I'm looking for an entry level amp, preferably powered by the 2A3 valve, or, failing that, a 300B.
Thanks!

Thank you. I think it would have done as a "dip your toe" machine. Unfortunately it's collect only, and I'm an eight hour drive away!

Neil, I have an Audion Silver Night 300B power amp (with volume control so can be used as a single-input integrated), 9/10 condition, but I'd want £1000 for it, so probably not a "dip your toe" machine.

Looks like this

I have stared at this quite a lot. It's British made and presumably has decent transformers. The problem is that the shop doesn't have a circuit diagram or manual, and can't tell me anything about it, and can't explain why the wiring underneath looks so untidy compared to the one reviewed on Hifi Wigwam. Is it auto-bias, for instance? I think the man who ran Musicarch is retired. Valve amps are the sort of thing, given the voltages inside, one wants to be sure of!

I can't comment on this amp and brand in particular, but there have been examples of certain makers using higher spec and even totally different circuits in their demo/review equipment than in their retail models. There's one rather infamous example of a well known brand I won't go into.

There may also be different versions around for different budgets, especially for bespoke/hand made to order gear.

The thing that would most put me off in this case is that cheap looking potentiometer, compare it to the one in the Wam review model.

I've had a close look at the wiring and components. I'm sure it is auto bias with the cathode resistors/capacitors in the bottom left corner of the photo.

Admittedly the wiring looks untidy but sometimes if wiring is neatly bundled in a loom it can affect performance.
Attention has been paid to insulation of the high voltage wiring.

Replacing the potentiometer is an easy job, I would recommend putting a switched attenuator in for better sound.

I bought the jsoundlab 300b amp.

First impressions, it sounds very good with my JBL L96 which i couldn't bare to sell in the end.

Darn pretty little thing as well.

Heck, i haven't even listened to the ladyday+ 300B monos i recently picked up.
All getting a bit obsessive possibly.

The seller turned out to be a pleasure to meet.

Yep.
Looking forward to hearing them one day, house refurb permitting.
No doubt something has to go though.

Agreed, the name's not a selling point.
