WTD Quad ESL 63 AC supply transformer X 1

Hi all, I've got a dead AC supply transformer in my Quad ESL 63.

If anyone has one or knows where to get hold of one I would be very grateful.

Also if anyone has any technical specs on the transformer, that would be very helpful too.

You could measure the working one, carefully!

Haven't got back to me yet as of 8:00am this morning so more hedging my bets to get a solution as soon as possible.

Although, to say I've had a chequered past with Quad service division, would be a gross understatement. All water under the bridge as far as I'm concerned now though so hopefully they can help me out this time.

I think they will.

Just looking at the circuit of the 63, there appears to be a resistor in series with the primary, might be worth checking that this is not open circuit. Will post a diagram.

I think myself and Alan Firebottle actually happened across the same diagram on Saturday (after Alan had diagnosed the issue to be the transformer itself). I will certainly check the possibility of this.

One Thing have come back to me first.

Details are:

Primary = 2 x 115v

Secondary = 1 x 14v

1 x 640v


Ideally I hope I can get a direct replacement but if not at least I now know the specs if I need to get one made. I'm hoping they may be able to source one for me.

One of my 63's is suffering from loose stator, not sure what I'll do.

Shell out for repair and wait a couple of months . . . . is there anything else for it . . . haha.

One of my stators 'rattles' but only at prolonged low frequencies (35-50Hz ish). If I'm listening for it I can hear it on certain material but I doubt anyone else could if they didn't know it was there. Really annoying but all part of the Quad membership costs!

Heard a pair of 57's at their best again recently and I need a fully working pair back in my life. It's not just a 'want' type of thing it's firmly in the 'need' category.

Annoyingly I have a pair but one has low output, I also have a fully refurbished one (long story) but it's output is just a little higher than the 'working' one of the non refurbished pair.

Once I've sorted these 63's I'll get on with sorting the 57's. If I have a pair of each working satisfactorily I can actually die a happy man.

Many years ago I worked on my 57's, some new treble units, a new HT transformer, some new capacitors and resistors, but I'm a bit hesitant to pull a 63 apart.

I only say that because I know it's never going to happen . . . .

A few years ago I had a fully rebuilt 'perfect' pair of 57's and a decent working pair of 63's. Unfortunately I needed some cash for house repairs and both pairs went. At the time it hadn't actually dawned on me what a nightmare it could (and would) be to get back there.

Oh well good things come to those who wait . . . .

Yes I wouldn't fancy my chances on anything more than doing this transformer 'swap' on the 63's . . . the delay lines and stator placement scares me . . . .

Next month I'm planning of winning the big one on the Premium Bonds, then I'll get my 63's serviced!

Hi there,

Unfortunately I didn't see your requirement sooner as I have most parts available ( have had several pairs and bought some for spares ) & certainly mains transformers.

If you need and help on changing it out please don't hesitate - quite unusual for these to go on a 63.
