The Progmeister is pleased to announce that NEBO 11 will take place on Saturday 6th November 11am – 22:30pm. Usual format with the emphasis on enjoying the day, music, drink, Hi-Fi and mirth. Our host for our first post lock down event is Ian Humberston whom I have known for a long time. The room is at the rear of the Nursery with bar facility and toilets all on one level. Loading and unloading should be much easier than the last venue. I will of course keep you updated through the NEBO Facebook page and of course the usual online forums. Please feel free to network the event and to keep me updated as to what equipment you would like to bring. There are numerous B&B’s/hotels within a mile radius for those travelling from afar and Ian has informed me that he is happy for folks to leave equipment overnight to be collected the next morning should they wish to. See you down there!

It is a little bit more built up there Alan so that may prove a bit of a problem. The Marina isn't far away though and as long as you don't park on the actual marina car park you should be ok. It may be worth doing some googling. I will make some enquiries locally.

Top banana Steve. Accommodation booked for Saturday night. Got a three bedroom house all to myself for £79 for the night. Bargain!

Alan, you two are welcome to a room if you like, or it says there is private parking. It's only a few minutes' walk from the venue. Let me know and I'll PM a link.

Another spare room for anyone else who needs one.

If your all OK i'll bring my now battered looking red semi open baffles, I think the last time I came up I brought some large white baffles, these red ones are my best yet.. well I think so !
Driving them will be a short path ac/p from the late 20s driving a mofo output stage. Very simple amp that sounds really special.
I'll also bring along either a 2.5w globe px4 amp, or more likely, a 1w p650 based amp, I'm assuming the room is much smaller than owston ?

That's a possible, and if on the day it hasn't gone to someone more deserving, I'll speak to Ali. Again, not an issue for me, I have in the past slept in some unlikely places, including (but not limited to) someone's garden shed and a toilet cubicle at Charnock Richard services. A quick repeat of what I am going to bring:

I shall be bringing some interesting items, a Salas VPI phono stage, a couple of R-2R Dacs, a Bigbottle BT2 preamp and my Neurochrome 286 power amp.

The Salas is a valve based phono stage, the R-2R Dac's are a Musician Pegasus and a Soekris 1321, both modified a little to work exclusively on Linear power supplies.
If you haven't heard a Neurochrome amp this will be your chance.

I could bring the Bigbottle BB3 phono stage as well, it has ousted a lot of well respected kit.

Lawrence001 - It went down very well, Steves worries about numbers etc were unfounded.

Another great NEBO gathering and the Nursery venue was ideal acoustically, the standard of sound produced by all the gear was very high.

Ian was a great host and serves a cracking pint of Camerons Strong Arm (local ruby bitter).

I suppose we had three main set ups, built around the speakers.

My digital set up using analogue semi active Yamaha NS-1000 based speakers.

Gordons digital source with DSP and Linkwitz LX Mini, bottom end reinforced with the bass units from his LX 521.

Mikes was based around his kralk TDB 12, using both digital and analogue sources.

So we had Sealed Box, Ported and Dipole flavours to listen to, all very different presentations, but good examples of each.

Both tube and solid state pre amps/power amps, PrimaLuna, Neurochrome, Nord, Bigbottle, Schiit etc.
We only had one turntable, but Mikes Thorens/Audiomods/Art9 is a cracking example.
Thanks to Alan (Firebottle) we had a selection of great phono stages to listen to and compare to Mikes own ERT, which is also excellent.

It was a very good day for me personally, I loved the variety of gear we had to listen to.
If I was pushed, I would say the highlight for me was Gordons LXMini/521 bass, these threw out such a realistic sound stage, with pin sharp imaging, could have listened to them all day. As for the kralks, I think they suited Tubes and analogue source over digital, not that the digital sounded poor, they just seemed to drop into a comfort zone with the PrimaLuna and Thorens. I'll let others comment on my set up, but was pleased with how it performed, amongst such great gear.

So congratulations Steve, another great event from my perspective, one of the best.

My thoughts (FWIW):

I thought the room was an ideal size and shape (and Mike was especially relieved that the timber over solid floor didn't challenge his Thorens suspension, not even when Steve fell off his chair :)

A bog basic speaker review, because I understand nothing about the other stuff:

All good gear being presented, embracing a wide range of options. I'd have to say that for me the star was Gordon's - those speakers had a lack of boxiness, which now having heard I may struggle to unhear when listening to more conventional speakers. Could have listened to that for the rest of my life, never mind all day. It would be an endgame sound for me.

I also liked the sound - and looks - of Ken's speakers. Handmade cabinets every bit as well finished as any shop-bought speakers, and the sound I thought was smooth and lively (if both things can exist together) and a fantastic bass which could really fill the room. They very much resembled NS1000s, using their mids and tweeters, but I think Ken said the bass units came from SVS subs.

Mike's Kralk TDB12s, which I've heard a couple a couple of times before, were as entertaining as ever, though I would agree were happier with valves and vinyl. Having said that, they did an incredible job with some great tunes provided by Rich from his phone's Band Camp library via Bluetooth I believe.

There was a lot more to these set ups "behind the scenes" as it were, but too complicated for me to describe.

But the best thing for a technonumpty like me had to be the people, largely made up of folk local to Hartlepool who were so friendly and welcoming I look forward to a return visit (NEBO 12?)

Thank you Steve, and Ian (landlord) for a great day. And I wasn't even hungover this morning, so that 'Strong Arm' might have turned me away from lager :)

Qwin
07-11-2021, 18:11
Just to correct you Steve.
My Scanspeak bass drivers were bought new from Falcon Acoustics, but that model was, as you said, used on the SVS2000 sub and others.
It has an incredibly flat and extended response, so much so that many retailers list it as a woofer, not a sub.
Its often overlooked, when seeking for a 12" woofer that will work well in a sealed box.

Pigmy Pony
07-11-2021, 18:48
Thank you Ken, I stand corrected :) Anyway, I thought they sounded every bit as good as they looked. No idea what frequency they went down to in that room, but it was pretty low. And damn near perfect to my ears. What size is your room at home?

Qwin
07-11-2021, 19:07
My room is only 4.3m x 4.0m into the alcoves either side of the chimney and 2.75m ceiling.

This is a nearfield measurement I took, f3 about 19Hz or less.

https://www.jkwynn.co.uk/Project_Images/Yam_Rev/YamRev_08B.jpg

Being closed box, there is no boomy ness or break up in my small room, even at high listening levels.
Ignore the SPL level (dB) as I didn't calibrate the level of my source.

Firebottle
08-11-2021, 11:29
NEBO 11, a great do. I was initially disappointed by the turnout, I was expecting more fellow enthusiasts. Any errors in the following are entirely down to failing memory..

However the music and kit brought by the attendees was fantastic and it was a very enjoyable bake-off. I had brought my cassette deck, yes cassette, so provided a bit of background music whilst all the kit was being brought in.

I managed to get a set up running to get the party started, into my small Sony speakers, they sound great in a small room but were totally lost in this venue. Music was rodrigo y gabriela.

As Rich was only there for the afternoon he setup his system with files on his phone connected by bluetooth to the dac. Preamp was a pot in a box feeding an NVA early A60 amplifier into Mike's Kralk speakers. Some great music was played but I don't remember any titles.

Sorry for the dark picture:

The weakest link in this system IMO was the pot in a box, so my Bigbottle BT2 preamp was substituted and things opened up by a large amount.
Then other substitutions were made, firstly an Audio-GD 75+75W power amp, this gave more body to the sound, I think Rich commented that the NVA was a bit lean.
Next substitution was my Neurochrome 286 power amplifier, this really improved the depth and image space. Some great tracks were enjoyed by all present.

In the background Ken had been slaving away on his complex setup and warming it up into his large dummy load.

The crossover and amplifier stack on Ken's bespoke rack. Speakers were Ken's much modified NS1000 look alikes, with tremendous bass extension and control.

Some seriously good sounds were enjoyed by all, even those hogging the bar:

https://i.imgur.com/D18oDaEl.jpg

Whilst Ken's library was being played Gordon got to work putting his multi channel system together, comprising an Octodac, an 8 channel class D Nord based power amplifier. When I first saw it on the side I thought it was a valve power amp as it wasn't small and had a well perforated top for ventilation.

The speakers used were the fantastic Linkwitz LXmini with bass reinforcement from additional boxes.

Good discussions going on:

In my opinion this was sublime imaging and sound, the music was just hanging 3 feet above the speakers and so dynamic. A really good session of great music.

The vibe then changed from the digital domain to a vinyl setup. More to come shortly.

My thoughts (FWIW):

Yes that surprised me a bit too, I didn't expect the Kralk TDB12's to favour valves and analogue as much as they did, normally to get good bass you need solid state but the Kralks came alive once they were plugged into my Primaluna EVO400i, admittedly there was more power on tap but to my ears the pairing was bob on and since i don't play anything other than vinyl on this system i'm happy with the performance.

To summarise my system comprised of the following:

Source: Thorens TD160 Super, Audiomods Series 6 arm, Audio Technica AT Art9 cartridge
Phono Stage: EAT E-Glo Petite, plus all of Alan Kendals phono stages about 4 of them can't remember what each was but they were all damn good
Amp: PrimaLuna Evo400i
Speakers: Kralk Audio TDB12

The main thing that impressed me with my system was it's ability to go loud, really loud without getting harsh or breaking up, the bass was deep (admittedly not as deep as Kens speakers) but enough so you could feel it through the seat of your pants. One thing I found quite funny was that Kens system with valves for his mid range and tweeters and a honking great D Class for the bass drew 1amp whereas my system with valve phono stage and a valve integrated amplifier drew 2.5 amps at least it helped to keep us all warm.

Overall a great day, it was a pity that some of the old regulars weren't there Mik Rik in particular for me was sorely missed, but all the systems and the music played (apart from the organ music Ken) was top notch, like usual I have a list of new music i need to buy, so roll on NEBO 12 let's hope we can have it at The Nursery again as it was about the best venue to date, Ian the landlord is a great guy a true music lover in his own right and very welcoming, the Strong Arm gave me a taste of the north east that I'd missed, I may pop in for a cheeky pint next week as i'm over there on business:eyebrows::eyebrows:

OK onto the evening adventures into vinyl replay. Many thanks for Mike bringing his TT:

https://i.imgur.com/2wKYcqHl.jpg

An analogue system was assembled with Mike's TT, his E.A.T. valve phonostage, Primaluna integrated amp and the Kralk speakers.
Black baffles look a bit.. er, black.

https://i.imgur.com/OUcnYysl.jpg

An all valve line up, making rather excellent sounds. A few discs were spun then alternative phono stages were substituted.
First off was my version of the Salas VPI (Valve phono Itch, so described because Mr Salas fancied designing a valve based phono stage after so much solid state design). Separate psu with valve rectification.

https://i.imgur.com/DrWhUQYl.jpg

An improvement on the E.A.T. I thought, next up was the Bigbottle BB3 I had made with exposed valves. This is now in the hybrid territory.
A huge increase in image prompted Mike to say 'I think i need a new phonostage'.

https://i.imgur.com/U45DiTHl.jpg

I think it was at about this stage that Steve fell off his stool. The first thing to come to hand was a camera :eyebrows:

https://i.imgur.com/mJd4wVql.jpg

I had one more phono stage to substitute, this time a solid state one. This is the Phonomac designed Avalon, on its very first public outing, kindly lent to me by Bigman80. It is so new it doesn't have it's logo on the front yet. An amazingly clear and well balanced presentation.

https://i.imgur.com/0S4PBFyl.jpg

There was a lot of vinyl played which even attracted a couple of punters from the adjacent bar to come in and enjoy.
All in all a damn fine time was had by all.

Have to give a big thanks to Steve for organising, a thank you to Ian the landlord who couldn't have been more accomodating, plus a thank you to Steve Pigmy Pony for ordering a couple of pizza's for later on to silence our rumbling bellies.

Unfortunately it wasn't the only thing rumbling later on with the effect of the Strongarm beer :booty:

Excellent write up and pics Alan, I will just add:

(a) The Strongarm beer caused a few rumblings in my hotel room too, I pity whoever did my room the next day.

(b) Very gracious of you to thank me for the pizzas - you ended up paying for them! I will make amends at NEBO 12, I promise :)

(c) Good that you got a pic of Steve's "stool malfunction" - I saw him the next day and he has no recollection...

Rich - if you read this, can you give us the titles of what you played? All I recall is The Cure, Fink (I think), and a 15 minute tribute to Florian Schneider :) My Christmas wish list awaits!

Thanks so much to Alan Kendal for this write up. You seem to have captured the essence of the day in your report. You will of course have to forgive me for falling off my stool. I was a bit tiddly due to drinking all day. Since i started NEBO ten years ago now there has been a spirit of the day. No, i'm not talking about the scotch ha ha, although over the past ten years there has been plenty of that. I speak of a great bond born of sheer enthusiasm and passion for our favourite past time.
When i arrived well before the kick off time i was greeted by those that had made the effort to get there in good time to get the party started. Having so many folks contact me to tell me they couldn't attend i was all set for a fall (long before the one from my stool). A case of Parkinson's law was needed and the people who did arrive though well and truly made up for those who couldn't get there due to work commitments, health or transport problems. To those folks i send out my thoughts and some positive energy and hope to see yall next year. To those who came and made the day work, i send my thanks and gratitude. It was also great that some of the folks from the bar attended and stayed for quite some time, especially Christian who at 24 years old thought it was absolutely amazing. The music too was just fantastic the whole day.

https://i.imgur.com/IHQAC9T.jpg

I read on the NEBO Facebook page of people's highlights. I really couldn't identify any highlights personally as it was like being at a festival. At a festival there are many bands playing different styles of music which is exactly my view of NEBO 11. All of the equipment present was of such a high standard they all presented music differently, all of them in a very enjoyable way. Alan and Shirley, Mike, Ken, Gordon, Steve and my son Tommy, Thank you all. You all made a potential disappointment some thing very special indeed. I doff me cap to you all.

Huge thanks to Steve for organising. Had a lovely afternoon catching up with some of regulars again and enjoying the systems. Gordon and Ken's systems had me floored and I could live within that bass of Kens system for days. The huge soundscape projected by Gordon's rig was something I'd never heard before. Such inspiration and innovation in both set ups. Stunning.

Unfortunately I had to leave around 5pm so missed the vinyl session but had great fun early doors with my modest contributions (an NVA A60, a cheap passive and Arcam dac with a lab PSU). It seemed to be my job to kick things off music wise and so I focused on some dance remixes which I hope all enjoyed. Firebottle joined the fun and we played with a few combos of pre and power amps into Mike's speakers which were all great to hear.

Since folk were asking around the playlist here's a few of them.
