I asked Alan for his opinion about them, and he very kindly offered to have a chat about it. I was on the fence, mainly concerned about reliability but as Alan pointed out they are built like tanks, and the caps and transistors are readily available and not expensive, so even a good overhaul of the main caps and outputs would not be too costly.
Also your help, Martin, is greatly appreciated, your experience and comments on Krell amps gave me confidence it could work for me, thank you.
I will do some serious listening over the next few days and post a few more thoughts on it,

I think you summed it up earlier, astonishing bass control and separation of instruments. That's what I like about mine. Probably would not be so obvious if using a speaker that is an easy load but so few modern speakers are.
I'd guess the Wilsons have some serious impedance swings that would challenge an 'ordinary' amplifier, but a Krell will drive any load like it's not there. That's the difference.

Completely agree, I noticed on several tracks the mid and bass drivers of the Wilson’s doing some serious excursions back and forth. One track was Supertramp’s - School it made me think that they and the amp would be working hard, it sounded great. I presume the loading would have been swinging all over the place and the Krell would just be supplying what was needed.

Yes it was modify it or buy another, and as it is very strong I thought lowering it the best option, I have some square rubber bungs for the four uprights which will tidy it up, also what is left will make a nice two shelf unit, I just need to make some feet pads with adjustable isolators to weld to the legs.

It certainly look the biz - even the name plate is held on by 6 screws. How many watts in Class A?
this one is Power Output(nominal)80 watts/channel into 8 ohms (Full Class A), doubles with each halving of load impedance down to 1 ohm, so at 4ohm - 160 watts, 2ohm - 320 watts, 1 ohm 640 watts. They did a 200 watt see https://www.stereophile.com/content/krell-ksa-200s-power-amplifier-specifications, it must sound frighting when fully unleashed, connected to a really good pair of speakers.
The volumes and punch from the KSA-80 is quite astounding IMHO, and I am just driving a pair of Wilson Benesch Vectors, they recommend a minimum 100w amp(no upper specified) and are rated at 89dB spl (2.83V/1m) , 6 Ohms Nominal / 4 Ohms Min. At +0dB setting on the pre-amp I measured over 90dB at 3m the impact of the drums and bass was something else, I did turn it down after a couple of minutes before I got complaints from neighbours.

Yes I am rather surprised as well, I reckon an equivalent amp of the same quality would easily be £20K.
No doubt the ecological energy concerns are coming into play with prices.
Maybe, I notice that people do tend to massively over-estimate what it costs to run a class A amplifier.
I think the main reason for the affordable s/h prices is that they are relatively rare and so not many people have heard them, but the outlay is still high enough that they are unwilling to take a blind punt. My second KSA50S cost a month's take-home so not a trivial spend even if it's still a relative bargain for the performance on offer.
Size, weight, heat and WAF probably puts some people off the idea too.

Don’t quite get this?
If your saying people are put off by thinking it’s energy/electric hungry and thus lowering values it does not make much sense. If you think about it 0.6kw/h is a drop in the ocean when compared to running/charging an electric vehicle. If it relates to components I suspect there are rarer and more valuable elements inside a modern class D amp that an older class A, but maybe the class A uses more by volume.

Buying any used amplifier as opposed to a new one is always 'greener' for those concerned about such things/think it will make a scrap of difference to anything.

I seem to remember talk of making class A illegal a while ago, and this may influence people's regard for them.
There is so much movement ATM on electricity generation and more particularly battery technology that it is difficult to know the likely final (asymptotal), outcome of costs.
There is also the consideration of the high stress that class A components are subjected to, and hence reliability.
I have always loved class A BTW.

I think my 300b SET amp draws about 300 watts, I can live with that. About a tenth of what a kettle would use probably.
I was impressed by the weight and build of Macca's Krell, it's an honest design signalling its intent with brutish looks imo. A lifestyle product it is not :)
I suspect secondhand prices are relatively low because average Joe fears a high end but aging product such as this will be scarily expensive to fix. Firebottle showed this not to be the case.

There is a lot of guff talked about ECO stuff and saving the planet, don’t get me wrong I think as a race we really need to sort the mess out that we have created. However let’s take the example of electric cars, these at present run on Lithium Batteries, there is already heads up on supply shortages and ultimately having to mine the stuff off the sea floor, REALLY how eco friendly is that. Even new battery technologies don’t resolve the same resources issue.
I am not advocating keeping petrol/diesel cars, lorries, planes and ships they need to go.
What we need is a worldwide clear and concise green strategy that not only deals with the issues now but also looks to the future. Alternatively we need to plan to leave the planet in about 50-100 years max, unfortunately those left behind will burn.

Still compares favourably with the cost of consumables such as valves or stylii. Quality isn't necessarily too expensive, but it's not going to be FOC. I'm hoping to get a listen to yours when I get round to bringing your RCM back :)

Depends how poor one is, and many of us would leave a power amp on all the time for SQ reasons.

That's an easy habit to get out of.
It's a preference for many.
Maybe some, I think it is a practice that is dying out.
I think any amp that takes more than a couple of minutes at most to reach optimal performance is worth avoiding. Assuming there are any, which I doubt.
Actually thinking about it the speakers do have to warm up, which actually might be audible and could be why people think it is the amplifier warming up instead. But that's still only a few minutes tops.
Class A amplifiers can only be 50% efficient at most, and since they draw constant current, what you are not using to power your speakers comes out as heat. Thus if left idling, or playing music quietly most of the power is dissipated as heat in the amplifier.
My Levinson Class A monoblocks are 25W (into 8 Ohm) and during the summer months they are too hot to use. In winter it's a different matter! :)

They sound very inefficient,, the Krell is quite happy ticking along a -35dB giving of a little warmth.

They were designed to be used with Quad ESLs, which should see no more than about 30V peak. I believe the Levinsons use +/- 25V rails. Anyway they put out:
25W (continious sine wave) into 8 Ohm
50W into 4 Ohm
100W into 2 Ohm
200W into 1 Ohm

And they do run hot - each drawing 400W from the mains, most of which will be turned into heat.

Barry is a dyed in the wood Quad 57 man, like myself.
A lot of Krells use their 'Sustained Plateau Bias' circuit:
Krell's "Sustained Plateau Biasing," a patented Krell technique that provides an effective equivalent to class-A biasing—without a long-term power dissipation penalty—by anticipating the size of any and every musical event. It uses high-speed current-feedback circuitry to do this, then holds these required levels in a static condition for tens of seconds after the event is over. This minimizes any possible dynamic interaction of bias level with sound quality.
The KSA50S which has this feature only gets moderately warm unless you thrash it at high levels.
The older models don't have this feature, for example the KSA100 mk2 with its twin fans puts out 650 watts of heat through its top vents, pretty much the same as a domestic convection heater. But it is 100 watts in class A. In the winter you don't need any other source of heat in the room.
The theoretical figure is 50%, the figure in practice is likely to be a little lower.
My 45% was given as a maximum theoretical efficiency.

A lot of manufacturers try and get round the class A efficiency issue with varying solutions. I'd be interested to compare them to see which get subjectively closest to the class A sound.
I suspect the answer would be there's no such thing as a free lunch but would like to be pleasantly surprised.

Is there actually a class A sound? I'm not sure there is. I suppose years ago when crossover distortion was still a thing then class A was a solution to that, but now it seems a bit superfluous.
I got three different class A power amps here but I choose to use one in favour over the others. So if class A does matter to the sound whatever it might be doing seems to be eclipsed by some other factor.
Also one of the amps (an XTZ) can be switched between class A and class AB and doesn't - at least to me - sound any different, although it does get quite a bit warmer.
The real dislike was with class B, and Xover distortion was very evident in their early days both by ear and measurement.
I think now that most A>AB, (and probably the Krell approach) have solved it all, and that even class D is extremely good.
Having looked into it a little more, it seems the efficiency of a Class A amplifier depends on the nature of the load, which under "usual configurations" (inductive or transformer coupling to the load) the efficiency can be as high as 50%. But with capacitative coupling the efficiency falls to 25%.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_amplifier_classes
https://www.electronics-notes.com/articles/analogue_circuits/amplifier-design/amplifier-class-a-b-ab-c-d-f-g-i-s-t.php
https://www.electronics-tutorials.ws/amplifier/amp_5.html
My speakers are Quad 57s, electrostatic speakers in which the nominally capacitive load is connected to the amplifier output via a transformer. The load in practice varies from being largely inductive (due to the transformer) at low frequencies, to being largely capacitative at higher frequencies. What this means to the overall efficiency of the amplifier I hesitate to say. But they do get hot - too hot to be used during the summer months!

Class D amplifiers are improving all the time, and will probably be the norm for audio amplifiers in the future.

I know, I would love a week's holiday down your way, but accommodation prices are taking the piss. Anita found somewhere in Wales where a caravan would cost us a grand for the week. In a bloody caravan! In Wales! God knows what it would cost to stay somewhere proper.
But I may still get to darken your door because:
I told her I'd empty the tools out of the van, and that could be our accommodation. Not so much a poor man's camper van, more a rich man's tent. I've not had the van long enough to make it into a shit pit, and I've seen somewhere tents/awnings that attach to side of van to give extra space, and which can be detached from the van when going out for the day.
There would even be room for the Fireblade to go in the back, so I can get out for the day ragging round the country lanes while Mrs. P stays behind to make me dinner. Starting to sound like the best holiday ever!
About that last paragraph: that's me dreaming, she'd never allow that :(

These are all go to test listening tracks for me which have a good mix of bass, drums, voice, and natural instruments, and are great recordings. Well worth a listen if you don’t know them.
So my initial thoughts are OMG, there is massive control on the bottom end, the separation and soundstage is improved, attack of drums, cymbals and percussion is crisp and clear. Overall quite stunning. I need to have a longer listen to form a final opinion but pretty good so far. I am quite impressed with the Audiolab as a pre-amp, the listening above was to vinyl and it seems to be very neutral in my opinion.
I think the key improvement is a much better match with my Wilson Benesch Vectors, more control, detail and punch.
So having listened to quite a variety of albums and tracks I thought I would try and follow up on the above as I now have formed a more cohesive opinion of the Krell.
So far the majority of my listening with the Krell has been with vinyl although I am also rather pleased how it sound with the FM tuner.
I think that describing how it performs/sounds is best done while I listen to Patrick Moraz - ‘The Story of i’, for those of you who do not know this album it is a stunningly complex recording, with layers of keyboards, synth, drums, bass and guitar, there are also huge transients and some very deep extended bass notes in places. It can be a difficult album to listen to in my experience because it can sound jumbled on a poor system, and also sometimes edgy, so it is a challenge.
What immediately hits me when listening to it with the Krell is the separation of the layers in the recording, to the extent now that I can appreciate different aspects of the mix, the soundstage is wide and detailed, to the extent that it has made me sit up in certain passages as the 3D out of the box experience surprised me and made everything feel totally real. There is absolutely no distortion that I can hear, and the depth and control of the low registers is quite astounding. I can literally close my eyes and pick out the layout of the drum set and where the other percussion is, amazing. There is a piano section on side two, and the depth, detail and tonal extension gives the impression of the piano being played in the room, wonderful. Nothing so far sounds harsh or tonally wrong, it’s just sounds like I am actually getting very close to hearing what has been recorded. I guess on a poor recording this level of detail and control is likely to make them sound even worse.
To sum up what I am trying to say is that I am now hearing things in the recording and music I was not before, and to use that old cliche, it is as if a veil has been lifted from in front of the speakers. So I am rather pleased that I moved to the Krell.
As an aside the Audiolab 8300CDQ as a pre-amplifier is rather impressive, I am sure there are better pre-amps out there, but it certainly is fine for me at present. I will report more on it from a digital perspective when I get round to listening more to CDs and HiRes streaming.
You hear what I hear then. You'll get the same from digital although I warn you now stuff with serious bass can be scary if you listen to it at 'proper' levels! The level of control and resolution is just stupid good.

The more I listen to the Krell the more I like it. I think it’s a combination of previously having an amp that was struggling to control my speakers when it was pushed harder and also that the Krell is a great amp, masses of punch, lots of detail and big soundstage.
