FS: KEF 103/4 speakers

My first FS post here, so please be gentle with me guys :)

I have for sale a lovely pair of classic KEF Reference 103/4 speakers in oak finish. The cabinets are in really good condition for age and I've tried to show two main blemishes in the pictures. Speaker A has a round coffee mug mark on top. I haven't done any attempt at polishing/removing it. Speaker B has a vertical mark on its right side that's about 12 inch long. It actually looks worse in the picture than in real life and to be honest I hadn't even noticed it before taking the pictures. Other than that, the cabinets are very presentable, complete with grilles in excellent condition. The speakers are a matched pair, with the same serial number 004641 A and B. For those that may not be familiar with this model, it was KEF reference design manufactured between 1992-95. A three-way system, the 103/4 employed four drive units combining KEF famous Uni-Q driver array, with its superior definition and stereo imaging, with dual coupled cavity bass loading and conjugate load matching to produce a system of commendable performance for its size. It had a very high sensitivity (91dB), high output capability, and an outstanding power handling capacity.

The speakers need the usual repair to their woofer surrounds and donuts. I have a whole repair kit, imported from the US. The kit itself sells for £84 on eBay (before any duties/VAT). I don't have time to finish this project as we are moving house (from London to Scotland) in 3 weeks :eek:
The speakers sound surprisingly good as they are. I have actually taken measurements using a UMIK-1 mic and REW software - please see the last picture. Of course, you can see a response dip in bass but if positioned closed to the wall, they sound very solid.

I promised SWMBO that the speakers will NOT travel with us to Scotland so this is a bit of a cry for help :D:eyebrows:

How about £250 including the repair kit? I have no boxes or time to organise anything so they would have to be collected from Ealing.

There's currently only one listing for the 103/4 on the evil auction site, in Germany, wtih a BIN price of EUR 854.99 :doh: Searching for completed listings, there was a fully restored pair in black finish that sold in April for £400 (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274771912682). The seller actually made a few very good points on buying these speaker second hand. Properly restored woofer foam surrounds and centre donuts are one thing but what is rarely mentioned by the sellers is the SP1353 tweeters. They are ferrofluid cooled and are usually either in a sorry state and in need of a ferrofluid change or - much worse - have been swapped out for an inferior Q range plastic dome tweeters.

The pair I am offering here can easily be brought into a fully restored level with a bit of DIY. I've checked that the original SP1353 tweeters are in place and taken measurements - included in my first post - to prove that they are still in good condition.

Thought I'd commented but must have been on the Wam. These are great speakers I had a pair for a while. In fact my pair had a scratch down the side rather like these. Have you actually checked the state of the woofers as if it is my old pair then they were already done!

I would also point out that Kef were very strict with their frequency response measurements, they are true anechoic chamber measurements. In room bass response will go much lower. Worth noting though that they also tuned the bass in these dual chamber bass speakers to be tight, clean and accurate, not to get a lower measurement. This sounds so much better than the honk boxes many companies made, even well respected ones.

The KEFs generated quite a bit of interest on eBay. Now sold, paid for and getting collected tomorrow :cheers:
