Greetings to all, from "across the pond". My name is John, in Louisville. I still enjoy Sir Thomas Beecham, Sir Adrian Boult and other, English conductors. My system is pretty simple - an old turntable, a Dynaco PAS-4 pre-amp, a cassette deck ... two open-reel decks (including a ReVox) and a phono pre-amp. I've been dubbing LPs, cassettes, open-reels for a few decades, onto CDs, including using a de-click/de-pop software (DartPro). All of the topics look interesting, but right now, am trying to find a simple pre-amp, to patch the Rogers phono pre-amp INTO. ... Finally, am one of the moderators, and the owner, of an internet site - bjorling2, in groups io, which is devoted to the legacy of the late, great Swedish tenor - Jussi Bjorling. Is anyone, over there, interested i Bjorling, even 6 decades after his early death? ... Thanks!

I am indeed interested in Jussi Björling. I'm not sure if I've still got the 78s of Bizet's Flower song - amongst other things. Some 78s got lost due to house moves and other people etc., but I still have some of the ones my dad bought. Sometimes I think that the original 78s still sound better than any transcriptions, though there may be some good ones which retain the good qualities of the 78s but avoid the problems which generally appear on 78s.

I'd be interested to know more about your work on Björling. Incidentally I think the best way to recover 78s is to use a stereo cartridge with a 78 stylus, and then it's possible to optimise the noise reduction on the mono (L+R) channel. I knew people who had done this many years ago, and they reported very good results. If there's significant energy in the L-R derived channel, then a 1 millisecond (approx) sample and hold can be used on the mono channel and it's apparently almost imperceptible in the output. It is possible to do this with analogue circuits, though nowadays it makes sense for most people to use digital signal processing.

It might also be possible to use linear processing to get a slight improvement, but non-linear processing seems to be the most promising.

I have heard of Björling, but do not have any of his output. Sadly it's not a music genre that appeals to me, but it's always good to hear from enthusiasts who have set up their own web-sites dedicated to their favourite Performers. Well done! :)

I wouldn't like to advise on the transcription of 78s to alternative storage media, save to say that in the mid '70s I did transfer many of my parent's 78s to cassette tape using a mono cartridge (crystal) fitted with a 78 stylus. Today I would use a modern fixed-coil cartridge fitted with an appropriate stylus, preferably running into a preamp having a range of equalisation options. Regarding the latter, there are a very few modern preamps which offer this facility, but their names escape me at the moment.
