Hello from not so sunny Plymouth

Hello everyone, Technically, I'm not a new member, but it's been so long since I've been on here that I've had to re-register, etc. Nice to be back though. My system is forty odd years old. I have a Pioneer PL112D record deck with a Shure M75MG cartridge. I have a pair of Celestion Ditton 15 speakers and a Rotel RX202 Mk.2 amp. The amp has recently died but my son has lent me his Onkyo A9030 amplifier. God, it sounds sweet. Should I scrap the old system and buy something more up to date ?? It would be hard to get rid of the old stuff which I bought new all those years ago.

There's nothing wrong with the equipment you're using, but upgrades are always possible. It just depends on your expectations.

Anyway, just join in and get chatting, I'm sure you'll get some useful opinions.

Welcome Roy, as Geoff says your gear isnt in any way poor; it obviously can be improved on but its all about bang for buck. Think what you have will make a very decent sound. If vinyl is your medium then maybe look to upgrade the cartridge or phono stage; they often give instant improvements

As both Geoff and Grant have said, your turntable, arm and cartridge were all very respectable in its day, and there need not be any overriding reason to change any of it. However Shure now no longer manufacture either cartridges or stylii; although replacement stylii for the M75 are readily available from third party sources. I would suggest, however, you look at the fixed-coil cartridge designs made by Ortofon and Audio Technica.

The Celestion Ditton 15s were also a respectable design, but small speaker design has improved quite considerably since then. I wouldn't want to suggest an alternative; I'm afraid others will have to advise you there, and for you to listen to some recent designs.

But see to the front end first, especially the cartridge.
