Unlike a lot of products at crazy money they probably will genuinely improve the sound of your system... however I think I agree with this appraisal posted on another forum:
''If $750k was small change for me I am pretty sure I would not want something like that in the room with me when listening to music. I would possibly opt for both the higher quality sound and higher quality living space of a large room designed around unobtrusive appropriately sized soffit mounted drivers with appropriate for the room directivity, angled walls to delay the first reflection and move the sound out of the axial direction and into the side-to-side, distributed subs and other passive room treatment as required.''
I suppose you pays your money and takes your choice. I am sure that they are more than competent speakers. So far as looks are concerned I have a soundproofed bunker and I am the only one that uses it. If something sounds good, but looks like shit that is fine with me. Even if I had it I would not spend that sort of money on one pair of speakers. For me perceived value for money is key. Everyone will have their own take that of course.
Coming back to the title of the thread "Big Loudspeakers" IMO a good bigun will often sound better to me than a smallun.

Big audiophile speakers means big treated room and the best amplification and source available. For only the 100th of 1% but we can dream...eh!

I'll wait for a pair to come up secondhand. And use the leftover money to buy a nice house with no neighbours and a BIG dedicated listening room.
You'd need the big room, ideally look in the estate agent's description for 'Ballroom.'

They can't be that good if you have to wear a mask to listen to them. :D

More or less what Gilbert Briggs, of Wharfedale, said 60 years ago.
Like a lot of large 'superspeakers': Wilson Audio; Focal; Bowers and Wilkins, KEF etc. those Magico speakers are quite hideous in appearance, and I'm not sure I could bear looking at them for long. But of course aesthetics is in the eye of the beholder, and if I had the room I would go for a large Martin Logan or Sound-Lab electrostatic design.

The fact that you can almost see through them is an advantage to me.

I have heard these and they need a much larger room than shown in the photo above. (I would also prefer a light oak used for the wood frames)

Perhaps I should be looking for a remote property with a large garden in a warm country with low rainfall :) Still wouldn't come near to ZZ Top at Castle Donington 1985. That was LOUD, the loudest outdoors I've ever heard. You'd need big money to do that.
I came across this list;
The Megabucks Speaker List although it is not up to date;
$200,000 or more (13 speakers)
$100,000 or more (32 speakers)
$50,000 or more (83 speakers)
$25,000 or more (157 speakers)
$10,000 or more (275 speakers)
If anybody thinks you've spent too much money on your audio system just show them this list.
I wonder who'll be the first to cross the $2 million dollar barrier?

I'd have to climb over that lot just to get into the room. They'd look more like massive headphones.
lol yes they really are a 'Come round and have a look at my new loudspeakers' loudspeaker.
Not sure what to say, TBH, other than... Utterly hideous!!
The complete antithesis of not only what I think great loudspeakers are about, but hi-fi in general:doh:
And what does the tit look like standing there in his face mask?:wanker:
Anyway, an interesting thread starter:)
Marco.

appearance-wise they are certainly 'function over form' I agree, can't say that it would be a deal-breaker for me though. I don't understand your comment about them being the 'antithesis of great hi-fi' though? I suspect they are at least pretty good, probably very good.
I've no idea why he thought it necessary to wear his mask for the photo either, maybe he just likes it?

Ok, with the given understanding of the usual caveat of 'each to his or own', firstly I'm not a big fan of tall (slim-ish) multiple-driver speakers [you know my preferred tastes in that respect - give me a fat-assed, wide-baffle every day, with a 15-incher, or two, tucked behind it], and I hate black speakers. I like natural-wood colours, or in the case of my Lockies, quality Formica!:D
Secondly, and to pick up on your point, as you also know, I'm an 'SPPV' guy [first and foremost, any loudspeakers or piece of hi-fi equipment should offer High Sound-Per-Pound Value] and also, from my own perspective, be a 'giant killer' [i.e. punch WELL above its weight, sonically, for its cost].
Therefore 'HPHIFI' [House Price Hi-Fi] is an affront to my sensibilities, and the antithesis of what I believe hi-fi should be about: catering for and servicing the needs of ENTHUSIASTS, not 'key janglers' with more money than sense, which is mostly who these sorts of products are aimed at!
Lastly, I've heard a couple of examples of Magico speakers, admittedly further down the range, at Cranage Hall hi-fi show, and was distinctly nonplussed, sounding much more like hi-fi than music, which TBH are my feelings about 90% of the loudspeakers made today. Therefore, if I suddenly became a crass idiot overnight, with more money than sense, those would probably be the LAST speakers on earth I'd buy (for all reasons given)!!
Will that do?:);)
Marco.
P.S and the wearing of a mask (presumably indoors in his house), just reiterates the fact that he's an ARSE!

Indeed...MAJOR SPEW:spew:
Marco.
P.S See my post in the mod room:)
There's nothing like poking a hornet's nest.
To me they are ugly, and what about WAF. I also question that tweeter, lost in so much other driver area, 1" domes have distinct limitations, and I assume that they go loud which may strain the tweeter's limits.
I agree about value Marco, and if we draw a linear graph approximating expense, y axis, and sound quality, x axis, I look for an anomalously placed plot above the line.
At this price point I doubt that buyers analyse much, and take it as read that they perform well, and if they were bad it would be obvious.
I also do not like black speakers, but life is full of compromises.
There is also something obscene about the really expensive stuff given world problems.

well I agree with you on the 'value for money' bit which is why I said in the o/p that I agreed with the bloke I quoted that you could do better for less (well a bit less anyway) at least theoretically by having a customised room and soffit-mounted drivers.
I don't really care what the equipment looks like, there's only a few bits of equipment where the looks put me off enough that I wouldn't even consider it regardless of how good it is, Vivid Audio Gaya speakers as an example. https://vividaudio.com/giya/giya-g2-series-2/
Yeah the Magicos are not 'pretty' but I think they look purposeful rather than ugly. They not likely to clear WAF but then at that price level they are going to be in a dedicated room, not the living room so not like they will spoil the decor.
That's two fifteens a side btw so your need for fifteens is catered for in spades ;)
I don't recall hearing any Magicos at Cranage. Either I missed the room or they were not there the couple of times I've been. I don't recall ever hearing any anywhere.
There's nothing like poking a hornet's nest.

.
I'd guess they have taken tweeter power handling into account, they're a proper engineering-led company, they're not likely to have made a schoolboy error with their flagship speaker.
There's nothing like poking a hornet's nest.

Completely agree. Don't get me wrong though, I've got nothing whatsoever against anyone spending $750k on loudspeakers (or anything else for that matter) if it makes them happy, and most importantly, they can COMFORTABLY afford it without getting into serious debt or skimping on feeding themselves or their family.
I would also respect the person concerned if they'd chosen said speakers after judiciously researching and auditioning alternatives, and therefore the decision to own them was based primarily on sonics (and how well they matched their system), instead of 'show-off' factor, all of course which could be the case with the guy in question, plus respect would be due if they'd spent as much money on their music collection!
However, I won't be holding my breath, in that respect, about mask-boy, on page 1...;)
Marco.
Would someone buying a high end Merc ask what the bearing tolerances are etc? I doubt it, they would probably assume that the manufacturers had done their work properly.
It's probably my personal aversion to 1" domes Martin. (Especially in the case of the Meridian 6000.)
well I agree with you on the 'value for money' bit which is why I said in the o/p that I agreed with the bloke I quoted that you could do better for less (well a bit less anyway) at least theoretically by having a customised room and soffit-mounted drivers.
It's not so much VFM, as how someone assesses or judges 'value' is massively subjective, but rather more SPPV, i.e. could one have achieved as good a sound, or arguably better, for less (or MUCH less) outlay?
Yes, I know that's also subjective, but what I mean is it's not really a money thing... It's a SOUND thing, and therefore about getting the 'biggest bang for your buck', which is a little different.
That's what my system (and yours) is all about, albeit at a much lower level of expenditure. My Lockwoods, for example, cost me (including mods), just under £4k, but sonically I'd happily put them up against anything in today's market costing up to £30k, or perhaps more.
That, for me, is genuine 'SPPV' in action, and I've replicated it throughout my system with *every* constituent component and cable.
Not because I couldn't afford to spend more, but because I derive much more pleasure from having the skill and good judgment to assemble such a system 'on the cheap', as opposed to simply getting my cheque book out.
It's somewhat akin to buying, say a £20 bottle of wine, which could rival one at £100, as any mug with enough money can go out and buy a very expensive bottle of wine, and it be good, but not everyone has the knowledge and discernment to do the same with a much less expensive one, and for it to subsequently turn out to be a stonker!
And so it is with hi-fi... Therefore, *that* is my ethos:)
I don't really care what the equipment looks like...
Cool stuff, but then that's where we differ. I'm afraid that no matter how good something sounds, if it looks fugly as sin, in my book (or offends my sensibilities), no way could I sit and listen to it.
Essentially, I'm a retro guy, and have pretty conservative tastes in how loudspeakers should look, so if it's not some big old box that used to (or still does) perform duties in a recording studio, or something the BBC used once for monitoring or broadcasting purposes, then I'm unlikely to be interested.
Yeah the Magicos are not 'pretty' but I think they look purposeful rather than ugly.
Again, both 'purposeful' and 'ugly' are entirely subjective. My view of 'purposeful' is this, which I'm sure many folks would consider as 'ugly' (JBL 4355):

That's two fifteens a side btw so your need for fifteens is catered for in spades ;)
Nope, see above. They're still too skinny!!:D
I don't recall hearing any Magicos at Cranage. Either I missed the room or they were not there the couple of times I've been. I don't recall ever hearing any anywhere.
Not sure where you were at that show, as I was with another friend, but it was in Tony's room, from Coherent.
They sounded 'ok', in an non-offensive way, and would be adequate for background music, but were an epic fail, musically [as I find is usually the case with speakers designed more by computers than ears], which at nearly £15k, for the models in question, was just ridiculous.
Marco.

I went the first year it was on, and the third year, so I guess that must have been the year in the middle when I didn't go.
Yups, must've been, mate. Anyway, talking of speakers, have you heard from Shaun at all about your 'ardons? You do realise that's it's nearly three years now since you commissioned him to do the job?:eek:
I know it wasn't 'urgent', but that's just taking the piss, and mostly due to your sitting back and not pushing him to finish the bloody things, lol! I'd be climbing the walls, as even if I wasn't in a hurry, the annoyance factor of knowing that they were just sitting there, doing fook all, would irk me beyond belief!!!

he's not been able to do much for the last year or so because of the pandemic, which is fair enough. I'm not really in any hurry for them, happy with what I've got.
Plus I spend my whole working day chasing people up, not so keen on doing it in my free time as well.

Fundamentally I agree with the need for any purchase to offer a certain degree of value for money if not punch well above its weight.
However, when we get into these money no object realms the rules change for me.
For example if there is one speaker priced at half (or less) the cost of one only offering 1% extra performance, that's the one I'm going for, value be damned.
Also the looks are unimportant in my opinion IF performance is the main criteria, it's the only criteria.
Build a separate bunker from wives/families/whatever if need be, you've just dropped £***000.00 on a pair of speakers, you do not wish to be disturbed.

I hear where you're coming from, but again that's where we're *so* different, as I HATE 'loose ends', or jobs lying around half done, which need completed!
I don't buy the notion of there having been an extra delay due to the pandemic , unless he was ill (hopefully not), as he lives 10 mins away from the lock-up he uses as his workshop, so what better time than to use the opportunity (when people aren't bringing you more work in) to catch up with and finish off jobs that have been lying there and needing done for YEARS!
Get them done and out the way, clear the decks, as it were., would've been what I'd have done in his position. As you say though, it's a good job you're not in a hurry!!

For speakers that big you would want a MASSIVE room.
But I think for speakers like that it wouldn't be enough just for the room to be massive - the money would be better spent building a dedicated room and paying a professional to make the interior acoustically 'right'. Then use the rest of the cash to buy what best suits that room.
So, room then speakers then amplification then front end. Then never get to listen to it. Because if I was that rich I probably wouldn't be at home very much :)

I know what you mean, but how would you know how you'd behave, in that respect, and how you'd assess and implement your buying decisions, unless in real life you were in the fortunate position of money being 'no object'?;)
I guess everyone's different, but I've always found it a somewhat strange notion to swallow, that if you suddenly come into lots of money, you automatically abandon all previous sense of prudent judgment, and the desire to get the most for your cash and not feel 'ripped off'...
I don't know about you, but that's why if I won the Lottery tomorrow, I wouldn't abandon my inherent desire to obtain VFM, or in the case of hi-fi, SPPV, just because I've got a few more quid to spend... If you become a completely different person overnight, simply as a result of being rich, then I think that says something rather superficial about you that isn't particularly good.
Btw, the 'you' in question is as in the collective 'one', not you in particular. Stay TRUE to your beliefs and your origins, no matter how rich you become, is my mantra - and in my experience it usually pays off!
Btw, on a totally unrelated subject, why did you disappear from the Euros football thread, halfway through it?
I was enjoying your contributions, and then next minute you were gone, even though England got all the way to the final! Given how much of a footy (and England) fan you are, I'd have thought you'd have been contributing your erudite analysis of the games all the way to the end.
So what happened?:D:hmm:

Hi Marco,
Appreciate the detail and personalisation of your response there. Firstly I do agree that one should stay true to ones beliefs, therefore as my belief (and the overiding factor involved here) is the pursuit of maximum sound quality, then price cannot be allowed to enter the decision making process regardless of if it's a rip off (in other people's relative terms) or not.
For me the fundaments of becoming superficial is a completely different thing as I wouldn't be buying them to show off or to look at, they are to listen to, and if they are the best for that job then that's the end of it.
Also I would argue that not buying something because it doesn't tie in with personal aesthetic tastes, is far more superficial because you're actively choosing to turn down the one with the higher performance (which surely is the remit of a speaker from a purists perspective). In my opinion if money (value) or aesthetics enter the equation at that point it could render the intended outcome (max sound quality) skewed somewhat.
However as a big caveat I realise that is not realistic for the many or even the few but ultimately that would be my mantra were I able to afford it.
Also i would add that 'rich' people do get ripped of all the time but a lot of them are so rich they don't even notice it to a greater or lesser extent.
Of course we're all in this hobby for different reasons and of course restrictions always apply!
Regarding the footie thread, yes I was very much enjoying the debate and all the points brought up I simply became too busy with home and work life to really give an informed response and or add anything I would deem worthwhile. I wasn't really active in any other areas of the website or indeed any others for a time either but hope to be again soon as workload eases!
Nice of you to notice it and mention btw.

I see what you're saying Chris, though what you describe is precisely what most of us mere mortals get with what we have :)
At the same time can you imagine Kanye West dishing it out in an acoustically perfect venue? It would also be painful, I would have to leave :D Sometimes we can forget that the hifi is there for us to listen to music, not equipment.
And it's just occurred to me that if we had that kind of money we could see our favourite bands (the ones that aren't dead yet) anywhere in the world anytime we want!

Yup, it's a theoretic but purist answer but Marco is right in regards to not knowing until it happens to you.
A lot of the bands I've seen live sound better on my system.... Way better.
I'll be shot for saying that but it's the truth. The atmosphere and vibe are of course completely missing though.... Apart from the 'live' albums and if I'm very very drunk ....

Yes, most live performances I've been to have been a bit rough sounding, sometimes really rough, but as you say there is the atmosphere, which I think contributes more to the sense of 'being there' than does the sound quality.
We're all speculating on how we would spend if money were no object, but I don't think any of us know for sure how we'd be if it became a reality. Like the lottery winner who says "It isn't going to change me".
Yeah right! That's what an ex-work colleague of Anita's said a few years ago when he won 4 million, even said as much to the local paper. He intended to buy the house he lived in and carry on. Within six months he'd chucked his job, bought a big house in the sticks and a few cars. He used to like a pint, so he's probably dead or in jail by now...
Many do not appreciate the extent to which having an early life of privation effects our values. It sensitises us to our unfulfilled needs, and we often have a nearly permanent sense of 'hunger' in many respects.
It is also not realised that this can be a major advantage, in that this sensitivity enables appreciation of improvements in our life consumption, and this can be spread over decades giving us a sense of progress. I have appreciated evrey improvement in Hi-Fi, motorbikes, food and homes that I have had.
Many 'rich kids' have little or no desire to discipline themselves because they have had everything handed to them on a plate. This can result in a marked lack of autonomy, in that an awareness of discipline, and any resulting achievement, has not been a part of their development, and they can then languish in a futile indolent existence.
If by the age of 30 you have had all the best food, wines, Hi-Fi, cars, and hence best women, (anatomically), what is left?
Unless there is an epiphany and a grasping of challenge and work to produce, there may be doldrums, and possibly dysfunctional relationships, and a decline of some sort.
I look at my own path from really basic Hi-Fi, to where I am now and not only has it really improved, but I have learnt a great deal about the subject, and also my own personality. (I am not as wealthy as some of you here.)
The atmosphere at a live event is very powerful; there is an interaction between the performers and the audience which cannot be so with a recording, it is based on the social signals of human interaction..

Insightful as always Dennis, and spot on imo :)
I think the desire to 'move forward' is part of the human condition, and without it we could so easily become lost. And I suspect a huge windfall such as a lottery win would have the same effect. Which is why if I won a huge sum I would be giving most of it away, and I'm not even kidding.
I would also respect the person concerned if they'd chosen said speakers after judiciously researching and auditioning alternatives, and therefore the decision to own them was based primarily on sonics (and how well they matched their system), instead of 'show-off' factor, all of course which could be the case with the guy in question, plus respect would be due if they'd spent as much money on their music collection!
.
A bit out of date. If the multi-millionaire buyer is under say thirty-five he might not have a physical collection at all, just a streaming service or services (Tidal for example has 45 million songs available) giving him access to probably 90 percent of all the music ever recorded.
Only owning a few records or CDs has not been evidence that someone is not really a music-lover for some time now.
So, room then speakers then amplification then front end. Then never get to listen to it. Because if I was that rich I probably wouldn't be at home very much :)
If I was that rich I'd probably be home quite a lot, it's just that my home would be in the Bahamas.

First dibs here mate I'll take all you don't want.
I wouldn't be giving it away I'd be spending it on stupid stuff like giant speakers.
I wouldn't tell anyone about it, if they asked how I could afford them I'd just say I won them in a truth-telling competition. IME Civilians have no concept of the price of high-end hi-fi, if you told them they cost you five grand they'd probably believe it.

Appreciate the detail and personalisation of your response there. Sure, and that's cool. I'm just a little different. Since things have to be looked at, as well as used, appearances for me are also important [I say the same to my wife:D]. Therefore, if I *really* HATED how something looked, or it didn't fit with my (largely vintage audio) proclivities, I couldn't have it no matter how good it sounded.
It would just put me off and spoil my enjoyment. That also applies to the history and/or ethos of the company who produced it. If I don't approve of that, then I won't buy any of their gear. Much like anything I put inside my house, hi-fi or otherwise, it has 'feel' right and tick the right boxes in areas that often have nothing to do with its functionality, before I'll give it house room. That's just me:)
Yup, sure, I totally understand that train of thought, but it's not how my mind works, as my buying decisions in hi-fi are influenced by many other factors (see above). It's not just hi-fi, I feel exactly the same about furniture, interior décor and any 'knick-knacks' that adorn my home (and Del's). I'm extremely fussy about that sort of thing lol, and will scritinise things to the nth degree (as does my wife) before any final buying decisions are made.
Also i would add that 'rich' people do get ripped of all the time but a lot of them are so rich they don't even notice it to a greater or lesser extent.
Indeed so, however it definitely wouldn't be me. I'd still be a very shrewd and 'switched on' buyer, and want to justify every penny spent, no matter HOW much money I had. It's fundamentally how I'm wired and an intrinsic part of ME, so that simply wouldn't change if I were rich. However, I'm not exactly 'poor' now either, and my spending behaviour (or rather the judgement criteria used to carry out such) hasn't changed since I started my own business from scratch in 1997, with nothing...;)
Regarding the footie thread, yes I was very much enjoying the debate and all the points brought up I simply became too busy with home and work life to really give an informed response and or add anything I would deem worthwhile. My point was you can no longer say that people are not serious music lovers because they don't have a large music collection. Everyone now has access to all the music ever made. A large collection is no longer necessary.
I understand and agree with your point, to an extent, and I also think it's valid for some.
However, I'd argue that serious music lovers, who invest in very expensive replay equipment [a key point, which most sub-35 year-olds don't], aside from whatever they have stored on hard-drives to stream with, have large physical music collections, particularly on vinyl, as they like to OWN their music, not simply have access to worthless files they'll never OWN:)
And that certainly applies to me, with around 6TB of albums stored on NAS drives, from which to stream from, together with 2500 CDs and 3500 LPs. You may also consider it relevant (or not) that the latter in total are worth (and also initially cost) considerably more than my hi-fi system;)

I like natural-wood colours, or in the case of my Lockies, quality Formica!:
Er.....you do realise that the bottom two drivers in those Magicos are both 15 inchers, don't you?! :D
I'd like to hear those new Magicos as I've heard several of their smaller models and have liked them very much. Admittedly, the price is terrifying - heck, they make my Beolab 90s look a bargain! That said, there's some serious technology and exotic materials going into them. Good luck to anyone who can both afford them and house them - I suspect they'll be very good.

Yes of course, but the point is they're not housed (for me) in the right enclosures. For that, see the pic of the blue-fronted JBLs I posted a pic of earlier, with twin 15-inchers, SIDE BY SIDE, lol!:)
Think WIDTH, my boy, not just length... No doubt Ursula frequently reminds you of that!;)
Marco.
big isnt always best... in fact usually isnt.
Lol, I'm saying nuffink... But I know from my experience, if girls *must* choose, then GIRTH is usually always preferred to length:eyebrows:;)
...as long as the 'owner' knows how to use it:D

It doesn't come down to width or girth with mine as I've got ten and twelve inchers and can make them fire in all directions!
Aye, as long as it's not blanks!:D
Anyway, you've got a post to answer on my Gallery thread:ner:
Marco.
