I have a beautiful Linn Klout in A1 condition that I was thinking of selling. Then I thought maybe I could find a modern speaker system, a streaming DAC and have a wonderful listening experience.
Budget speakers 1K, streaming DAC 1K
Suggestions welcomed.
Cheers,
Peter

the Klout will drive most speakers so probably a bit more info needed as to what you're looking for in that regard.

I'm in my 60's but my musical taste is young. I don't partake in classical but jazz fusion winds me up. Metal, jazz, alternative, blues rock, etc. I'm thinking in the used market there should be lot's at the 1k mark. I've owned JBL studio monitors, B&W, KEF, PSB. I have a pair of Linn Sara 9's on the Klout now but they don't do it for me anymore.

The Saras are not my sort of thing either.
Yes loads of choice on the used market for that money. JBL usually a safe bet for that sort of music and it's where I'd go if I was in your part of the world. Lots of speaker brands I'm not familiar with over there though, PSB for one.
I always wanted to try something from Thiel but quite rare here. Revel look well-engineered but don't know what a grand would buy you for that brand.

Hi Peter,
Welcome to AoS. Hope all is well?:)
Am I missing something here....where's the preamp in the suggested system to partner the Klout?
If the thought is that the preamp will be built into whatever DAC is purchased, that's not a route I'd go, as the Klout was designed to partner the Kairn, both sonically and electrically (in terms of input impedance), so Linn gear isn't the best (not really suited to) mixing and matching with equipment from other manufacturers.
Therefore, Peter, my advice would either be to find a nice clean example of a Karin, and do the job properly, in terms of building a system (from source to speakers) to do the Klout justice, and you wouldn't necessarily need Linn speakers on the end, or sell the Klout and use the funds to invest in your intended streaming system, perhaps with some active speakers, if you want to keep things simple?
However, some more detail, in terms of what you're really striving to achieve would be useful:cool:
Marco.
I assume the streamer will be used as the pre-amp.
I don't see that working well with the Klout... Not a recipe for top-notch SQ, IMO.
Marc.
In your part of the world you should be able to find used Vandersteen Model 1 or 2 in your budget.
Richard V launched the '2' series about 45 years ago and the '1' about 5 years later and these are still going today during which time he has steadily improved them. They are I think exceptional value. Under that 'sock' is conventional bass in a box, sealed I think, with the tweeter (model 1) and mid and tweet (model 2) mounted above in small open baffle or no baffle and time aligned. This provides precise imaging, a wide sweet spot and lovely open sound with tight bass.
If I did not build my own speakers I would buy Vandersteen

Marc,
I decided many years ago to not buy a Kairn and have used instead a Beresford TC-7520. Probably not a good decision but it solved a budget problem and was an interface between a TV and sound. The Klout has been driving Sara 9's. I've only used this to watch and listen to Blu-Ray concerts and the odd movie.
I have Wakonda which I'm not using and may give that a try. Or I may just put all this stuff up for sale.

I had this amp and it is a gutsy little amp and able to drive pretty much any speaker. I drove DIY speakers using Seas Excel drivers from a kit, and it was phenomenal. I also brought it to a stereo shop and it had no problem with other speakers. The soundstage is huge and able to produce high volumes. Pick the speaker you like and go for it.
Similar to my Seas Froy Mk3 speaker kit I used w/ the Linn Klout.

Not exactly "modern" but yes they were a fine speaker.
I have a PC based system. Naim DAC V-1, Linn Klout and ATC SCM11s and have had no problems with matching. Sounds bloody good too :)
