game amplification mate.

Based on what ???
Just saying; and in my opinion it can be seen as unprofesional to make sweeping statements like that on an audio forum, unless of course you have extensive knowledge and experience of every Amplifier out there, if on the other hand, it is your opinion, then its always better to state that.

I don't want to get into the build thing Alan. I can only find info about the amp modules online.

Hi Anthony, hope you are well there.

Good point about a 'sweeping statement', the fact that it was has me thinking people might realise I have heard a few amps in my time.
It's not one I have any professional involvement in, in fact I shelled out my own wonga to buy one.

IME it is the most transparent amplifier out there, having heard/borrowed/designed a lot of different ones/types.
Without getting into published figures 'it does what it says on the tin' to borrow an advertising phrase.

That's my opinion, but I certainly haven't heard every amplifier in the world, or am ever likely to, particularly ones that have telephone number pricing.

Am l right in thinking that the Neurochrome is a chip amp, using the chips like in my LM3886 Gainclone but in multiples for more power?

Yes but they are more sophisticated than that. The units incorporate distortion cancellation, that's what gives such stellar performance.

Fair enough, And i am fine, thanks Alan.:)

Was it the Neurochrome 686 that I heard at yours a few days ago Alan? If it was then all I can say is that in your set up driving the Quad statics it was certainly impressive, very open, great depth and sound stage, I was surprised by the bass depth from the Quads and the control. Very similar I would say to my Krell KSA-80 but I am sure there are subtle differences. would be interesting to do a side by side comparison.

Alternatively I think Steve would not go far wrong with one of these or even one of these if in good condition:-

Much as I like Krells I think I'd still go with the Neurochrome if starting from scratch. Interesting that the seller says the KSA100 was not designed by D'Augustino 'Unlike more recent ones'. He's got that arse about face.

Hi Martin, I think you mis-read what he said "VERY MUSICAL, WITH SOME WARMTH AND LIQUIDITY LIKE A VALVE AMLIFIER, UNLIKE MORE RECENT KRELLS NOT DESIGNED BY DAN D'AGOSTINO" He's saying the more recent ones are not designed by Dan.

Very similar to the Audiolab 8300XP I’m running, same Sanken output transistors, similar looking power supply. Might be worth getting a listen to one of those Steve. Certainly more readily available with good service back up. I think they’re a great amp, especially for the price.

5 things would put me off
1] shipping costs
2] sending it back if it needs repair under warrenty
3] having to pay VAT on top
4] resale value will be very poor offsetting any savings
5 ] why buy something unknown when so many decent amps in UK such as colin wonfer and joe henry amps etc etc

Joe who? never heard of him. However, thank you for pointing out all the negatives about the Odyssey. How did it sound to you? What was the build quality like? How old was the one you heard? Was it in good working order?

Not sure what provoked that response from you, Alan has responded to my post, and i am sure he understood where i was coming from, nothing i said there undermined Alans capabilities as an engineer...
