Just been messing with my TD-160. It’s now mounted in a Russ Collinson plinth, black Perspex top and an RB2000 tonearm. It’s a none bounce mod so it doesn’t jump around a lot, I prefer it. Just got some finishing off to do then I can put it through it’s paces!!

First Play tonight, very pleased with the power behind the music, it seems more rich across the board compared to my LPT/ RB250 set up. Same cartridge at the moment VM-750SH.

Think I need to change the colour of the white part of the plinth?

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkNo I like the contrast of the black perspex and white plinth. Is the plinth glossy piano white? If not then that's the only thing I'd do.

I'm kind of curious, doesn't it defeat the purpose of owning a Thorens TD160 if you don't use the integrated suspension?
As far as esthetics, the silver tonearm and plater looks good against a gloss black deck.
BTW, is that a Thorens paper sticker labeling your deck?

It will be piano gloss when I get round to polishing it!! Just got a bit giddy when I put it together.

I’m not very good with bouncy decks, it does have a bit of bounce, I just doubled the springs and because of the top they needed to be compressed more. The Thorens badge is CNC cut out black plastic with a brushed aluminium skin.

It sounds very good put damping material on the sub frame. It runs quietly and the RB2000 is a seriously good arm. Going to try my uni pivot on it, just as a comparison.

Looks lovely. I imagine it will be a proper dust magnet though!

Looking good Mike, I must pop over for another listen... I know this might be a stupid question, but why two turntables? Do they favour different types of music? Or is one set up to play 78s :D

Just vanilla but I bought this the other day. I've only had the stock arm in the past so I'm looking forward to hearing it with an SME.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210917/4797f396871a1ed1d2cf54ba121eeb46.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210917/e525762c96058bd2b75096a395baf188.jpg

No mate both 33 / 45 but different arms and carts, plus i built the 2nd one out of parts i had kicking around i thought it was a waste not to use them.

Most impressive - I could probably use the parts I have kicking around to build a radio that doesn't work

Lovely TT’s. TD150 is still my favourite. I just like messing about and they’re great for that. I thought the RB2000 might be a bit too much, but it sounds wonderful.

I've got an original one owner unmolested 160B ii and SME iii. It's rather nice IMHO but one thing that concerns me what happens if the motor fails? Is there a supply of new motors or can they be repaired?

The motors are just about bomb proof and usually a noisy motor can be rectified with a thrust bearing kit, the only thing that can't be easily fixed is a bent spindle, newer TD160's have a post that prevents you catching the spindle when you need to take the platter off and helps to stop you causing any damage. Regarding modern replacements, I don't think there is anyone making a drop in replacement motor and the originals have long since gone out of production, i have seen people modify the Premotec motors that go in Linn LP12's and Rega Planars and they seem to be the most obvious choice as a replacement.
