Just a couple of quick questions, does anyone have a ballpark type guess at when some of these will be ready to go again? (if at all) And how bad is the arm without it? I'm in need of an arm now. Don't suppose anyone has a spare :(

I have commissioned another batch of collars, to coincide with my return to the UK in mid-late October. There will be both natural silver and black anodised versions, as before. Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but should be little different from last time.

For anyone interested, please wait until I confirm that they are ready. It's a bit difficult to keep track of expressions of interest from Camp Bastion (we have other things to deal with at the moment).

Hugo,

Yes, it will fit the LP12, but do bear in mind that it's 5mm taller than the standard Jelco collar (the mounting hole and bolt holes are exactly the same as the standard collar). So, you do need to make sure that there's at least 5mm of clearance between the top of the standard collar, and the bottom of the armreast plate; otherwise you may find that the arm does not go low enough when my collar is fitted. I somehow doubt that's an issue with the LP12, though, since its platter is reasonably tall.

Yup ditto me too, I'm wanting one of these in silver for my Gyro s.e./Jelco 750d combo. Seems a given to have one of these TBH Shuggie my man, so I'd like to be in the queue as a deffo if any are still available from this October consignment. I'll drop you a pm around the middle of next week as I believe you are back soon.

When my arm & new armboard landed here in August, I had to to resort to a little bodgery on the day, as the supplied 25mill. M4 bolts were too short as the Michell armboard comes in at 20m.m. I can hardly whinge at Jelco for this as most armboards aren't this thick. All I could find locally on the day were some 45m.m. pan head machine screws which work well with the standard collar & I meant to trim them down....when I could be arsed.:) You know how it is Guys, playing music always wins.:smoking:

My one concern is that these may not be a great fit on the new collar, as on the Shuggie collar it looks like the bolt holes are recessed to accept hex head M4 bolts. In the case of getting the new collar I'd really like to be good to go on the day it lands, so if anyone knows whether the supplied bolts are going to be long enough that'd be great, as would anyone who can tell me what precise length/spec I need. I'm guessing 35/38mill sounds abooot reeet. Any links to some suitable/tasty hardware would be great, as other than the usual DIY superstores I have little clue where to start.

I've also just added the Michell armboard de-coupling kit at the same time as I ordered my new armboard.(not doing this would have seemed a missed opportunity) I can't really say how worthwhile this has been, as this was added same day as the arm + my new arm cable & the Oyaide mat only the day before. All I can honestly say is that overall the improvements have been v large over my previous Technoarm & Gyro sans Oyaide mat, & that overall I'm a v happy bunny.

I have though got a decent selection of O' rings & wondered whether using some suitably sized ones when mounting the new collar is likely to have any small benefit?

vacdac ooooooooot.

Many thx.

The bolts that I supply with the collar are 25mm, so you would need something longer. They are M4 cap head stainless steel bolts, available from a number of sellers on a well known internet auction site, but it may be better value for me to simply get you a set of 40mm bolts from my local supplier (AHC in Farnham).

Thanks Hugo,

Wow that sounds excellent re the bolts, & I really wasn't expecting such a speedy response. I'll be good to go re payment once you have had a chance to settle back in on your return, is direct bank transfer ok? as I don't have paypal set up.

I've just had to tweak my AT33EV/Sumiko headshell today, to get the Azimuth right & although it seems right at two points on an l.p. The fact is I'm likely to be a frequent cart swapper, as I already have another couple of other l.o.m.c. carts ready set up + one awaiting a re-tip & v likely these will be added to in the not so distant. The hit & miss aspect of how the arm pillar can be out of true each & every time you adjust for vta does seem bonkers in what otherwise seems a really nicely engineered product.

I'll pm you once you have posted that you are back & good to go re orders/shipping, but it's a firm yes please from me.

Update: I am now on my way home from my travels 'abroad', so I shall shorty be able to collect the collars from the fabricator, then they have to go off for finishing and anodising. With luck, the collars should be ready, in both natural alloy and black finishes, in a couple of weeks.

Hi Suggie
Not sure if my answer has reached you yesterday. Arm cable plug is not a problem since I have a 750E with a new cable/no plug. Could you send me some specs/pricing? In general I would be very interested in your collar so you might put me on your list.

Jo

In short, the specs are pretty much the same as the standard collar, except for the upper and lower portions being 5mm longer in each direction to give additional support. The collar's radius is 1mm larger than the original (purely to allow for nice recessed cap head bolts). It fits the same armboard hole as the original; also the bolt hole positions are identical. The arm pillar hole is accurately machined to 18mm, but without a cut-out to one side - that tuned out to be unnecessary when the pillar is held securely over a greater part of its length. The M6 setting screw is much bigger than the original and is positioned so that it does not push the arm pillar over like the original collar does so easily. I also supply a small nylon bush that can be inserted, simply to protect the soft Jelco arm pillar from the M6 setting screw.

Mounting bolts supplied are 25mm long M4 in stainless steel. If you need different lengths, I can get whatever is needed from my local supplier for the same price.

Although I have not yet been billed for the machining, I expect the collars to go out at £44 for the UK; £46 for Europe and £47 for the rest of the world. Russian customers may wish to pay extra for UPS/DHL etc if the performance of the Russian Post Office was anything to go by last time!

They will be available in both natural alloy and black anodised finishes.

Perfect. So please put me on the list for a natural alloy finish. I assume that fits best to the gray 401 deck and the original gray Jelco collar/arm base. Mounting bolts maybe a bit longer (40mm) since the original 25mm bolts just fit in my deck. However I assume we can discuss that later.
Again thanks a lot and I am looking forward to equip my Deck/Arm with your collar

I use one of these collars on my Heybrook TT2 which is very similar to an early LP12 and there are no issues.

Mine arrived at work this morning.
Very happy with them, well made, well engineered and well finished - can't ask for more really :)

The collars have a diameter of circa 58mm, the hole in the armboard I have (from sound supports) is 56mm, so a bit of work with a flap wheel in the cutout of the armboard tomorrow will have it all ship shape.

This is not a criticism of either component - it is just a fact of life - I want the collar to sit flat on the board - not 3mm above it on a tiny bit of circumferential 1mm either side of aluminium.

I am happy to say that both of the items I have are exceptionally well designed and made

I wonder if Sound Supports would modify their Jelco armboard design a touch, to accommodate my collar as well as the standard one, if I asked nicely? It's worth an e-mail!

Hi Shuggie,
Your collar is the 'mutts nutts' so dont go messing with that!
The SS armboard has enough room to accept modification ''just'', but while it will be tight - it will look good and that it was designed that way :)
I'll post some pics when I've sorted mine.

Ammonite Audio
05-11-2012, 18:08
Thanks for your kind comments - the collar's increased overall diameter was one of those little design changes necessary to accommodate some really nice cap head bolts, which do look nice when the collar is fitted. The SS armboard is the only one that requires any modification before my collar will fit.

As promised, some pics of the finished item, well, nearly finished :)
Please excuse the mobile telephone images - camera is at home.

First dismantled the Sound Supports armboards - they are two pieces held together with some nifty captive nuts and stainless socket round head screws.
The top part of the plate is where the hole needs to be enlarged. A 60mm 'FLAP Wheel' was called into service. Not particularly difficult, and reasonably easy to keep central, which IS important.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a221/sph2701/SoundSupportsJelcoarmplate.jpg

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a221/sph2701/Dismantled.jpg

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a221/sph2701/FlapWheel.jpg

Made myself a jig to hold both the parts while I re-linnished them by hand with 800grit w&d paper. This is because I want a finer linnish than supplied and I'm also going to have them anodised black.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a221/sph2701/subplate.jpg

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a221/sph2701/topplatelinnish.jpg

Put them back together, carefully put everything into place and there you have it - they do fit - albeit with less than .5mm to spare!

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a221/sph2701/Collarplate.jpg

If Sound Supports would care to adjust the size of the mounting ring and move their three bolt holes out by 1 - 2mm then everything would be dandy. My guess is this would be easy to achieve as it "looks" to me like the items are made on a C/A turret punch, so just a few numbers need changing.

I'm happy with my results so far :)

As an 'aside' getting to the locking screw is still possible - just! you would not want the collar any lower or the top plate any thicker.

Thats interesting news :)

Great if you want to remain silver - difficult to turn that black though which I actually needed in this instance. I will run with that one next time around as a silver will be needed for that one.

Next up is that debate over arm position and setup - but thats another thread I think.

Great if you want to remain silver - difficult to turn that black though which I actually needed in this instance.
The same seller does black anodised aluminium too.
Most important thing is that the measurements are correct and the Shuggie collar fits.

The inox board is very heavy and doesn't seem to resonate.
I don't know if it has a sonic benefit over the aluminium ones.
It is howerver heavier and as rigid as it gets.

I'm pretty sure that a shop that does car body work would be able to paint the inox black.

Thanks Hugo, I received my collars today. Didn't take long all the way to Tokyo! The first one was immediately installed on the SP10, Jelco SA-750lb 12" with the Ortofon SPU Royal GM mkII. the benefit of the collar with the SPU is that you can't really easily set azimuth on the SPU as there is no flat surface on the headshell so you are relying on the arm itself being right relative to the armboard. Your collar fixes the gross variability in azimuth the original Jelco collar can introduce. It's just better.

Nicely finished quality pieces too. I'm very pleased. More pics to come over time as the rest of the collars find their homes on various decks with Jelco and Ortofon tonearms.

Cheers
Carl.

There is another batch in the pipeline, available towards the end of May. I'm experimenting with a grey finish to better match the SA-750 tonearms, so if that turns out to be successful, there will be three colour choices.

I found this thread interesting...not because I have a Jelco, but because the problem with inadequate support around the collar seems all too common. Even highly costly arms such as the Triplanar and Graham are fixed with just a screw forcing the superstructure of the arm against the column. Potential azimuth issues are only one problem with these designs. It just is not a decent engineering solution to 'lock' the arm with only a screw, the surface area is too small.
This is one of the areas where SME show their design superiority. Their arms include a properly engineered clamp so that the whole column is firmly grasped.

But when properly implemented, that is a perfectly good way of securing the arm pillar in an accurate and consistent manner. Take a look at a Linn Ittok/Ekos mounting collar and you'll see what I mean.

Do you mean the diameter of the arm pillar, or of the hole required in the armboard for the collar? The answers are 18mm and 30mm respectively.

The overall diameter of the standard Jelco arm collar is 56mm; my custom collar's diameter is 58mm.

Does that cover what you wanted?

I now have a new batch of collars ready. The main change is that they are now available in black, silver, or grey finishes:

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s301/hugocass/Jelco%20Collar/IMGP1201_zps46dfb5ac.jpg

The grey finish is a nice match for the grey SA-750 tonearms:

The cost has had to go up, reflecting the postal price increases that came into effect on 1 Apr (April Fool's Day?). Prices, including insured postage, are now £45 for the UK, £47 for Europe and £48 for the rest of the World.

The collars will also be available from David Brook at MCRU.

Folks, I thought I would post some images and give some feedback on this marvelous item. So firstly many thanks to Hugo who was a pleaseure to deal with. I received the item the next day, special delivery all included in the windscreen price, this is what you get:

The item is thoroughly packed in cardboard box and bubble wrap.

You get extensive fitting instructions and bolts, nuts, spring washers, allen key and small nylon arm pillar protector which I think is a nice option.

I can't wait to fit it..........

........all I need now is a 750 to fit to it:doh:

Hugo, hope you don't mind me doing this, cheers and many thanks.

Hi Shuggie,

I am doing some upgrades on my Thorens TD 320 TT (new Lyra Delos PU in place and a Oyaide tonearm cable on it's way) and wonder if should get one of your collars instead of the original, which is kind of "wobbly".
Do you think it will fit on my TT and is it easy to replace the old one?

http://1drv.ms/1ohGNVI
(See: http://1drv.ms/1ohGNVI)

BTW, my tonearm is AudioQuest PT-6 (Jelco SA-250ST), not SA 750. Will the collar still fit?

Regards,
Dag

Hi Dag

Your edit crossed paths with my PM to you! Ignore what I wrote about the correct mounting distance - it's 211mm for a PT-6 (not 214mm, which applies to the Jelco SA-250 and SA-750D).

Yes, the collar will fit, since the Audioquest has the same 18mm diameter pillar as most Jelcos.

Anyway, you will definitely benefit from a better mounting collar, but you may have to get a new armboard; or at least modify the existing one, since the collar fixings are clearly different, but you might be lucky and find that the opening for the PT-6 collar is the same as for a Jelco. A new armboard would probably be the easier option, particularly if you are handy with metalwork .

My collar is exactly the same for fitting as a Jelco original, so you would only need to get (or make) an Jelco-compatible armboard with the correct size hole, placed to ensure the correct spindle-pivot distance (211mm for a the PT-6). You can download a Jelco mounting template from Vinyl Engine (go to the Tonearm Database). So, apart from potentially modifying or replacing the armboard, yes it is easy; and handling/adjusting the tonearm would be much easier with a decent collar. The nylon stub provided with my collars will also prevent the grub screw damage that can be seen in your photo

I do have just a few of the B-Stock black collars left, priced at £28 + £10 postage to Norway. You can have one of those straight away, or wait for the new (even more improved) version of the collar which will be available in grey. The new ones will be more expensive and I can't yet tell you when they will be available.

I hope that helps

Hugo

Shuggie,

Do you have any more "scratch and dent" collars available? I'm in the US (Wisconsin). I tried to send you a PM, but wasn't allowed to for some reason. Please PM me and let me know, along with what you have and the price.

Thanks!

Tom - you have to rack up 5 posts before the forum allows you to send PMs.

All the B-Stock collars are sold now. I expect to receive the new 'even more improved' version of the custom Jelco collar in 3-4 weeks, and there should be plenty available. I'll post details and pictures here as soon as I receive the finished samples. They will be available in black and grey finishes.

I am also introducing a 10mm spacer ring for those Jelco users who need to raise the arm up, to match really tall platters (eg stacked platter Lencos). This spacer ring is fully compatible with the standard Jelco collar as well as my 'even more improved' custom version.

Thanks, Shuggie. I'll have or get my post count up. The only way I even found out about this forum (I'm active on AK and others) is because I was searching for your collars. How will I know when the new collar is available? Will you post the announcement up in this thread?

I was expecting some finished samples in the post today from the anodising people, in order to confirm that they can go ahead with finishing the whole batch, but they did not arrive. So, it does not look like they will be available this week. But all being well, I should have them next week.

Slight problem there - demand for the silver collars was pretty non-existent against grey and black, so now I don't do silver at all. What arm do you want it for?

PeteM

Sorry, I did see that in the thread. I guess old age is creeping up quicker than I thought!
It's going on what I thought was a silver 750L, which having looked again now seems more grey than silver!
So a grey one if possible. Should add that I haven't actually bought the arm yet, so I'm going from pictures.

Cheers,
Pete

Apologies to those waiting for the new Jelco collars - because of a little problem with poor packaging and transit damage, most of the first run of collars were unusable; and there is still a bit of a delay before I get a replacement run of the new collars from the fabricator. With luck it will not be too long now (I've been promised them in the next week or so).

I've put details and some pictures of the new collars up on my website http://ammonite-acoustics.co.uk/home/ammonite-audio/ . The matching spacer ring, designed to raise any Jelco arm up by 10mm (or multiples of 10mm if more than one ring is used) is available now, in both grey and black. These can be seen on the website too.

Good News! My Mk2 improved Jelco collars are now available, in both grey and black anodised finishes. I'm very impressed with the fantastic standard of finish that the fabricators and anodisers have achieved.

The webshop is not quite ready, so you can't yet buy directly from the website, but you can see the collars and the matching 10mm spacer rings here (http://ammonite-acoustics.co.uk/home/shop/). Please e-mail if you wish to buy or for any further information (e-mail address is on the shop page)

My webshop (http://ammonite-acoustics.co.uk/home/shop/)is working properly now, after a few teething problems. I've added options for selecting different mounting bolt lengths; also some special discount offers for buying a collar and one or more spacers together.

Apologies for any confusion resulting from the earlier webshop problems.

I have a few 'slight seconds' collars available at reduced prices. These have tiny cosmetic flaws which are difficult to see and are unlikely to be noticed when the collars are mounted. Details are here (http://ammonite-acoustics.co.uk/home/shop/)
